The Rustenberg winery dates back to 1682, when German Roelof Pasman recognised the farm’s grape-growing potential. It’s been operated by the Barlow family for the past 80 years, and they’ve created some exceptional bottles. Today, head winemaker is Murray Barlow, the only person to win Diners Club's Young Winemaker of the Year award twice. This is his finest Chardonnay, and it comes highly sought after. The grapes behind it are hand-harvested, and the wine aged for 16 months in oak to give a creamy finish. It’s complex and full-bodied, with plenty of ripe citrus, melon and peach flavours. Try it with rich chicken or pork dishes or age it for a decade. In 2022, this wine won an IWC award for the 2020 vintage.

Exceptional Chardonnay that has the depth of flavor that I love in South African wines, but is also very reminiscent of Bordeaux. The days of finding this under £20 are sadly gone, making it too expensive for a daily half bottle, but is still astonishing value compared to French. Putting this on the table with chicken would hoist you up in level of respect with your guests, but I it’s great on its own and enjoy it with a rare steak! Don’t hesitate on this one if you can find it at all

Truly superb, Burgundian in style, creamy and fabulous, perhaps loses just a hair to a Chassagne Montrachet Premiere Cru on the subtle minerality but it's close call. This is a wonderful wine and a fair price for what it is, but sadly still at £30, not a daily drinker. Truly rubs shoulders with giants.

This is a great white wine of Bordeaux quality, which is surprising in a new world wine. It's too dear for our regular drinking but a great crowd pleaser on special occasions.
