Discover Something Different: Unique Wine Regions

Winemaking practices around the world have significantly improved in recent years, and as such, there's some exceptional wine coming out of unique and wonderful places you don't usually associate with wine production. We’re taking a tour through unique or up-and-coming regions such as Brda, the Tuscany of Slovenia, or Kakheti, Georgia’s most celebrated wine region.

Romania

Have you tried Romanian wine yet? If the answer's no, make sure to add the Incanta Feteasca Regala to your wishlist. Founded in 1998 by Bristol-born Philip Cox & his wife Elvira, Cramele Recas is currently Romania’s biggest seller of premium wine. Utilising the prowess of ancient vineyards dating back to 1447, the winery is renowned for producing modern, fruit-forward wines which over-deliver on quality.

All of Cramele Recas’s wines have been certified 100% vegan, and the natural wines have been certified organic since the 2020 harvest. Exotic and complex, discover notes of white pepper, cinnamon, fresh quince and floral aromas. Stays focused and balanced from start to finish. Enjoy Feteasca Regala with cajun blackened fish.

Brda, Slovenia

Brda is known as 'the Tuscany of Slovenia'. It sits between the Alps and the Adriatic, just over the border from Friuli, Italy, where similar white wines demand much higher prices. But because Slovenian Sauvignon is still relatively under the radar, you can pick it up for a bargain.

A great place to start is with the Krasno Sauvignon Blanc-Ribolla Gialla. It’s fresh and fruity, with aromas of green apple, pear, lemon and freshly cut grass. Try its refreshing acidity with oysters.

Lezignan-Corbieres, France

Corbières region is the largest Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in the Languedoc-Roussillon region but still fairly under the radar for French wine. Located in the Occitane town of Lezignan-Corbieres, the Château Grand Moulin was founded in 1988 by Noël Bousquet on the site of an old mill. This is the home of the Château Grand Moulin Grandes Vignes Blanc.

Grapes for this wine are sorted upon arrival to the cellar, followed by skin maceration and cold settling. The wine is aged in stainless steel vats to preserve its fruity character, undergoing three rackings with aeration for filtration. It’s aromatic with aromas of white peach, apricot, and citrus, as well as hints of white flowers. Try it with herby-grilled seafood, roast chicken or a creamy cheese platter.

Georgia

TBILVINO aims to become Georgia's premier winery, crafting exquisite wines from ancient indigenous grapes while honouring the timeless Qvevri winemaking method, rooted in an 8,000-year-old tradition. The Tbilvino Saperavi is fruit-forward, with floral aromas and bold flavours of forest fruits. TBILVINO’s wines draw their essence from the vineyards situated in Kakheti, Georgia’s most celebrated winemaking region, renowned for its lavish terroirs.

It is in these precious, fertile lands that the legendary grape, Saperavi, finds its origins and thrives. Nurtured in a stony area where grapes accumulate a high amount of sugar, these grapes are then hand-harvested for delicious results. Made in a fruit-forward style, expect floral aromas alongside bold flavours of forest fruits followed by an elegant, fresh finish. Enjoy now with barbecued pork, veal, or fried vegetables, or age for 10 years.

Elqui Valley, Chile

Elqui Valley is a wine region in Chile known for its Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and Carmenere wines but Mayu is challenging this notion with this silky Pinot Noir. Mayu was established in 2005 and named after the ancient Inca word for the Milky Way. For their Mayu Gran Reserva Pinot Noir, grapes are hand-harvested from the Quebrada de Talca and Titon vineyards, 18 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean.

After careful selection and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks before being aged for 10 months in French oak barrels to add structure. A silky, medium-bodied wine with soft tannins. Expect intense flavours of red fruit, sweet flowers and spicy notes. We recommend pairing this with roast duck or mushroom-based dishes.

Austria

If you like crisp, mineral wines why not try the Domäne Wachau 'Weingärten Weissenkirchen' Grüner Veltliner from the Wachau region of Austria? The area comprises a 33-kilometer-long gorge overlooking the Danube River. Produced from vines grown around the Weissenkirchen parish including the hamlets of Joching and Wösendorf. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's signature white grape.

This is made on the steep slopes in the Wachau region, and you can really taste the cooling influence of the Danube. It has delicious flavours of green apple and stone fruits that beautifully complement seared scallops or lobster bisque.

Spring is an especially perfect time to discover something different and hopefully, this list of innovative and trend-setting wines from off the beaten track will have you well on your way to picking up a brand new favourite.
