Catena Wines

Catena is amongst the most-famous names in Mendoza. Award-winning winemaker Nicolás Catena Zapata not only revolutionised his family’s winery in the Uco Valley, he’s also largely responsible for putting Argentina firmly on the world’s wine map. He pioneered high-altitude Malbec, planting vines in the foothills of the Andean Mountains. At 5,000ft, they are some of the highest vineyards in the world. The resulting wine succeeded in being branded No.1 Malbec in the World by Wall Street Journal. In the mid-nineties, Nicolás went on to identify the estate's very best vines, and the fine wine label Catena Alta was born – complex, ageworthy, premium single-variety wines made from Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Today, Bodegas Catena Zapata is in the expert hands of fourth-generation vintner, his daughter Laura, who continues to innovate and promote the unique Mendoza wine region and Argentinian Malbec.
