Top Christmas Picks from our Master of Wine

Our Master of Wine, Jane Masters MW, shares her top Christmas picks – a selection of bottles to carry you effortlessly through the day, from the first festive nibbles to the very last mouthful.

Christmas is all about coming together and sharing good food, great wine, and even better company. And this year at Majestic, we’re truly spoiled for choice, with exceptional bottles and brilliant offers across our wine range.

Here’s a little preview of my own festive shopping list – the wines I’ll be uncorking and enjoying throughout the season. From crowd-pleasing favourites to indulgent treats, each one has earned its place at my Christmas table.

Domaine de Saint Ferréol Viognier, Languedoc

Viognier is my husband’s favourite grape, and it’s one I love too. Domaine de Saint Ferréol makes this wonderfully aromatic wine with peach and apricot fruit, yet balanced with freshness. It’s indulgent, with a broad structure that pairs well with creamy sauces and honey-glazed ham on Boxing Day.

Henriques & Henriques 10 Year Old Malmsey Madeira

A glass of Madeira with Stilton is one of my Christmas treats. This 10 Year Old Malmsey shows intense flavours of coffee, raisin, caramel and spice. Luxuriously sweet yet fresh, it lingers beautifully on the palate. And once opened, Madeira keeps for months, so you can enjoy it well into the new year.

Château Plince Pomerol, Bordeaux

Though I often prefer left bank Bordeaux wines, Château Plince in Pomerol has recently become a favourite of mine – last year the 2016 went down a treat. And the 2018 is a classic, savoury style with ripe dark fruits, depth, and a long, elegant finish. Its sumptuous style goes well with red meats, spicy dishes, or cheese. The Moreau family have tended this single vineyard for four generations, with neighbours like Château Nenin close by.

Château Cantenac Brown Margaux

With over a decade in bottle, the 2012 Cantenac Brown is drinking beautifully now. It has mellow dark fruit, nutmeg and vanilla spices, cedar, and forest floor aromas. On the palate, there’s supple savoury tannins making it a fine partner for beef wellington or other rich dishes. A Third Growth in Margaux, Cantenac Brown produces wines with refined aromatics and superb ageing potential.
