The Marquis de Riscal is the man who made Rioja what it is today. Up until the 1850s the locals had made only light, young wines. Then, in 1858, Riscal introduced the ‘Bordeaux method’ – barrel ageing. From that moment on, cask ageing – the use of oak – became absolutely integral to Rioja winemaking. Today, Riscal Reserva is one of the most famous wines in Spain, not least because it was a favourite of artists including Ernest Hemmingway and Salvador Dali. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s a reliably fantastic wine. They only use grapes from vines which are at least fifty years old which made the flavours incredibly rich and concentrated. It’s full of summer berry, red-fruity flavours and the liquorice, vanilla spice which is classic Rioja. Perfect with jamón, and pulse-based dishes.
