I am writing to complain about your misleading pricing labels.   Your offer price is the most dominant price on the label.  As you know to obtain this price a total 6 bottle purchase must be made.  However the single bottle price is in a far smaller type point and also not in bold.  This is totally the wrong way around and at the very least the two prices should be in the same type point and both in bold.  From a normal shopping distance only one price is clearly visible.
I am writing to ask you to change this deliberately misleading pricing. I can not believe that this kind of price labelling is within the spirit and letter of the trading standards regulations.

Thank you for your feedback. The tickets we have on display are regulated by TSL as this is something they inspected when they come into our stores and even though the mix six prices is in bold on our tickets, it also explains on the ticket the mix 6.

Try your first English Pinot Noir..

The Bolney Estate in West Sussex is an 18 acre vineyard presently focussing on 6 premium varietals;  Pinot Noir, Rondo, Dornfelder, Chardonnay, Bacchus and Pinot Gris. The first vine was planted in 1972 and the estate has become a real success over the years, winning numerous awards and improving on their technique year - on -year.

This Pinot Noir balances attractive aromatics, sweet fruit and fine tannins. Just a portion has visited barrels, which adds a hint of aromatic toast and palate piquancy. Otherwise, the focus is the ripe fruit, introduced by a translucent ruby colour. Juicy red cherry fruits on the palate have ripeness and density about them, laced with finely perceptible tannins, all in a modest body that’s freshly balanced. It’s vibrant and bright with flavours of ripe strawberries and plums, red cherry and toasted almonds. Pairing perfectly with asparagus, pork and game birds.

Here is everything you need to know about Riesling…

Riesling is one of the most versatile grapes, with something for everyone! On the vine, the grape is deep golden yellow and the resulting wine can range from pale to richly golden in the glass. Riesling is predominately grown in a cool climate for example on the banks of the Mosel River in Germany or in Victoria, South Australia.

It is a floral, aromatic grape with concentrated fruit characters which enables it to age well in its bottle. Riesling produces wines from sweet to dry, the drier it is generally the more alcohol it has.
The main producers of Riesling are Germany, with Alsace, New Zealand and Australia also being large producers.

Here’s some from our store that we recommend you try.

The Lodge Hill, Jim Barry 2020. Clare Valley, Australia.
This Riesling is a classic Australian refreshing Riesling. It’s dry with gentle notes of lime and stone fruits with a subtle toast flavouring. Best to be enjoyed in its youth!

Dr Loosen Slate Hill, Germany 2020
Dr Loosen has vines in some of Germany’s best rated vineyards. Mosel valley’s steep slopes create the ideal climate for the Riesling, the altitude mixed with the sun creates the perfect environment for the grapes to grow. The sweetness in this wine is lifted by the fresh crispiness. Try this with a rich, fragrant curry or some battered calamari.

Weingut’s Schloss Vollrads, 2018
This is a Kabinett which is the driest category of Riesling. It is fresh and fruity, and excellent for many occasions. It has a great balance of crisp green apple and honey and goes brilliantly with sushi or scallops.

Week 2: An Introduction to Oliver Leflaive’s Puligny Montrachet 2018.

Just after the first world war, Oliver’s grandfather was faced with failure of his steel factory just south of Dijon. After this, he was left with only their investments in Burgundy, which was when he decided to enlarge his wine estate. It soon became a family run operating over 35 hectares! After moving away to Paris, in 1981 Oliver returned to Burgundy to co-manage the winery.

Puligny Montrachet appellation is a commune in Côte de Beaune, south Côte d’Or. Puligny Montrachet earns its fame by the almost unbelievable concentration of the qualities of white Burgundy that it produces.

Oliver Lefaive’s Puligny Montrachet is a vibrant and precise Burgundy, it is bright and shining with aromas of lemon and floral notes of elderflower, coated in sourdough brioche and delicate sweet spices, a touch of toasted hazelnut too. Pleasing and tempting to smell at, delivering a clear aromatic profile with finesse.

