'Venture Cove' Zweigelt | Wine Club by Majestic

The unusual Zweigelt grape is widespread in just one place: Austria. But here on New Zealand’s South Island it clearly thrives in the hands of Austrian-born winemaker Hermann Seifried. And how enticing it is: dense dark fruit aromas lead into flavours of plum, Christmas cake and mocha. Generous tannins balance the succulent fruit. No wonder it’s a Seifried family favourite


About the producer
Born near Graz to fruit farmers, Herman Seifried studied winemaking in Germany before eventually relocating to New Zealand. Along with his Kiwi wife Agnes, he planted his first vines in 1973 in the then-unknown Nelson region, and now he boasts 350 hectares across the area. Seifried are sustainability accredited and bottle all their wines right where they are grown.

About the region
Set between mountains and the Tasman Sea, Nelson has a great climate for grape ripening. Seifried’s Brightwater vineyard, where the soil ranges from gravel to sandy loam, grows less than a single precious hectare of Zweigelt. That’s very different to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, some of the region’s most-planted grapes.
