Rioja produces Spain's flagship red wines, mainly from Tempranillo and Garnacha. Soft fruit and smooth oak influence make Rioja very popular.
In 1973 a group of foodie friends decided to make a Rioja which was expressly designed to go with food. They succeeded. 50 years later, their wines are still renowned for being food-friendly.
