The tasting counter is back with a vengeance.

It's been a while since we've been able to offer you samples but we're very glad to say that we're now back to the full Majestic experience. In spite of the forecast - we're ever the optimists about a bank holiday weekend - we've got a couple of delightful roses open to taste, including the Provencal box office banker Miraval! There is a trip up to the alpine region of Haute Savoie with a beautifully poised Jacquere, aptly named Altus, from Jean Perrier. We've got a French Pinot Noir and Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero to round things off heartily. We look forward to seeing you!

There is a new Grüner Veltliner in town and we’re excited.

The Hyperflux comes straight from Weinviertel, which translates as ‘the wine quarter’, in North-Eastern Austria.

Young Johannes Zillinger took over from his father Hans in 2012. Hans had been an early adopter of organic farming in the region, a legacy that continues to be championed by his son. Johannes integrated certain elements of biodynamic farming into their ‘interfere as little as possible’ regime. Think polyculture, home-made compost, a focus on soil nutrition and generally working with mother nature to encourage healthy vines to produce beautiful grapes.

This philosophy continues in the winery where a ‘less is more’ approach informs their every move. Johannes introduced amphora to accompany old oak barrels and stainless steel tanks depending on the style they wish to create. The Hyperflux is made predominantly in stainless steel with a small proportion of amphora.

The wine is a triumph bristling with vibrant, well-defined flavours; freshly-picked apple, zest of lime, delicate white pepper spice. On the palate things get really groovy. A babbling brook of acidity carries a raft of Granny Smith, ginger and lovage downstream. It is ebulliently refreshing but has a sense of gravitas with a lovely weight and at 11% abv the Hyperflux is a great Spring addition to a 6 person (max) al fresco lunch or a ‘treat yourself Tuesday’ evening.

The lowdown:

From Austria’s Wine Quarter Wienviertel - north east of Vienna

100% Grüner Veltliner

Organic & Biodynamic farming

Stainless steel & Amphora

Try this with;

Salade Niçoise / Sea bass / Poached chicken salad

You should Hyperflux if you enjoy;

Picpoul / Dry Riesling / Muscadet / Sauvignon Blanc

£14.99 / £12.99 on the mix six

Does anyone fancy a trip to South Africa? Raise your hands. Premature as that thought may be there's no reason why we can't bring a bit of South Africa into our homes here. There are some fantastic deals on South African wines this week so worth jumping online, picking up the phone or popping into store to grab a delectable bargain.
Our initial Team Cambridge picks are as follows;

Creation Chardonnay at £10.99 (mix six) - a stunning combination of South African sun and Swiss precision from the Hemel-en-Aarde valley. There is a reason this place is called heaven and earth. A wine with beautiful poise, a delicate lick of oak and elegant finish.

Cape of Good Hope Chenin at £13.99 (mix six) - South Africa's noblest white variety. They really do produce some of the best Chenins in the world, often from beautiful old vines. The Cape of Good Hope will put a smile on your face. Great balance, streak of acidity and crescendo of tropical fruit across the palate like waves crashing on the eponymous rocky headland.

The Chocolate Block at £19.99 (mix six) - This wine almost needs no introduction these days, such has been the success of Marc Kent's project. One of the current crop of South African winemakers who have breathed new life into the industry in multifarious ways, Marc's passion and adroitness at blending is in evidence vintage after vintage - 2020 was tricky year mind as he was caught in Amsterdam for lockdown so had to do the blending over Zoom with his team back in the Swartland. For the uninitiated, the Chocolate Block is a wine of depth, richness but with a lightness of touch - the dash of Viognier to complement the darker Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon just lifts the aromatics and keeps you coming back for more.

We'll be adding to these favourites as the week goes on. Come in and pepper us with questions if you'd like to learn more.
