What is Definition by Majestic?

In Short:
The Definition by Majestic range brings the world's greatest wine styles to Majestic customers. Our award-winning buyers know all the classic regions and their grapes inside out, and have tasted hundreds of expressions. So if you're looking to discover a style for the first time, our Definition by Majestic range is the perfect place to start.

First launched in 2015, Majestic’s own-label Definition by Majestic collection was created to be enjoyed by seasoned sippers, as well as to intrigue new wine lovers. Nine years on and our expert Buying team re-tasted every wine compared to other leading examples on the market. Any wine they felt wasn’t ‘best in show’ has had an upgrade – and we can’t wait to share these incredible new wines with you.

What is the Definition by Majestic collection?

The range showcases what we consider to be the most important wine styles in the world. We partner with some of the best producers to represent what an iconic wine from each respective region or grape should taste like, helping make wine exploration all the more easy and enjoyable.

What is the purpose of the Definition by Majestic range?

The world of wine can be confusing. Beyond the abundance of regions and grape varieties, understanding wine labels and trying to decide on a price point can add to the puzzlement. The Definition by Majestic range is a fantastic way to try new grape varieties and styles while knowing you're in for something great.

The Definition by Majestic range features some of the world's greatest producers

With our Definition by Majestic wines, you’ll discover something exciting and new through tried and trusted producers. We're thrilled to work with some of the most prestigious wineries and winemakers in the world. And because their incredible wines feature under our own label, Definition by Majestic also offers excellent value for money.

When it comes to Spain’s most recognised reds, Rioja has to be top of the list. The La Rioja Alta winery is the epitome of traditional Rioja producers. It’s still run by descendants of the five founders and prides itself on its classic styles of the region’s wine. So when our buyers were looking to commission a Definition by Majestic Rioja, this iconic estate stood out.

The team picks every single grape by hand and wines are hand-racked by candlelight in the cathedral-like cellars beneath Haro’s Old Town cobbled streets. They even employ their own cooper to ensure barrels are made to their exacting standards.

Given such practices, it’s no surprise that our Definition by Majestic Rioja is a sophisticated wine, with notes of red fruit, coconut and vanilla spice, and a fine, silky texture. As all Riojans know, its inviting aromatics make it a fantastic complement for slow-roasted lamb shoulder.

Behind the Definition range is some of the wine world's most exciting figures

When we wanted a Côtes de Provence Rosé, naturally we turned to Château Peyrassol – a producer we’ve been working with for years, and a firm customer favourite at Majestic.

La Commanderie de Peyrassol was established in the 13th century by the Knights Templar and today, it’s one of the most renowned estates in Provence. The team there are committed to quality – they manage each of their vineyards like a grand cru, and their grapes are grown organically. Their sustainably driven estate is led by Winemaker Fabien Burani, who has spent his career in the region and produces an open, pale pink wine that marries freshness and roundness.

The Definition range certainly isn't afraid of the unconventional

Alongside the well-known classic bottles, our Definition by Majestic collection showcases innovative wines that look beyond traditional winemaking methods.

Our Definition by Majestic Barrel Fermented Old Vine Chenin Blanc is a collaboration with Villiera winery and Winemaker, Nathan Valentine. Using fruit from certified heritage 35 year old, low yielding vines, Villiera is a specialist in Chenin with a strong ethical and sustainable reputation. The entire winery and vineyard are solar powered and use rainwater harvesting – as well as creating a unique on-site wildlife sanctuary, the Pebbles Project and the Owethu Clinic.

The range also highlights new classics such as the English Bacchus. An ongoing project with the boutique vineyard and winery, Henners in East Sussex. This English Bacchus is a prime example of the lemony, tropical flavour profile we’ve grown to love. Henners vineyard benefits from a strong coastal influence. Low elevation and rich, free-draining clay soils make the site ideal for the production of quality still wines, whilst sea breezes are key to their success, minimising frost risk, reducing disease pressure and bringing a crisp salinity to the wines. Winemaker Collette O'Learly trained locally at Plumpton College and even did her research paper on Bacchus, making her an expert on the grape.
