A fantastic classic Rioja by a family that has been making the stuff for more than 80 years. It’ll go with all the usual Spanish dishes, including roast lamb, pork and chorizo.

About the producer
The fourth-generation Pérez Cuevas family farms high-altitude plots at up to 800 metres in the Rioja region, as well as further-afield plantings in Ribera del Duero and Rueda. They are working to make all their vineyards 100% organic and are continuously promoting biodiversity. Olive trees and other native flora are dotted among their vineyards.

About the region
The River Ebro and its various tributaries sew up the three sub-regions of Rioja – Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. It is in the latter where Bodegas Ontañón have their vines, high in the Sierra de Yerga mountains. The prestigious region surrounding Quel turns out Tempranillo of excellent quality, smashing tired clichés that this is the ‘lesser’ of the Rioja sub-regions.

Food and Wine Pairings
Pair this wine with Claire Thomson’s Lamb Scottadito. Lamb and Rioja are one the most classic food pairings. The intense fruit flavours in this Crianza chime perfectly with the juiciness of the meat and complement the rosemary.
