Marvellous Malbec!Date published: 29/05/15

Hello Majestic fans, today I wish to talk to you about something currently on our tasting counter- an Argentinian Malbec. 'Hey Malbec!' sports a particularly eye-catching label. It's cartoon in design but I must say the wine itself belies its light-hearted label. It's has distinct flavour, one which stays on the tongue and the mind long after the last sip has been imbibed. It has hints of black pepper with a refreshing, almost cleansing, taste. The aforementioned taste is balanced well with an undercurrent of black fruits. It seems only fitting that Argentina's gastronomic speciality, that of steak, goes particularly nicely with this wine. Its mild spice and refreshing flavour would only be enhanced by a fantastically prepared steak- perhaps outside, weather permitting!

#WOTW Vina Mayu Pedro XimenezDate published: 14/05/15

Wine of the Week: Viña Mayu Dry Pedro Ximenez

Available to taste!

Who’s Pedro Ximenez…?

It’s not a man, it’s a grape variety!

There are many theories about the origin of the name:

A Spanish soldier named Pedro Ximen or a Catholic Cardinal named Ximenès who originally transported the grapes from the Canary Islands and Madeira to the Spanish mainland.

The village of Jiménez in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where the grapes may have derived from.

As Ximénez and Jiménez are common surnames in Iberia, another theory is that the grape was named after a notable vintner who helped propagate the variety in the region.

Pedro Ximenez (aka PX) is Spanish grape variety. It’s mainly famous for producing Spain's rich dessert sherries, but also in Chile as the basis of pisco, the local brandy.

It’s a diverse grape which is also capable of being crafted into an intriguingly aromatic and crisp dry white, as this example shows.

The wine is really refreshing and zingy. It has citrusy flavours, particularly lemon and lime, and a crisp fruity aroma. Enjoy with mussels cooked in white wine (it wouldn’t work with a cream sauce).

Why should I buy it…?

Wines of the week!Date published: 06/05/15

Wines of the week: Bienbebido Pulpo y Bienbebido Queso - Spain

Available to taste!

What is Bienbebido…

Bienbebido are a range of wines produced by our friends at Vintae. Bienbebido loosely translates as good drinking. The wines in this range are all about food and wine matching. The phrase on the bottle is “Come ------ y bebe vino” - “Eat ------ and drink wine”. Vintae have come up with a range of wines to match specific foods. Majestic is stocking pulpo (octopus) and queso (cheese).

The inspiration...

Wine and food matching is something we love doing at Majestic. Customers regularly ask for advice for a wine to go with a particular dish. Vintae have taken this a step further. Their wish was to create a wine to match a specific food. Inspired by the Spanish Tapas culture, Vintae brought together oenologists, sommeliers, chefs and wine enthuiasts to define tastes and flavours of dishes. Armed with these findings Vintae experimented with different grapes, different regions and differing ways of ageing the wine to find the perfect match. The Bienbebido wines are the result!

Join in the fun...

These wines are all about enjoying wine and food. The fun and funky labels reflect the window displays often used on tapas bar windows throughout Spain.

Do you have a favourite? Tweet @majesticwine using #comepulpo or #comequeso. We’d also love to see photos of you enjoying the wine and sampling the food. We’ll award a case of the wine to the winner for our favourite tweet using one of these hashtags over the weekend,

Wine of the Week: Bourgogne Les Chenaudieres-BurgundyDate published: 02/05/15

Wine of the week: Bourgogne Les Chenaudières - Burgundy

Available to taste!

Burgundy is one of world’s most famous wine growing regions. Situated to the South East of Paris it is famed for many top appellations such as Chablis, Gevrey-Chambertin and Chassagne-Montrachet. Both red and white wines are produced in Burgundy, with the dominant grapes being Pinot Noir for reds and Chardonnay for whites.

The ABC club...

Are you familiar with the ABC “anything but Chardonnay” club?! This is a phrase often used when ordering wine. Through the 1990s a lot of Chardonnay wines were imported from the New World which had a very heavy oak influence, achieved using non-traditional methods. The consequence was wines that were unbalanced and is what put some people off Chardonnay as a grape variety. At Majestic we love Chardonnay, oaked and unoaked. It is a great grape with a huge range of styles from a vast number of countries.

Why buy this wine...

Bourgogne Les Chenaudières is a great introduction to white Burgundy without you having to spend too much. It is made by a cooperative, Cave de Lugny, the largest producer in the Mâconnais. Cave de Lugny has access to a large array of vineyards and selects the best quality grapes for their wines.

The result is an elegant wine. It has flavours of apple and pear, with a refreshing crispness. The wine is unoaked but it does have some body, which is created by the traditional method of leaving the wine in contact with the yeast used for fermentation right up until it is bottled.

So, if you’re a member of the ABC club, give this a try to see if you change your mind...

Chandon Brut NV Argentina

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay

Following two years of exploration, Moët & Chandon identified a fine vineyard location in Mendoza's Uco Valley, planting it in 1959. They have gone on to use their abundance of Champagne expertise to create this traditional-method sparkling wine.

A fresh and elegant style of sparkling wine, with a nose centring on citrus, pineapple and white peach aroma with subtle brioche hints, and a palate with great accuracy and length.

Celebrate any occasion with this great quality Champagne alternative, pairing with seafood canapés.

Chandon Rosé NV Argentina

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay

Moët & Chandon have created this complex sparkling rosé by combining the fruit of several vineyards of varying altitude, using a traditional method of blending the juice with a controlled portion of Pinot Noir base wines, and 18 months' lees aging in bottle.

Rose pink with a sunny, peachy hue. Aromas are predominantly of citrus and stone fruit, accented by hints of cherry and pie crust. The strawberries-and-cream palate is carried by a voluminous mousse.

