The Perfect Easter LunchDate published: 13/04/14

A roast leg of lamb is always associated with Easter but if you fancy doing something a little different but still keeping within the confines of lamb I think lamb shanks are the way to go.

I tried this dish the other week and it certainly was a crowd pleaser, the slowly braised shanks fell off the bone and gravy, which was enriched by a bottle of red wine and a whole load of shallots, would have turned any vegetarian.

To go with this dish we tried a fantastic Spanish wine and were very impressed with it before and during the meal;

Rioja Reserva 2009, Vina Pomal, down to £9.74 (saving 25% from £12.99)

The classic pairing of a spiced Rioja and lamb certainly didn't disappoint with velvety tannins perfectly matching the tender meat and the toasty oaky spices compliment the Rosemary and tomato throughout the sauce. This wine is a fantastic example of a Rioja reserva - the fruity notes havn't been totally removed by the oaking and you can still get fred fruits on your palate. Absolutly delicious and extremely moreish.

If you ask nicely in the store and I'm around I'll be happy to give you the recipe!

Happy eating and drinking!

Popping Champagne Deals!Date published: 07/04/14

With the evenings getting lighter and the days ticking down until Summer, it's about time to start stocking up on Champagne and sparkling wines for the upcoming weddings, parties and picnics. And with lots of our Champagnes currently on our 33.3% off Pick 'n' Mix offer, now is the best time to buy....

Here are a few of my favourites:

Oeil de Perdrix Rose NV - Meaning 'eye of the partridge', this pale salmon pink rosé Champagne exhibits enticing complexity. Delicate in style, but with a perfect weight of fruit. A fantastic apéritif and great to add a touch of elegance to your summer picnics!

£16.66 when you buy two or more bottles in the Pick and mix (£25 single bottle price)

Ruinart Brut NV - One of the oldest Champagne houses, founded in 1729, Ruinart was the first house to export Champagne. Elegant and subtle; one of the jewels in Champagne's crown.

£36.65 when you buy two or more bottles in the Pick and mix (£55 single bottle price)

Pol Roger Brut NV - Pol Roger's historic underground cellars are 33m deep and average particularly low temperatures. They thus provide an environment uniquely suited to slow fermentation, and are responsible for this Champagne's famously super-fine mousse. As my favourite wine, I'd suggest everyone tries this!

£34.98 when you buy two or more bottles in the Pick and mix (£52.50 single bottle price)

J De Telmont Grande Réserve NV - One of the few remaining, family owned Champagne houses, De Telmont produces this excellent non-vintage in a medium bodied, soft and fruity, classically yeasty style. Fabulous value at only £14.99!

£14.99 when you buy two or more bottles in the Pick and mix (£22.50 single bottle price)

G is for...Date published: 23/03/14

After a short hiatus the A-Z is back!

G is for germany.

Many people have never even tried a German wine, and boy are they missing out!

The vineyards in Germany are on steep slopes (to maximise the sunlight available) and they generally have excellent quality year after year.

One of the more popular German wines we stock is the 'Dr L' Riesling. This wine is very fragrant with notes of honey and apricot with an off-dry palate. It also has a touch of spritz and a lively acidity adds finesse and balance.

It is absolutely perfect with a spicy Asian dish, particularly Thai food.

So stop missing out on one of the more distinct regions and treat yourself!

Just ask a member of staff instore for more information about German wines.

Why doesn't wine taste like grapes?!Date published: 10/03/14

It is a little ironic that wine is made entirely from grapes and yet if you have a glass, it rarely tastes like grapes. In fact, it can taste of almost anything, from pineapple to lemon (for white wine), from plum, to leather (in the case of red wine).

Some people even think that small amounts of these fruits are added to wine to change the flavour, but it is in fact the extremely complex process of wine-making which actually changes the chemical compounds found in the grapes so that they resemble those found in other fruits.

Almost every step of the wine-making process can change the flavour and body of the wine, for example the can undergo Malalactic Fermentation, which changes the harsh Malic Acid (acid found in apples, lemons etc) into Lactic Acid (acids found in dairy). New World Chardonnay often undergoes this process to turn an appley, citrusy wine into a creamy, buttery wine.

If you would like to know more about these processes, simply ask a member of staff next time you are in store and they will be happy to go into more detail.

What we're tasting today...

Meet the team...

  • Alex Assistant Manager

Having previously worked in the Derby store, I am now based in the Nottingham store and absolutely love it! I'm a big fan of New Zealand Sauvignons and big Aussie Shiraz. I'm very partial to a bottle of Bollinger, so I find any excuse to crack open a bottle.
  • Hannah Senior Manager

I started my Majestic career in Nottingham 6 years ago, after a tour of the north west, having worked in Birkdale, Chester and most recently Macclesfield, I am back! A massive Chardonnay fan, one of my favourites being Catena Alta Chardonnay. I am also partial to a glass of Provence Rose, especially when the sun is shining!
  • Jeremy Driver

I've been working in wine for the last 4 year and now represent Majestic on the road. After a hard working week, for me, little can match a good quality Burgundian/Provencial wine.
  • Steve Trainee Manager

I've just made a short jump across Nottingham from the new North Nottingham store. I'm gaining some great wine knowledge and am developing a keen taste for Chardonnay and Syrah. I have a great love of all things food related so if you are looking for a food pairing i'll always be on hand to give you an idea.
  • Tiggy Trainee Manager

This is my second store with Majestic having previously been on the other side of the country in Worcester. I'm in the final stages of my WSET level 3, so feel free to test me! I love anything Pol Roger (gifts welcome) and am currently getting to know my Bordeaux wines - St. Emillion right banks are winning at the moment.
  • Will Senior Assistant Manager

This is my second stint in the Nottingham store so I already recognise a few faces! I'm a huge fan of all things Pinot Noir and I've been really impressed some the new Beaujolais wines that we have in this summer!

How to find us