Definitely one for you to try this winter, pairing well with a buttery fish or chicken dish.

A brief introduction to Bordeaux…

In simple terms, Bordeaux is split into two parts; the left and the right bank, these are divided up by the Gironde, which then splits into the Dordogne and Garonne rivers.

The left bank is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon generally creating medium to full-bodied wines encompassing black fruit and herbaceous flavours. Cabernet Sauvignon has brilliant aging potential in the bottle, the aging of the wine softens the tannins producing red brick colours and dried fruit with forest floor flavours.

The main appellations on the left bank are Medoc, Paullac, Haut- Medoc and Margaux. These produce some of the finest wines in the world.

In the right bank the wines are generally smoother, with softer fruitier flavours. Merlot is the most extensively planted grape variety. It is a lighter wine than Cabernet Sauvignon but when aged in the bottle it can produce some intense dried fruit and tobacco flavours.
The main appellations of the right bank are Saint Emilion and Pomerol.

These two grape varieties also taste great when they are together! They grow in similar geographical locations all over the world and they complement each other fantastically. Both of these grapes age well in oak barrels. Merlot mellows the tannins and acidity within the Cabernet Sauvignon, creating a smooth, complex wine enabling it to be ready to drink at an earlier age than a single varietal. Many of the great wines of Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Hawkes Bay, Yarra Valley and many more are Cabernet Sauvignon- Merlot blends.

Introducing our fine wines….

This week: Edouard Delaunay’s Gevrey-Chambertin

The great northern Côte de Nuits village appellation, renowned the world over. Originally from Dijon and then having settled in the Côte de Nuits, the Delaunay family has always had a fondness for this village and their wines from this appellation have always stood out for their quality. The Delaunay family have created some of the finest wines in Burgundy over five generations.

The vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin are some of the oldest in Burgundy with its viticulture tracing back to the 1st century AD. The Edouard Delaunay estate has been brought back into its family’s hands in the last 3 years after decades apart. In the past few years the family have won 39 medals and been labelled ‘Burgundy’s new face’.

The mixture of altitude and south- east facing vineyards has created a superb bodied, flavoursome Pinot Noir. It has oak barrel ageing lasting 15 months with 35% new oak.

In appearance it is dark violet in colour. A very powerful aroma with notes of cherry, liquorice and coffee. Silky on the finish, this is the perfect wine for your Christmas dinner table, pairing with your turkey.

This month there are some fantastic offers on Cabernet Sauvignons.

3 that have caught my eye, and will definitely be on my shopping list are:

Jim Barry "Cover Drive" Coonawarra
Fancy yourself as a bit of a Bradman or Botham? This will be up your street.
Situated on the southern boundary of Coonawarra (Aboriginal for Honeysuckle), the old Penola Cricket Ground first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of local champions in 1950, but was retired in 1996. The Barry family purchased the 30 acres of vacant land in 1997. To preserve the a little piece of the of Coonawarra cricketing history, the original pavilion was retained, and the vines, first planted in 1999, were positioned around the cricket pitch.

Louis M. Martini, Sonoma County
James Suckling awarded this wine 92 points, and I can see why. Decant or let it rest and it will reward you. It is an approachable, fruit-driven wine. It offers a welcomingly round mouthfeel with ripe notes of red fruit and cherry. Delicate hints of dark chocolate and oak spice on the finish add layers of elegance and freshness, offering a rich yet balanced expression of the varietal.

David Finlayson, Stellenbosch
90%Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot ,and 4% Cabernet France, this is a nod to the Bordeaux Blend, as the namesake worked at the Chateau Margaux vineyard. Produced from four outstanding clones of Cabernet Sauvignon planted on different sites in the Stellenbosch area.  Made to exude absolute purity of varietal character and as such display true Cabernet Sauvignon cassis and blackcurrent flavours. The wine has a fresh, minty herbaceousness backed by mocca vanilla oak. Firm structured tannins and a long finish on the palate show good ageing potential.
