Lourens River Valley, Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch red used to be all about Pinotage, the local variety that’s a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. And while there are excellent contemporary versions of this signature grape still being grown here, many of the leading estates are now focusing their efforts on Cabernet Sauvignon.

When it comes to Bordeaux-style blends in South Africa, there’s just no beating Stellenbosch. And this is a real head-turner from Morgenster, where legendary winemaker Pierre Lurton acts as consultant. Primarily Merlot and Cabernet Franc – with well-measured dashes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot – it is elegant and polished. The 2013 vintage presented perfect ripening conditions so you're in for a real treat.

Like many South African estates Morgenster comes with history: its manor house was built in 1786. But when Italian Giulio Bertrand bought this Cape jewel in 1992, he saw something his predecessors hadn’t – the perfect terroir for red wine and olive production. He planted out the fields, and now Morgenster produces both fine wines and top-of-the-range extra-virgin olive oils – a little slice of Piedmont at the tip of Africa. Giulio passed away in 2018, but his two daughters are carrying on the dream.

These are the wines that the Stellenbosch terroir seems made for. The combination of soil, climate and slopes make South Africa’s most famous wine region the perfect place for ripening classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

This wine will go perfect with Lamb Shank Pie
