White Cinsault isn’t the only lesser-known variety you’ll find being grown in South Africa. Producers have experimented with everything from Ruby Cabernet to indigenous Roobernet. They’re still establishing new regions, too; the country’s full winemaking potential has yet to be unleashed.

Even in a winemaking country that has everything, white Cinsault is an oddity. Yet the 50-year-old vineyard block that produces this bottling has been given a fresh lease of life in the new-wave Series Rare label from the Stellenrust winery. Think of it as the Rhône Valley come to sunny Stellenbosch.
Through one of the most successful Black empowerment projects in South Africa, Fairtrade producer Stellenrust have seen 70 of their employees take ownership of the land they farm. While Stellenrust focus primarily on Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage and Shiraz – for which they’ve gained several international trophies – this wine goes to show they have other talents. Their Series Rare label of wines are so limited that they’re mostly sold on allocation.
Stellenbosch is the big-hitter wine region of South Africa, world-famous for its range and quality. Within this, Stellenrust boasts an enviable position, rolling over bountiful hectares in the coveted ‘golden triangle’. Another set of their vineyards is in the cool Bottelary Hills, freshened by breezes blowing in from Cape Town. It is from there that the grapes for this wine are harvested.
