While McLaren Vale is known for red wines, you won’t often see this Spanish variety here: Tempranillo. Made organically by a star local producer, the wine’s grapes come from a single vineyard – resulting in a bold and spicy wine bottling with notes of black plum, cherry, liquorice and dried herbs. Proof that Australasia is never standing still when it comes to winemaking.


About the producer
One of the region’s heritage names, Wirra Wirra was first founded in 1894 by eccentric former cricketer Robert Strangways Wigley. He purchased vast swathes of land in the McLaren Vale, but it later fell into disrepair. In the 1960s winemaker Richard Trott acquired the vineyards and began restoring them to the thriving state they enjoy today.

About the region
Planted with just 7,500 hectares of vineyards, McLaren Vale isn’t a huge growing area, but what it may lack in size it makes up for in serious quality. With the cooling influence of the nearby ocean and its red-brown loamy sand soils, the region enables a range of red varieties to succeed. Shiraz and Grenache are local classics, but clearly quirky Tempranillo does well here too.
