Majestic Guides: Explore South Africa through Wine Club by Majestic

Majestic Guides: explore South Africa through Wine Club by Majestic

In Short:
Few countries have a winemaking setting this spectacular: rows of vines are backed by jagged mountains and blue ocean surf. But South Africa’s landscape has more to offer than instagram-worthy views - our Wine Club insider, Ali Mountjoy, writes:

Majestic

In recent decades, South Africa’s wine production has ramped up, and it’s the diversity and quality of what’s on offer that has grabbed the spotlight. The wine industry considers South Africa to be part of the New World, but there’s serious history here. The first wine was produced in Cape Town in 1659, and by the early 1900s, millions of vines had been planted. A combination of geographical isolation and, later, the oppressive apartheid system, meant that for years the country’s winemaking potential was under-appreciated.

Today, new talent is constantly emerging, and thanks to less constrictive rules than many other regions and countries, winemakers have the freedom to experiment with new plantings. For perspective, Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s first grape variety – with more vine plantings than its native Loire Valley – but it now represents fewer than one vine in five around the Cape.

Beyond Chenin Blanc and fellow signature grape, Pinotage, you’ll now find an incredible variety of wine styles. There’s Bordeaux-inspired whites from Cape Town, Rhône-like reds from Swartland, elegant Pinot Noir from Elgin, and South Africa’s answer to Champagne – world-class sparkling wines that are made using the cap classique method – a similar process to the one used in Champagne. Even Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc gets a run for its money, with similar styles coming from South Africa’s cool-climate spots like Stellenbosch.

Interested in learning more? You’re in luck. Wine Club by Majestic have just released three cases of exclusive South African wine.

Here’s a taste of what’s included:

Four times a year, we release a themed selection of wine designed to take you on a journey of exploration, and this season, we’re heading to sunny South Africa. It's impossible to include everything this spectacular country has to offer in one case. But our expert wine buyers have carefully selected each bottle to give you a flavour of the highlights.

And the case goes beyond great wine. As with all of our themes, we’ve partnered with a chef to bring you easy to prepare recipes – all designed to elevate your tasting experience. To get you fully in the spirit of South African culture, we teamed up with Georgia East – a celebrated South African cook and food writer. We’ve perfectly paired our selection of wines with her South African-style dishes, from end-of-summer braai-style grills, to hearty, warming stews.

Georgia’s food stories and recipes are included in the case brochure – a bespoke catalogue which includes a wine tasting guide from our Master of Wine, Elizabeth Kelly, tasting notes and producer insights on each wine. And since you’re likely to get a taste for a new wine style, we recommend similar bottles from the wider Majestic range, so your journey of wine discovery never ends.

And the exploration doesn’t stop there. Wine Club has an online hub full of interesting content, including insightful videos direct from the winemakers themselves.

Elizabeth Kelly MW and Wine Club buyer, Christine, have also created a catalogue of individual tasting videos, so you can crack open any bottle in your case and instantly access snippets of expert knowledge. You’ll find the videos on our Youtube channel and members-only Facebook group.

If you love nothing more than discovering how the contents of your glass made it from grape to bottle, Wine Club by Majestic will quench your thirst for knowledge.
