Red berries, cherries, spice – this wine has all that we love about Pinot Noir, and with a distinctly Kiwi stamp too. It’s crafted by winemaker Stu Marfell, who hails from the Awatere Valley and picked his first vintage at Vavasour at the tender age of nine. Hand-harvested grapes have been fermented with wild yeast creating a luscious and alluring bottling that balances earthy, savoury elements with bright fruit and floral aromas. Elegant and poised.


About the producer
When Vavasour decided to set up shop in Marlborough’s cool Awatere Valley in 1986, people thought they were crazy. Dotted with sheep – and not much else – the small valley was believed to be too extreme for winemaking. Fast-forward nearly 40 years and Vavasour are considered pioneers. As they had first pick, they own the best vineyard sites in the valley and turn out intense, layered wines.

About the region
The Awatere is notably chilly, but Vavasour found the perfect site for ripening Pinot Noir – thanks to some local sheep. During particularly cold spells, the sheep would congregate on specific hillsides where it was naturally warmer. These would eventually become the estate’s Pinot Noir block, known as The Favourite.
