Elqui Valley

The Elqui Valley, one of Chile’s newest wine regions, has gained recognition for its innovative approach to winemaking. Historically known for its agricultural produce, it began focusing on viticulture in the late 20th century. The region benefits from an extreme diurnal temperature range due to its altitude, which helps in developing rich flavours and maintaining fresh acidity. Elqui’s winemakers are known for embracing modern techniques while respecting the region’s unique climatic conditions.

Our wine pick is the Mayu Carménère Appassimento 2019/20 

Located in Chile’s northernmost region, the Elqui Valley is famed for its distinctive wines, thanks to the intense sunlight and cooling Pacific breezes that define its climate. The Mayu Carménère Appassimento is a prime example of this unique style; characterised by ripe blackberry flavours, earthy spices, and smooth tannins. The high-altitude vineyards of Elqui Valley provide the perfect environment for this expressive Carménère, as the ripening period creates deep, expressive flavours

Aconcagua Costa emerged as a distinct sub-region in the 1990s. The area’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean gives a unique coastal influence to its wines, characterised by freshness and minerality. Maule Valley is known for its ancient bush vines and incredible history. The Morandé Reserva 1+1 País is a wonderful representation of the region, with bright strawberry and raspberry flavours and a refreshing acidity. The cooler climate and dry-farmed vineyards of Maule Valley contribute to light, fruit-forward wines that are truly expressive of the region’s terroir and centuries old winemaking techniques

Leyda Valley, a relatively recent addition to Chile’s wine landscape, has rapidly established a reputation for its cool-climate Syrah.
