Here’s something a little different: a Chardonnay from Moldova. A rich and fruity bottling, it exemplifies why this eastern European country is winning serious acclaim for both the quality and value of its wine. It doesn’t hurt that this made by the same people who run Château Purcari, the world’s most award-winning winery in 2021.

About the producer
Founded in 2002 by Victor Bostan as a sister project to Château Purcari, Bostavan is a leading name in Moldovan wine. It has collected more than 70 awards at prestigious industry competitions. As well as international varieties such as Chardonnay, the Purcari group is at the forefront of reviving Moldova’s little-known indigenous grapes, including red Fetească Neagră.

About the region
Bostavan’s vines sprawl over 600 hectares of Moldovan farmland and across four different microclimates. The Dniester River, which forms the country’s border with Ukraine, influences many of their vineyards. Chardonnay is one of the country’s most planted grape varieties, after the likes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Food and Wine Pairings
Pair this wine with Claire Thomson’s Gourgères. This wine is unoaked, so its apple and stone fruit flavours are wonderfully zippy and fresh, whilst its classically rounded Chardonnay character matches the buttery pastry.
