About the producer
‘Rural’ really is the right name for this wine – the Masút Winery, where it’s made, is the only winery in the entire Eagle Peak region of Mendocino, and has no neighbours. But third-generation winemakers Ben and Jake Fetzer were drawn here for good reason. Their passion is hillside Pinot Noir and conditions for it hardly get better than on the mountainous frontier.

About the region
Not nearly as well-known as nearby Russian River Valley, Eagle Peak pairs elevation with shallow hillside soils. The result is red wine with fantastic freshness and well-integrated acidity. The 485-hectare Masút Winery ranch has vines planted on two diverse soil sites: a sedimentary rock and clay plot by the river, and a sandstone patch at the top of the mountain. The Fetzers also source some old-vine Pinot Noir from long-time family friends Pete and Steve Johnson.
