When it comes to Riesling in the Mosel, rockstar winemaker Ernie Loosen is the name to know. His 200-year-old family estate produces some of the finest examples of the grape variety – not just in Germany, but in the entire world. The slate-soiled vineyards, set on extremely steep slopes, are lined in plantings that are up to 130 years of age. He’s an expert at producing expressive, concentrated wines.

Germany’s celebrated Mosel is one of the planet’s most beautiful winemaking regions – and also one of its most challenging to farm. Here dangerously steep slopes, up to 65 degrees in incline, plunge down to the snaking river. But with good drainage and heat-retaining slate soils, this is the perfect place to grow Riesling. The sensational results justify the many challenges.
