Wine of the Week: Parrilla Malbec £7.99Date published: 16/04/15

Wine of the Week: Parrilla Malbec £7.99

Parrilla Malbec - Mendoza, Argentina

Available to taste!

Argentinian Malbec…

Argentinian Malbec has been one of the most successful wines on the global market over the last few years.

In the 80s and 90s winemakers started to become aware of the potential to produce quality wines in Argentina. It was Malbec, already widely planted in Mendoza, that winemakers realised could be more than just a grape used in a blended wine.

With “savoir faire” from an influx of French and Spanish winemakers and local knowledge, Argentinian Malbec has established itself as a go to wine for great quality and value with a difference

Parrilla is an Argentinian word for a barbeque. These are not the types of barbeque that we tend to have in Britain. The grills can be anything up to 20ft in length and meat is cooked anywhere from 45 minutes to many hours. A parrilla tends to be a local event where the whole community comes together. The struck matches on the bottle are a reminder of the fires around which communities gather..

What makes this wine different...

Parrilla is designed to really highlight the quality of the Malbec grapes used to make the wine. The wine is aged for a relatively short period of time and only 30% of the grapes are aged in oak barrels. The purpose of which is to allow the fruitiness of the wine to shine through. This wine is smooth, soft and crammed full of plum and blackberry flavours.

Why buy this wine…

The wine was made specifically for and is exclusive to Majestic. The wine was designed to allow the drinker to fully appreciate the deep fruity flavour that is Malbec.

Malbec World Day! Hooray!Date published: 13/04/15

Malbec World Day is celebrated on April 17, to commemorate the day when president Domingo Faustino Sarmiento ofArgentina officially made it his mission to transform Argentina's wine industry. On that day, back in 1853, he tasked Michel Aimé Pouget, a French soil expert, to bring over new vines. Amongst his selection, was Malbec. Pouget continued experimenting with the adaptation of French varietals to Argentina’s diverse terroirs. A decade later, France underwent a Phylloxera Plague that affected the Rhône region. In the mean time, Malbec flourished in Argentina creating wines widely superior than those of its country of origin. Many decades later, in 1956, France faced another obstacle: a freeze wiped out the majority of Malbec vineyards.

In the following years, specifically during the 90’s, Argentina positioned Malbec as their star varietal. More than 10.000 acres were planted and it became the undeniable leader of the country’s exportations. Wine lovers around the world, especially in the United States, discovered and praised Argentine Malbec.

We are celebratin by having a whole week dedicated to the wonderful Argentinian wines and will have a fabulous Malbec as our wine of the week. Also, on Thursday 16th April we will be hosting a spotlight on Argentina tasting at 18:30 that is free for all to attend. If you would like to come along please call 0115 948 0886 or email nhm@majestic.co.uk

Beer of the Week: Trooper any Iron Maiden fans out there?Date published: 11/04/15

Trooper - Created by Iron Maiden, brewed by Robinson’s

Introducing Trooper

The beer is named after an Iron Maiden song called “The Trooper”, which was inspired by the poem “The Charge of The Light Brigade” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden, played a major role in developing the unique flavour of this beer.

The Brewery

Robinson’s have been brewing for six generations, since 1838.

The brewery is still family run and is well-known in its home county of Cheshire.

How did the beer come about?

When Robinson’s approached Bruce Dickinson about making a beer. Bruce said: “I'm a lifelong fan of traditional English ale; I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when we were asked to create our own beer. I have to say that I was very nervous: Robinson's are the only people I have had to audition for in 30 years. Their magic has been to create the alchemical wedding of flavour and texture that is TROOPER. I love it."

So, how much does it cost...?

Brad and Angelina's wine on it's way to Majestic NottighamDate published: 11/04/15

Brad and Angelina's wine on it's way to Majestic Nottingham

The wine that is made on the estate owned by Brad and Angelina, Miraval, in the beautiful Provence region is on it's way to your local Majestic wine. I can promise you that this is a GREAT wine, it is not a celebrity endorsed fad, it is a superbly made Provence Rose that many are saying is one of the best out there!

We are selling this at £17.99 a bottle and will have good stocks all Summer, and even more exciting we will be stocking the magnums! These are £38 and make a fantastic centre piece to any BBQ or dinner party.

I personally enjoy drinking Provence Rose in the Summer (sometimes the Winter as well!) and think it is a great wine to enjoy with food, especially slightly spiced dishes such as chilli and king prawn linguine, pad Thai or a paella. It stands up really well to a little spice and comes alive!

We now have a limited amount of Finca Carelio back in stock after it flew off the shelves a few weeks ago.

