Fetească Neagră de Purcari

Native to Moldova, Fetească Neagră isn’t yet a well-known grape variety. But in the hands of celebrated local producer Purcari you can taste just what it’s capable of. Deep ruby hues and aromas of red berries give way to juicy flavours of plums and blackberries.

About the producer
Founded in 1827, Purcari is proof that Moldovan wines have real history. And quality too: the brand won its first gold medal in 1878 at the Paris World’s Fair. More recently, they’ve snagged hundreds of accolades at internationally respected competitions like the Decanter World Wine Awards. Although they grow some international varieties too, Purcari work to raise awareness of indigenous grapes such as Fetească Neagră and plummy Rară Neagră.

About the region
Set on the Dniester River by the border of Ukraine and the Black Sea, the Purcari region has sometimes been likened to Bordeaux, which shares a similar latitude, soil composition and climate. In fact, in the 18th century many French settlers moved here to plant wine grapes.

Food and Wine Pairings
Pair this wine with Claire Thomson’s Pork roasted with Butter Beans & Migas. Velvety textures in both wine and dish make a winning combination. The wine’s bold cherry flavours are a delicious contrast to the succulent texture of the pork.