A wonderful aperitif-style rosé for any special occasion.

Allegrini Bardolino Rosso - Italy

Available to taste!

Explore Italy…

Italy is not only a beautiful country, but one that is steeped in great wines and winemaking history. When it comes to choosing wine, Italy is one of those countries where many might understandably feel less comfortable as the wines are defined by the region they come from rather than the grape variety used to make the wine.

All Majestic staff are very knowledgeable about wine and are here to help. So if you have any questions please just ask.

Bardolino: the area and the wine...

Bardolino is a small town located on the Eastern shore of Lake Garda in the region of Veneto. It is a beautiful walled city which is now a popular tourist destination.

The wine is a blend of three indigenous grapes: Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara.

Why buy this wine...

Our Buyer Suzie said: “This is a perfect summer wine. It has vibrant red fruit characteristics and could be lightly chilled.”

This wine is a great introduction to the fascinating wines that Italy has to offer and would be great with pizza or pasta.

Beer of the Week: Trooper any Iron Maiden fans out there?Date published: 11/04/15

Trooper - Created by Iron Maiden, brewed by Robinson’s

Introducing Trooper

The beer is named after an Iron Maiden song called “The Trooper”, which was inspired by the poem “The Charge of The Light Brigade” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden, played a major role in developing the unique flavour of this beer.

The Brewery

Robinson’s have been brewing for six generations, since 1838.

The brewery is still family run and is well-known in its home county of Cheshire.

How did the beer come about?

When Robinson’s approached Bruce Dickinson about making a beer. Bruce said: “I'm a lifelong fan of traditional English ale; I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when we were asked to create our own beer. I have to say that I was very nervous: Robinson's are the only people I have had to audition for in 30 years. Their magic has been to create the alchemical wedding of flavour and texture that is TROOPER. I love it."

So, how much does it cost...?

Brad and Angelina's wine on it's way to Majestic Nottingham

The wine that is made on the estate owned by Brad and Angelina, Miraval, in the beautiful Provence region is on it's way to your local Majestic wine. I can promise you that this is a GREAT wine, it is not a celebrity endorsed fad, it is a superbly made Provence Rose that many are saying is one of the best out there!

We are selling this at £17.99 a bottle and will have good stocks all Summer, and even more exciting we will be stocking the magnums! These are £38 and make a fantastic centre piece to any BBQ or dinner party.

I personally enjoy drinking Provence Rose in the Summer (sometimes the Winter as well!) and think it is a great wine to enjoy with food, especially slightly spiced dishes such as chilli and king prawn linguine, pad Thai or a paella. It stands up really well to a little spice and comes alive!

It's Here - The Craft Beer Revolution!Date published: 18/06/14

It's Here - The Craft Beer Revolution!

Gone are the days of boring beer. Walk into any pub, bar or restaurant and you can get so more than just a carling on draught! Micro-breweries are popping up everywhere and why not - there is so much variation with the humble hop and barley that there is ample opportunity to carve a little niche in a rapidly expanding market.

We like to think that, at Majestic, we have spent our time searching, researching and of course, tasting our way around as many craft breweries as possible. We have some great beers and our range is expanding every day. And, whats more, if you buy any two of our craft ales, you save £6!!

Here are just a few beers that you must try this summer. Don't ask questions, just trust us!

Einstok Icelandic White Ale - £9.99

From the north of Iceland, this is modelled on the traditional Belgian witbier. Infused with coriander and orange peel, this is a zesty little thing. It maintains a fine balance between full bodied and light and, ultimately, is incredibly refreshing after a long day at work!

Punk IPA - £9.99

The growing empire of Scottish company Brewdog is a testament to their skill and dedication in making fine beer. Punk IPA is a light, golden beer with plenty of tropical fruits and a hit of refreshing citrus.

Brooklyn Summer Ale - £9.99

From the guys at Brooklyn comes a slightly lighter, fresher beer. Light enough for lager lovers and meaty enough for ale lovers, this is the perfect blend! Crisp and clean, this is those who enjoy a flavoursome tipple

Help; my wine is corked!Date published: 26/05/14

Unfortunately, cork taint is an inevitable problem when sealing wine with natural cork. Here at Majestic, however, we feel it shouldn't cause you any hassle!

It's as easy as pie for us to replace; either we can credit the value of the bottle against your next order, or we can do a simple swap and change for you.

If ordering online or over the phone, be sure to put a note in the delivery instructions space to say that you have a bottle you'd like to return due to it being corked or just mention it to us when ordering over the phone. We can then arrange to collect and replace the offending bottle when delivering.

If you prefer to see our smiling faces in store, you can return the bottle to us here and we can exchange it!

All we ask that you keep the bottle and some of the wine inside, so that we can record the nature of the fault and helping to assist our suppliers in their quality control.

Why doesn't wine taste like grapes?!Date published: 10/03/14

It is a little ironic that wine is made entirely from grapes and yet if you have a glass, it rarely tastes like grapes. In fact, it can taste of almost anything, from pineapple to lemon (for white wine), from plum, to leather (in the case of red wine).

Some people even think that small amounts of these fruits are added to wine to change the flavour, but it is in fact the extremely complex process of wine-making which actually changes the chemical compounds found in the grapes so that they resemble those found in other fruits.

Almost every step of the wine-making process can change the flavour and body of the wine, for example the can undergo Malalactic Fermentation, which changes the harsh Malic Acid (acid found in apples, lemons etc) into Lactic Acid (acids found in dairy). New World Chardonnay often undergoes this process to turn an appley, citrusy wine into a creamy, buttery wine.

If you would like to know more about these processes, simply ask a member of staff next time you are in store and they will be happy to go into more detail.