The wine has mellowed over 30 months' maturation mostly in barrel. Complex and layered, this wine offers rich aromas of ripe blackberries, leather and vanilla, and is wonderfully plush on the palate. Dry tannins and mature, lightly raisined fruit characters

Citra has won many awards since the first brew in 2011, culminating in being awarded the Champion Golden Ale at the CAMRA Great British Beer awards in 2014.

Wines of the Week: New arrivals - Russian Jack from NZ!

Russian Jack Wines from New Zealand

Who was Russian Jack?

Russian Jack (formally known as Barrett Crumen) was a sailor of either Latvian or Ukrainian origin who jumped ship in Wellington. He spent the next 53 years wandering along the lanes of Wairarapa, working as a swagger. Swaggers cleared the scrub from the land, leaving rich, fertile lands which became the vineyards of Martinborough. There is a statue celebrating Russian Jack’s life in Masterton.

The Russian Jack Pinot Noir

The Russian Jack is a wonderful introduction to Martinborough Pinot Noir. The colour is vibrant and deep with aromas of plum and raspberry and spicy cinnamon characteristics.

Beer of the Week:Alhambra 1925 open to taste!Date published: 25/02/15

Beer of the Week

Alhambra 1925 Reserva 6*330ml Bottles, 6.4%

The Alhambra brewery was founded in Granada, Andalusia, in 1925 and is named after the city's magnificent Alhambra Palace. Regarded as the leading craft brewery in Spain, despite the arrival of modern equipment little has changed in the overall brewing process since 1925. All Alhambra beers are made with no additives and the water used is still drawn from the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The traditional method employed by Alhambra for this beer involves slow, natural fermentation over a period of 35 days. This strong lager has a deep golden colour, and distinctive hop and caramel aromas. The unique bottle is a nod to the bottles used originally in 1925 when the brewery was founded - a Spanish icon, it has no label with all the branding and legal information embossed on the bottle.

"Pours a good fluffy head. Golden amber with lightly toasted aromas. Full-bodied, with a constant, well-rounded and very pleasing taste. Perfect balance of bitter and sweet flavours, with notes ranging from bitter orange to a slightly caramel finish"

The £4.99 Range (Quintessential Quaffers and Perfect Party )Date published: 15/10/14

Silver Ghost Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Central Valley

Chile's Central Valley is the very hub of the country's wine production. Extending southwards from the capital Santiago, between the Andes and the Coastal Range of mountains, it is the home of many of the first vineyards to have been planted by European vignerons.

Invitingly fruity, offering a juicy citrus and gooseberry backbone overlaid with notes of lime zest and fresh green apples. Crisp acidity provides maximum refreshment.

Chill well and enjoy on its own or with simply fresh pasta dishes.

Silver Ghost Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Central Valley

Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted grape in Chile, and was among the first of the noble varieties to have been brought over from Europe in the mid-1800's. This example is made by one of the Central Valley's major wineries, based in Cachapoal.

A medium-bodied, fruit-driven style of Cabernet that offers rounded, ripe red berry fruit with a plummy and easy-going feel. Hints of green pepper and subtle oak notes on the nose.

A versatile pairing for many foods, from spicy kebabs to roasted veg

Bricchetto Trebbiano 2013 IGT Rubicone

Under various different names and guises, Trebbiano is one of Europe's most extensively planted white grape varieties, found in innumerable blends and styles, but it is generally only the Italians who use it to make this kind of single-varietal dry white.

Fresh and straightforward, this wine offers plenty of soft citrus, white peach and pear fruit, with subtle white flower aromatics. Dry, soft-edged and clean on the finish.

Chill well and enjoy on its own, or with lightly-dressed salads or creamy spaghetti dishes.

Bricchetto Sangiovese 2013 IGT Rubicone

Made by one of Italy's major cooperatives, this is a superb value Sangiovese from Rubicone, a relatively modern IGT region of central Italy in which many wineries have begun to specialise in single-varietal wines such as this.

A light and approachable red, with Sangiovese's typical redcurrant and cherry fruit characters in abundance. Lithe tannins and snappy acidity make for an easy-drinking feel.

A great all-rounder, easy to pair with a wide range of pasta dishes or Mediterranean salads.

El Torito Merlot 2013 Valdepeñas

The southerly location of Valdepeñas gives it a very warm, arid continental climate, which particularly suits robust red grape varieties that benefit from the abundant sunshine and lengthy ripening season that this affords.

Cool fermented for a youthful, fruit driven style, this is a soft and plummy Merlot with supple tannins and a juicy palate full of ripe cherry and berry flavours.

Enjoy with barbecued ribs or sausage casserole.

