Robust and full-bodied – yet fresh and elegant – this Spanish Tempranillo is bursting with aromas of preserved red fruit, dried figs, sloe and cassis. Aged for ten months in American oak casks, it also has lovely hints of vanilla, toffee and white chocolate. Try it with lamb or beef (a stew would be delicious), or sheep- and goat-milk cheeses.

After generations of winemaking in Rioja, family Martínez Bujanda found this historic vineyard site – 900m high in central Castilla-La Mancha – and decided to revitalise it. Only 421 of the 1,000 hectares of land are planted with grapes; the rest is shrub land. As well as Tempranillo, their holdings include Viura, Garnacha and Moscatel, plus a number of international varieties.

Finca Antigua is set on calcareous soils in one of the coldest parts of La Mancha – Europe’s largest single demarcated DO wine region. Dry and with extremes in weather – blisteringly hot in summer, freezing in winter – it is a predominantly a red-wine region. International varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot can be found in relative abundance.
