What to Drink on New Year’s Day

New Year’s Day is the perfect opportunity to relax, recharge and savour something special. Whether you're embracing a leisurely day or keeping up the pace from Christmas gatherings, this guide will help you choose the best wines and drinks for the 1st of January.

After the glamour and excitement of New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day calls for a change of pace. It's a time to reflect, recharge and ease into the year with good food and drink. The choices we make on the 1st of January can set the tone for a joyful and thoughtful year ahead - and that applies to what we put in our glass - whether we are exploring new trends, indulging in lighter options or perfectly pairing wines with our favourite meals.

From staple classic wines and beers, to low-alcohol options, this day can be as varied as you like. Whether you're hosting a brunch, gathering family for a traditional roast, or simply enjoying some quiet time, these drink choices will enhance your New Year’s Day.

Try January

Why not start the year with a sense of adventure? ‘Try January’ is all about exploring new flavours, regions and styles to expand your horizons. Dive into a crisp Godello from Spain, a grape known for its balance of fruit and minerality. Or venture into Languedoc, the heart of France’s innovative winemaking, with a bold red blend that pairs wonderfully with hearty winter dishes. A weissbier, with its smooth and fruity profile, also makes for a brilliant pairing with brunch. Discover more of our favourites below:

Paulaner Weissbier

Germany's favourite German wheat beer, made with a unique brewing process which ensures its cloudy flavourful character. The unfiltered brewing method allows it to retain its natural authenticity along with the many vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

Winemaker Series Godello, Monterrei

Swap your favourite Chardonnay or Albarino for this fantastic fresh and zesty alternative. Martín Códax is arguably the biggest name in Rías Baixas and winemaker Katia Álvarez was named one of Spain's top ten women winemakers by The Drinks Business.

Gérard Bertrand ‘Heritage’ Clairette du Languedoc

Gérard Bertrand was once a famous rugby player and he is now one of Southern France’s most acclaimed winemakers, with his wines regularly scooping top marks from critics. This delicious white featured in Saturday Kitchen and it’s easy to see why with its zesty citrus and white peach flavours.

Le Saint Martin Côtes du Roussillon Villages

Nicolas and Miren de Lorgeril, celebrated winegrowers from Languedoc, acquired vineyards in the prestigious terroir of Roussillon. This bold and spicy red is made from historic plots near Château de Cixous.

Cave de Ribeauvillé 'Les Comtes de Ribeauvillé' Crémant d'Alsace Brut

Cave de Ribeauvillé is the oldest wine cooperative in France. Although it’s not the region you may first associate with it, Alsace has been producing traditional method sparkling wine since the 19th century. If you've never tried it, this aromatic blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay is a great place to start.

Low & No Alcohol Drinks

As we enter a season of balance after festive celebrations, low and no-alcohol options are an increasingly popular choice for New Year’s Day and beyond.

The following classic drinks are perfect for pairing with a variety of dishes, offering sophistication without the buzz. Enjoy Lucky Saint’s Hazy IPA with spicy Asian food, Guinness Draught 0.0% with hearty stews, or perhaps a perfectly chilled rosé with seafood or light salads.

Lucky Saint Hazy IPA 0.5%

Traditional brewing meets new world hops. A great low alcohol option, this beer is juicy with tropical flavours and aromas of stone fruits, brewed with pale malts and new world hops to create the perfectly balanced IPA, with just 0.5% alcohol.

Guinness Draught 0.0%

Guinness have been brewing beer in Dublin since 1759 – and this alcohol-free take on their beloved stout draws on their long history of innovation. You’ll find it smooth and velvety with the ideal balance of bitterness and sweetness, plus notes of roasted coffee and chocolate.

Small Beer 'The Original' Lager

Small Beer is the classic Pilsner style – bright, crisp and fresh. By combining the traditional Czech Saaz hop with British Barley, it combines the refreshment of a pilsner, with malty British beer. It's at a low strength of 2.1%, so this is a great option if you're looking for maximum taste, without the alcohol.

Thomson & Scott 'Noughty' Sparkling Rosé 0%

Made with 100% Tempranillo, the base wine hails from La Mancha, south of Madrid. From there, it’s dealcoholized in specialist facilities in Germany to ensure all of the delicious flavour is retained. A great option for an alternative apéritif or fantastic with Asian-inspired dishes.

Origin Wine 'Stormhoek Pure' Rosé, Western Cape 0.5%

This rosé is made up of a delicious combination of 70% Chenin Blanc, 25% Cinsault and 5% Pinotage. These have been artfully combined to create a wine that is aromatic and vibrant, with aromas of strawberry and citrus fruits and a crisp refreshing finish.

Drinks Trends for 2025

What will be new, exciting or trending this year? Our top predictions include a continued interest in organic wines and English wines, plus the rise of orange wines and refreshing whites from Provence. Here are some favourites:

Gérard Bertrand 'Orange Gold' Orange Wine, France

This wine is produced using an ancestral winemaking method where the white grapes are vinified and fermented in whole clusters. This maceration with stalks and skins brings a remarkable orange colour with golden reflections and singular tannins.

Château Minuty 'M de Minuty' Blanc, Côtes de Provence

A crisp, luminescent white from the renowned Château Minuty, founded in 1936. Their stylish and fresh approach provides the gold standard of Provence and this wine is no different. Wonderfully versatile, it makes a great pairing for all kinds of aperitifs and fresh salads.

La Raia 'Il Borgo' Organic Gavi

This organic wine is grown in a rural Italian paradise. Vines grow between orchards, elderflower and acacia trees, all teeming with wildlife. This beautiful landscape sets the scene for the Rossi Cairo family’s biodynamic winemaking, which brings purity to all of their wines.

Balfour '1503' Brut, Kent

Balfour, one of England's top wine producers, was founded by Richard and Leslie in 2002.   This superb sparkling is made using the same traditional method as the finest French fizz. It's complex and toasty with crisp notes of apple, citrus, pepper and thyme.

Showstopping Champagne & Fantastic Fizz

When only a classic will do, these traditional bottlings are our top picks for celebrating fresh beginnings:

Chanoine Frères 'Réserve Privée' Brut Champagne

Chanoine Frères is the second-oldest Champagne house. For the last two decades it has championed diversity in this traditional region, putting winemaker Isabelle Tellier at the helm – one of the first female Chefs de Caves in Champagne. Her 20 years of experience shows in this delicious brut. Made primarily from Pinot Noir grapes, it's well-structured and beautifully aromatic.

Cantine Maschio Extra Dry Prosecco DOC

Maschio has been making internationally celebrated Prosecco since the 1970s. Winemaker Gabriele Cescon uses ‘free-run juice’ – the high-quality liquid from grapes that are naturally crushed under their own weight. It means minimal contact with bitter compounds, resulting in elegant, fruity fizz with pure, fresh flavours.

Codorníu 'Cuvée Original' Organic Brut Cava

Codorníu is Spain's longest-standing producer of wine and Cava. In 1872, Josep Raventós made the first bottle of Cava here, applying the traditional method to a blend of local Penedès grape varieties: Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada. Rich and toasty, this is delicious with creamy chicken and rice dishes.

Krone ‘Borealis’ Cuvée Brut, South Africa

Part of a collection of vintage-only sparkling wines made using the complex traditional method. These wines capture the unique qualities of each year in the vineyards, preserving the specific moment of each harvest within the bottles. This is the collection's flagship cuvée. Cooler-than-average temperatures around harvest time have made the 2021 vintage particularly fresh and bright.
