Primarily Merlot and Cabernet Franc – with well-measured dashes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot – it is elegant and polished. Like many South African estates Morgenster comes with history: its manor house was built in 1786. But when Italian Giulio Bertrand bought this Cape jewel in 1992, he saw something his predecessors hadn’t – the perfect terroir for red wine and olive production. He planted out the fields, and now Morgenster produces both fine wines and top-of-the-range extra-virgin olive oils – a little slice of Piedmont at the tip of Africa. Giulio passed away in 2018, but his two daughters are carrying on the dream.
