Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz bring rich, savoury character and structure, while a touch of the rare Italian varietal Lagrein lends a kick of spice. About the producer
Rather than sticking to the tried-and-tested regions, winemaker Ben Glaetzer decided to strike out into some of South Australia’s lesser known corners when founding his winery in the 1990s. He ended up in Langhorne Creek, and has worked hard to build its profile. Together with some other industry veterans, he’s grown Heartland into an award-winning winery.

About the region
South Australia isn’t just about the Barossa. Set south east of the city of Adelaide, Langhorne Creek is heavily influenced by winds blowing in across coastal Lake Alexandrina directly from the Southern Ocean. Reducing daytime temperatures and sunshine hours, they create the conditions for optimal grape ripening. Heartland’s vineyards rest in deep alluvial sandy loam soils. They are a haven for native trees and fauna, while grazing goats that keep the weeds at bay.

Enjoy this wine with Braised Short-Rib Beef Cottage Pie. Big and bold works just as well, so long as the wine has structured tannins, like this one, to combat the richness of the dish.
