Te Kairanga is one of the oldest wineries in Martinborough, yet it keeps its vinous philosophy set firmly on the future. Winemaker John Kavanagh has completed over 30 vintages of Pinot Noir, the winery’s top-planted grape, but clearly is a deft hand at Chardonnay too.

Martinborough accounts for less than 2% of New Zealand’s total wine production – but what it lacks in volume it makes up for in quality. Vineyards are protected from harsh climes by mountains to both the west and south west. The Martinborough Terrace where Te Kairanga’s vineyards are located is arguably the most prized area: it’s a deep, free-draining river terrace on land once owned by Martinborough’s founding father, John Martin.

Try this with Five-Spice Roast Pork Bao Bun with Hoisin Sauce, Cucumber & Spring Onions. The wine’s exotic, fruity flavours and notes of toasted brioche are a perfect complement to the hoisin pork and doughy bread.
