Montagny is an appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise. It’s a real enclave of quality, specialising in Chardonnay. In fact, it’s the only grape that’s grown in the whole region – so Montagny-based Cave de Buxy really know their Chardonnay inside-out. Montagny’s limestone soils mean the wines are fresh, with a fuller body than other Chalonnaise wines. The fruit flavours are really pronounced – a factor amped up by the fact that it’s ‘Vielles Vignes’. It’s made using grapes from thirty-year-old vines. Because they’re old, they only yield small amounts of grapes – so all the flavour is exceptionally concentrated. Think ripe apple, citrus and white blossom. The ripeness is balanced by serious crispness, and it’s left unoaked so the fruit flavours can really shine through. Perfect with chicken.
Crémant is the discerning drinker’s first choice alternative to Champagne. It’s made in exactly the same way – and with just as much care as it’s pricier northern cousin. But it’s a fraction of the price. Crémant de Loire is made from Chenin Blanc. The grape shares a lot of characteristics with Champagne’s Chardonnay – not least that their naturally high, citrussy acidity is absolutely ideal for fizz. Bouvet Ladubay are the experts when it comes to drawing out Chenin’s naturally delicate, floral aromas. After all, they’ve been doing it for 170 years. It’s really delicious fizz with a nice zingy, zesty freshness mingling with soft honeysuckle and apple flavours. Of course, with this quality and value it’s a go-to party wine. But it’s also delicious with the sweetness of seared scallops.
Thirty years ago, Minuty took a gamble. They started making a new style of rosé, based on freshness above all else. These new, incredibly pale rosés became the benchmark for today’s most popular style of rosé – pale, herby, refreshing Provence pink. And Minuty really is the gold standard. Its famous fluted bottle is instantly recognisable as a sign of quality – and style is more than matched by substance. Not only are Minuty one of the very last châteaux in Provence to pick their grapes by hand, they’re also one of only fourteen châteaux to be designated cru classé. It’s white peachy. It’s grapefruity. It’s fresh. It really is the taste of an idyllic summer. Spending thirty years pioneering and perfecting this type of rosé has more than paid off. And it’s a dream with a salad niçoise.
Marie-Louise de Nonancourt knew what it took to run a Champagne house with the potential to become a household name. She steered the house through the Second World War until the return of her son, Bernard, from fighting with the French Resistance. No hero worship here, she insisted he do every job his future employees would have to. As a result, Bernard de Nonancourt was the only head of a Champagne house to have worked as a vines labourer, cellar and office worker and salesman. It gave him a complete grounding in the business which he fermented into the household name Laurent Perrier is today. The signature fresh, light, citrussy style is his invention. It’s appley and peachy. Of course, it’s a deliciously indulgent aperitif – especially because it’s excellent with canapés.

You’ll be in good company when you uncork a bottle of this Brut. It’s affectionately known as the ‘President’s Choice’ because it was served at both Nelson Mandela’s inauguration and Barack Obama’s presidential win. It’s an ‘MCC’, méthode cap Classique – a style identical to the traditional method used to make Champagne, using Chardonnay and Pinot Noir too. It means it’s a real steal for fizz fans who love the taste of Champagne – but not the price. Fresh but creamy. Full of limey citrus flavours – it’s got a lovely briochey richness from its second fermentation in bottle. It’s fantastic with cheesy nibbles
