My Majestic Wine journey has brought me back to my hometown of Leeds. I'm a fan of all things Malbec as well as rich, creamy Chardonnay for whites. I guess you could say i'm a firm purple/ yellow in terms of our shiny new in-store layout. I'm an avid football fan so please pop in if you would like a chat about Wine or the Mighty Leeds United.

IT'S WINE TRIVIA MONDAY AGAIN YAY! Today we address the commonly asked question: why do some Rioja wines have gold foil around the bottle? Well, look no further for your answer, here's Chris to tell you why:

"The gold foil was introduced towards the end of the 19th century by the Marquis de Riscal as a means to combat tampering. The wines had become so successful that counterfeiting had become a real issue. Over the years this trend caught on, not just as a means to stop tampering, but as a sign of prestige. Because let's face it, it looked cool and had the effect of indicating quality. A good early marketing strategy...!"

So take that to your next pub quiz!

Happy International Women's Day! We are proud to stock some fabulous wines that have been produced by women winemakers all around the world. Here's a little bit of info on just a few of these exciting products:

Margaret River Vasse Felix Filius Chardonnay:
Virginia Willcock has been Chief winemaker at Vasse Felix since 2006, and is one of the most awarded female winemakers in Australia. The critically acclaimed estate is the founding vineyard in Margaret River itself. Virginia firmly believes that the region could be one of the best in the world. She might just be right. Under her guidance Vasse Felix is producing award winning Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays and Sauvignon/Semillon blends. The Vasse Felix Filius Chardonnay is just one of these great wines that we stock at Majestic, and it definitely meets expectatations! With flavours of lemon, peach, apple and vanilla, along with its soft texture and crisp acidity, this is a stunningly rich and complex wine!

Martin Codax Albarino:
Katia Alvarez has headed up Martin Codax for more than a decade. An Albarino specialist, Katia is widely regarded as a top ten Spanish winemaker. And growing up amongst a family of Albarino lovers has been a principal driving force for her to turn a passion into a career. Respect for the grape and direct, constant contact with production have been cornerstones of her success, and the Martin Codaz Albarino is a prime example of this craftsmanship. Flavours of lemon, apricot and peach are balanced with a crisp minerality of wet stone and a saline complexity from the region's coastal influences.

Nyetimber:
Cherie Spriggs at Nyetimber joined the vineyard in 2007. By 2018 she became the only winemaker outside of Champagne to win Sparkling Winemaker of the Year, firmly cementing Nyetimber as a challenger to all the big boys in the fizz world. An English success story, Cherie and Nyetimber use all the proper champagne wine making methods to produce a quality sparkling wine. A modern classic and an ever-growing favourite amongst the Champagne lovers!

So here's to women everywhere, and especially those wonderful winemakers, we raise a toast to you! CHEERS!

ITALIAN WINES EXPLAINED!

If you're new to Italian wines, this week is a great time to make some interesting discoveries and expand your wine knowledge! We're now in our second week of our Italian promotion, and there are some great - and unusual - wines to be tasted! To help you decipher what's what and decode some of their names, here's a little bit of info on some of our favourites...

Nero Oro Grillo Appassimento - 'Grillo' is a white grape found in Sicily, which is most commonly used to make the fortified wine Marsala. Generally, the Grillo grape will produce wines that are light and floral, but the producers at Nero Oro have used the appassimento method here (a method of drying the grapes to concentrate the flavours), creating a wine with a richer body as well as stone fruit and honey flavours. Currently on offer at £7.49 (Mix Six).

La Casetta Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso - Valpolicella is a wine-growing area in Verona where the wines tend to be made from Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara. The 'superiore' refers to the high quality of the grapes used. Here the producers have used the ripasso method, where extra grape skins (already fermented) are added to the Valpolicella wine as it ferments, giving it extra flavour, body, tannin and alcohol! 'La Casetta' from producers Domini Veneti is a great example of this, with decadent stewed fruit flavours and rounded texture. Currently on offer at £12.99 (Mix Six).