El Torito Chardonnay 2013 Valdepeñas

Valdepeñas is one of Spain's more southerly wine regions, and is located entirely within the larger La Mancha region. Its reputation for quality and value has led to an increasing array of grapes being cultivated, including international white varieties.

A soft, fruity and easy-drinking Chardonnay, full of golden apple and ripe peach flavours, complemented by gentle tropical notes. Light and refreshing yet lush and delicately creamy on the finish.

Enjoy on its own or with lightly spiced chicken dishes.

It's Here - The Craft Beer Revolution!Date published: 18/06/14

It's Here - The Craft Beer Revolution!

Gone are the days of boring beer. Walk into any pub, bar or restaurant and you can get so more than just a carling on draught! Micro-breweries are popping up everywhere and why not - there is so much variation with the humble hop and barley that there is ample opportunity to carve a little niche in a rapidly expanding market.

We like to think that, at Majestic, we have spent our time searching, researching and of course, tasting our way around as many craft breweries as possible. We have some great beers and our range is expanding every day. And, whats more, if you buy any two of our craft ales, you save £6!!

Here are just a few beers that you must try this summer. Don't ask questions, just trust us!

Einstok Icelandic White Ale - £9.99

From the north of Iceland, this is modelled on the traditional Belgian witbier. Infused with coriander and orange peel, this is a zesty little thing. It maintains a fine balance between full bodied and light and, ultimately, is incredibly refreshing after a long day at work!

Punk IPA - £9.99

The growing empire of Scottish company Brewdog is a testament to their skill and dedication in making fine beer. Punk IPA is a light, golden beer with plenty of tropical fruits and a hit of refreshing citrus.

Brooklyn Summer Ale - £9.99

From the guys at Brooklyn comes a slightly lighter, fresher beer. Light enough for lager lovers and meaty enough for ale lovers, this is the perfect blend! Crisp and clean, this is those who enjoy a flavoursome tipple

New @Thornbridge Brewery Beers in Stock!Date published: 08/06/14

New Thornbridge Brewery Beers in Stock!

Since opening in 2005, Thornbridge have created an epic range of beers and in doing so, gained a large set of loyal followers. With the success of the Halycon, Jaipur and Wild Swan, we've decided to treat those loyal followers and expand our Thornbridge offering.

We've got three new beers in stock:

Tzara - 4.8% - this is a hybrid beer somewhere in between a lager and an ale, so you enjoy the best of both worlds!Fruity, crisp and refreshing, you can see why this won best Kolsch beer in the 2013 world beer awards. £25.80, case of 12 (Bottled ale mixed offer)

Colorado Red - 5.9% - a hopped real ale with subtle flavours of toffee, malt and fragrant hops. Fantastic balance and a citrus finish that makes this very moreish! £27.60, case of 12 (Bottled ale mixed offer)

Saint Petersburg - 7.4% - so named as this is an Imperial Russian Stout. A full bodied stout with plenty of chocolate and malt flavours and a long, coffee tinged finish. One for the stout lovers! £63.60, case of 12 (Bottle ale mixed offer)

Don't miss out, these beers won't be around long!!

Help; my wine is corked!Date published: 26/05/14

Unfortunately, cork taint is an inevitable problem when sealing wine with natural cork. Here at Majestic, however, we feel it shouldn't cause you any hassle!

It's as easy as pie for us to replace; either we can credit the value of the bottle against your next order, or we can do a simple swap and change for you.

If ordering online or over the phone, be sure to put a note in the delivery instructions space to say that you have a bottle you'd like to return due to it being corked or just mention it to us when ordering over the phone. We can then arrange to collect and replace the offending bottle when delivering.

If you prefer to see our smiling faces in store, you can return the bottle to us here and we can exchange it!

All we ask that you keep the bottle and some of the wine inside, so that we can record the nature of the fault and helping to assist our suppliers in their quality control.

Why doesn't wine taste like grapes?!Date published: 10/03/14

It is a little ironic that wine is made entirely from grapes and yet if you have a glass, it rarely tastes like grapes. In fact, it can taste of almost anything, from pineapple to lemon (for white wine), from plum, to leather (in the case of red wine).

Some people even think that small amounts of these fruits are added to wine to change the flavour, but it is in fact the extremely complex process of wine-making which actually changes the chemical compounds found in the grapes so that they resemble those found in other fruits.

Almost every step of the wine-making process can change the flavour and body of the wine, for example the can undergo Malalactic Fermentation, which changes the harsh Malic Acid (acid found in apples, lemons etc) into Lactic Acid (acids found in dairy). New World Chardonnay often undergoes this process to turn an appley, citrusy wine into a creamy, buttery wine.

If you would like to know more about these processes, simply ask a member of staff next time you are in store and they will be happy to go into more detail.
