Mix It Up! Cocktails for St Patrick’s Day

Every 17th of March, people across the world don their best green outfits, raise a glass and toast to Irish heritage. But while ‘splitting the G’ on a pint of Guinness is the classic choice, why not mix it up this year with some delicious Irish-inspired cocktails?

Saint Patrick’s Day celebrates the patron saint of Ireland, who is credited with bringing Christianity to the country in the 5th century. What started as a religious feast day has now evolved into a global celebration of all things Irish. From lively parades to traditional music and plenty of Guinness, the day is an opportunity to embrace the spirit of Ireland. And what better way to do that than with a few expertly crafted Irish cocktails? Whatever your St Paddy’s staple, we’ve got the perfect serves for every party.

Classic Irish Coffee

Nothing warms you up quite like an Irish Coffee. A recipe that’s simple when you know how, and guarantees wow factor when served with desserts.

You’ll need:

Method:
  1. Add the brown sugar to a heatproof glass and pour in the Jameson Irish Whiskey.
  2. Top up with freshly brewed coffee, leaving space for the cream.
  3. Lightly whip the double cream and gently float it on top by pouring over the back of a spoon. This bit can take practice, but it’s like riding a bike – once you’ve got it, you’ll never forget.
  4. Enjoy without stirring – sip through the cream for the perfect balance of flavours.

Baileys Espresso Martini

For an indulgent twist on a classic, try an Espresso Martini with a creamy Baileys upgrade.

You’ll need:

  1. 50ml Baileys Irish Cream
  2. 25ml vodka
  3. 25ml fresh espresso (or freshly made coffee works well too)
  4. Ice

Method:

    1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
    2. Shake vigorously for around 15 seconds.
    3. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with coffee beans.

The Dublin Mule

A refreshing take on the classic Moscow Mule, the smooth spice of Teeling is complimented by a zingy ginger kick!

You’ll need:

  1. 50ml Teeling Small Batch Whiskey
  2. 20ml fresh lime juice
  3. Ginger beer
  4. Ice
  5. Lime wedge to garnish

Method:

  1. Fill a glass with ice and pour in the whiskey and lime juice.
  2. Top up with ginger beer and give it a quick stir.
  3. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Black Velvet

For those who still want to include the classic taste of Guinness in their celebrations but with a little added sophistication. Traditionally made with Champagne, it’s a fantastic way to elevate your St Patrick’s Day toast.

You’ll need:

  1. Half a glass of Guinness
  2. Half a glass of sparkling wine
  3. Swap for Guinness 0.0% and 0% Sparkling wine for a non-alcoholic version.

Method:

  1. Pour the Guinness into a glass, filling it halfway.
  2. Slowly top up with sparkling wine, pouring gently over a spoon to create a layered effect.
No celebration is complete without some traditional Irish snacks to complement your drinks, and this dip will have everyone coming back for seconds:

Cheese and Guinness Dip

You’ll need:

  1. 250g mature cheddar cheese, grated
  2. 125g cream cheese
  3. 50g butter
  4. 150ml Guinness (or Guinness 0.0% for a non-alcoholic version)
  5. 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  6. 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  7. 1 tsp garlic powder
  8. ½ tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  9. Salt and pepper to taste
  10. Spring onions or chives (to garnish)
  11. Crusty bread or pretzels (for dipping)

Method:

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and cream cheese together, stirring until smooth.
  2. Slowly pour in the Guinness, stirring continuously, and let it simmer for a couple of minutes to cook off some of the alcohol.
  3. Add the Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and smoked paprika (if using). Stir well to combine.
  4. Gradually add the grated cheddar cheese, stirring until melted and smooth.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then remove from heat.
  6. Transfer to a serving bowl, garnish with chopped spring onions or chives, and serve warm with crusty soda bread or pretzels.

Whether you’re hosting a party or enjoying a quiet night in, mix it up with these Irish-inspired favourites and don’t forget to raise a toast to St Patrick himself.