La Marca 'Extra Dry' Prosecco Superiore Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG - Prosecco wines are made from the white grape Glera and will come from either Prosecco DOC or - as in this case - the more prestigious Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG. This area produces higher quality fruit on slopes that are so steep that everything must be done by hand. It therefore creates more elegant Prosecco wines, as demonstrated here by the La Marca 'Extra Dry', which has a creamy soft mousse with ripe flavours of white peach, apple and citrus. Currently on offer at £9.99 (Mix Six).

Our Italian promotion runs until end of the day Monday 8th, so you still have plenty of time to pop down and see us in store. Equally, give us a call on 0113 224 9735 or drop us an email at lsn@majestic.co.uk to place an order for delivery.

SALUTI!

It’s WIGIG Wednesday! 🍷🇦🇺🐂🍏

WIGIG stands for “When It’s Gone It’s Gone” and these wines follow a great Majestic tradition of tracking down  “special buy” parcels of wine - Snap them up while you can!

Last week our store manager Jamie enjoyed a bottle of Son of a Bull Riesling from Tasmania; Australia’s island state. Here’s what he had to say about it!

“This is a vibrant and racy Riesling - displaying extreme freshness with notes of crisp green apple and lemon/ lime fruity notes. This wine will dance on the tastebuds and leave a clean cooling sensation on the palate. Best enjoyed during it’s youth as an aperitif or with aromatic flavours such as spicy Thai dishes. I would recommend this if you are looking for something a little different to your New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs or Picpoul de Pinet! Wines from Tasmania can be a little harder to come by - So we are lucky to have this on our shelves.

I enjoyed it with a Malaysian fish curry dish on Valentines Day and found it to be an ideal match!”

Review from Jono: Creation Wines Chardonnay 2020 - Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa

This stunning Chardonnay from the up and coming Hemel-en-Aarde wine region in South Africa was tipped as being one of the best new additions to our range last year, and it has not disappointed. Staff and customers alike have been so impressed with the value for the stunning value for money of this wine. It was even voted as the best new world wine by Majestic staff at our last yearly awards.

The Hemel-en-Aarde region boasts some of South Africa’s most respected producers. Creation, a relatively new winery, is definitely one to watch and is firmly earning its place alongside some of the best. The region is characterised breezes coming in from the Atlantic and cool evening temperatures, which are ideal for ripening Chardonnay perfectly and retaining freshness in the wine.

Creation Chardonnay has become a personal favourite. To me it offers unparalleled quality at this price, and can rival some of our best village level Burgundy whites. It has layers of fresh citrus and stone fruits, with a fresh acidity, along with complex notes of butter, cream and flint. This wine will be perfect to pair with creamy chicken or fish dishes. At £12.99 mix 6, it’s an absolute bargain.

If you are interested in getting hold of some delicious Creation Chardonnay, or trying their Pinot Noir, just give us a call or ping us an email!

WINE TRIVIA MONDAY!

DID YOU KNOW: Until this year, sparkling Italian rosé was NOT technically Prosecco and so was not allowed to be labelled as such, as Italian wine laws stated that Prosecco must be made 100% from the white grape Glera… BUT… Last year these laws changed, and Rosé Prosecco is now officially a thing, YAY! There are still some strict rules in place:

1. Rosé Prosecco MUST be made from Glera and Pinot Noir only, and Pinot Noir can only make up 10-15% of the blend
2. The wine can only be produced in two styles: Brut Nature and Extra Dry
3. The wine must be made using the Martinotti/Charmat method and must spend a minimum of 60 days undergoing secondary fermentation in a pressurised tank
4. Maximum grape yields are 18 tonnes/ha for Glera and 13.5 tonnes/ha for Pinot Noir
5. The wine must be a vintage wine with the ‘Millesimato’ (vintage/harvest) stated on the label, and a minimum of 85% of the fruit must come from the stated vintage

Whoa… But what fun is all of this info if you can’t try it?! So our lovely buyers at Majestic have secured for us this DELICIOUS Rosé Prosecco from La Gioiosa! Delicate and fruity with notes of strawberries and cream, this is now officially a new staff favourite.

If you’d like to read more about Rosé Prosecco, check out the Decanter article listed below. And if you’d like to give it a try, pop down to see us in store or drop us an email/phone call and we’ll get you sorted with some fantastic La Gioiosa Rosé Prosecco, currently just £9.99 (Mix Six). ENJOY! Team Majestic Wine Leeds x
