If you’ve drunk Rioja, you’re almost guaranteed to have come across Marqués de Cáceres. Since the 1970s they’ve been producing quality wines in the Spanish region. Their expertise certainly shows in this Crianza. The grapes, primarily Tempranillo, are grown on plots in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, then aged for 12 months in oak to lend aromas of toasted wood and spices. It’s full of candied red fruit flavours and very smooth to drink, thanks to elegant tannins. A wine for a gourmet burger, comforting stew or chorizo-based dishes.

Toasty oak, raisins, stewed plum and lashings of vanilla from one of my favourite traditional Rioja bodegas. Recommend at least a couple hour decant to open up the savoury flavours and tannins and paid £9.99 in a recent Rioja sale. Lovely jubbly!

A bit too much bite and tannin for my palate, settles after breathing for a while but I probably won’t get another one. (I bought a selection of rich reds to try some new ones, with my personal preference being for smooth rich eg Merlot, Shiraz)

Update. it definitely gets better when allowed to breathe for a while. Up to FOUR STARS for me now.

All rioja crianzas should be given at least couple hours to breathe - I would open a gran reserva in the morning and a reserva in the early afternoon if drinking in the evening. I also decant to aerate the wine.

Our favourite wine first tasted it in Tenerife after being recommended by the waiter.It was served chilled my wife and I looked at each other chilled red wine how odd .But after drinking it we only ever chill our red wine now .just ordering some more ++++

We ordered this wine some years ago during a family meal in a Glasgow restaurant and enjoyed it immensely. I tracked it down to Majestic at a very affordable price compared to the restaurant and a case of 12 bottles has become the cornerstone of my godson's birthday gift each year
