Since 2005 Weingut Friedrich Becker have bagged Gault & Milau’s annual ‘Best German Pinot Noir’ gong time and again. Ruby red with aromas of wild berries, tobacco and spices, this wine is at once juicy, structured and elegant. Watch out Burgundy.

About the producer
Picking by hand, pressing softly and letting wines take their own time fermenting – by working in this way, winemaker Fritz Becker makes bottlings that shine. After training in New Zealand, California, Austria and Burgundy, he returned home to take his family’s wines to the next level. He’s not the only one to innovate – his father Friedrich planted the family’s first Pinot Noir back in the 1970s.

About the region
Set on the slopes of the Palatinate Forest in Pfalz, the Becker family vineyards have layers of shell limestone, plus a mountainous backdrop which protects the area from wind and inclement weather. This keeps the plots mild and balanced climatically. There is also the moderating influence of the Rhine – skirting past the region from France’s Alsace.

Food and Wine Pairings
Pair this wine with Claire Thomson’s Sausages with Aligot. Juicy and fresh Pinot Noir is an excellent match for dishes laden with rich cheese. Notes of spice complement the sausages beautifully.
