Inside Knowledge: Women in Wine

In Short:

In celebration of International Women’s Day on Friday 8th March, we’re championing innovative, inspirational women in the wine industry.

With achievements including notable firsts in wine, esteemed awards, and the introduction of game changing winemaking processes, it’s remarkable how much these women have reshaped the world of wine – crafting some outstanding bottles as a result. Read on to discover their stories.

Nyetimber’s Head Winemaker, Cherie Spriggs, was the first person outside Champagne to be awarded Sparkling Winemaker of the Year in 2018. She was also the first woman to win the accolade – and the quality of her English sparkling wines that would rival the top French fizz are evidence of her skill.

Virginia Willcock’s interest in winemaking began in Perth, where as a teenager she assisted her father on a small vineyard. Her experience led her to the Margaret River, and today she is one of Australia’s most-awarded winemakers at Vasse Felix.

A second generation Italian-American with a career spanning more than three decades across four continents, Linda Trotta is the Winemaker of Bread & Butter Wines. She was named the North Bay Business Journals’ Napa Valley Winemaker of the year in 2018, and her best-loved, full-flavoured wines are testament to this.

Caroline Frey earned her stripes in the cellars of top Champagne crus and Bordeaux châteaux, but taking over such an established label as Jaboulet was still no mean feat - Jaboulet is nothing less than a cult Rhône wine label. Under her leadership, the estate has gained organic accreditation, harnessing minimal-intervention winemaking techniques to produce some truly excellent wines.
