Tempranillo may now be king in Rioja, but it wasn’t always so. This stand-out bottling is made entirely from the region’s classic grape variety – Garnacha. And it’s utterly delicious: think fruity cassis aromas, with hints of toffee and vanilla. Savoury, fresh, and silky too. No surprise that respected critic Tim Atkin MW gave it a brilliant review.

About the producer
The 80-hectare Finca Valpiedra estate is tucked in a photogenic turn of the Ebro River. Grapes are grown using organic methods and hand-harvested before rigorous sorting ensures only the finest are used. Tempranillo is the most-planted variety, but the three hectares of Garnacha – rooted in alluvial soils – produce wines that are aromatic, complex and age-worthy.

About the region
Spain’s famous wine region is geographically dramatic: it’s home to seven valleys, the winding Ebro River and a number of tributaries. Finca Valpiedra is nestled into one of the river bends and has stony terraces that slope down to the waters. Proximity to the river helps to moderate vineyard temperatures, providing protection from frost.

Food and Wine Pairings
Pair this wine with Claire Thomson’s Pork roasted with Butter Beans & Migas. Rioja and pork are a longstanding favourite pairing. The wine’s juicy flavours tie in with the succulent texture of the pork, whilst its silky, toasty character is a great match for the beans.
