For many drinkers, Chardonnay is the ultimate classic white variety. But here’s a slightly unconventional iteration, made not in the grape’s home region of Burgundy but in southern Spanish DO Jumilla. Aged in French and American oak, the resulting wine is vibrant, with notes of lemon, quince and stone fruit. With good length and a strong finish, it’ll stand up to a range of dishes.

About the producer
Family-owned Bodega Bellavista is a new winery, built to continue the work of Bodegas Alceño, which has over 125 years of viticultural tradition. Winemaker Juan Miguel Benítez Garcia studied in Jumilla and has worked extensively elsewhere in Murcia, producing many award-winning wines.

About the region
In the southeast of Spain, between the coast and the La Mancha plateau, the Jumilla region is characterised by its extreme diversity of altitudes. Vineyards vary between 400 and 950 metres above sea level, ascending in parallel valleys from north to south. Not only does this provide excellent conditions for organic farming, it permits white grapes such as Chardonnay to retain their freshness.

Food Pairing
Enjoy this wine with Butternut Squash, Sage & Blue Cheese Pithivier. A full-flavoured dish needs a full-bodied wine. A rich, rounded and toasty Chardonnay is the perfect complement to the pie's buttery pastry.
