Wine of the Week:Symbiose Piquepoul Sauvignon Blanc 'Cuvée Florence' 2013 Côtes de ThauDate published: 16/10/14

Wine of the week!

New!

Symbiose Piquepoul Sauvignon Blanc 'Cuvée Florence' 2013 Côtes de Thau

£7.64 when you buy 2 bottles from the 15% off promotion

The Côtes de Thau is a vineyard area bordering the Thau Basin, a large body of water just inland of the Mediterranean. This region is naturally suited to viticulture, with plenty of sunshine and heat, and sea breezes tempering the effects of humidity in the vineyards.

The combination of the lean, crisp, minerally Piquepoul with Sauvignon Blanc's vibrant tropical influence produces a wine with excellent balance and a refreshing nature.

Serve chilled with fresh fish.

The £4.99 Range (Quintessential Quaffers and Perfect Party )Date published: 15/10/14

Silver Ghost Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Central Valley

Chile's Central Valley is the very hub of the country's wine production. Extending southwards from the capital Santiago, between the Andes and the Coastal Range of mountains, it is the home of many of the first vineyards to have been planted by European vignerons.

Invitingly fruity, offering a juicy citrus and gooseberry backbone overlaid with notes of lime zest and fresh green apples. Crisp acidity provides maximum refreshment.

Chill well and enjoy on its own or with simply fresh pasta dishes.

Silver Ghost Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Central Valley

Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted grape in Chile, and was among the first of the noble varieties to have been brought over from Europe in the mid-1800's. This example is made by one of the Central Valley's major wineries, based in Cachapoal.

A medium-bodied, fruit-driven style of Cabernet that offers rounded, ripe red berry fruit with a plummy and easy-going feel. Hints of green pepper and subtle oak notes on the nose.

A versatile pairing for many foods, from spicy kebabs to roasted veg

Bricchetto Trebbiano 2013 IGT Rubicone

Under various different names and guises, Trebbiano is one of Europe's most extensively planted white grape varieties, found in innumerable blends and styles, but it is generally only the Italians who use it to make this kind of single-varietal dry white.

Fresh and straightforward, this wine offers plenty of soft citrus, white peach and pear fruit, with subtle white flower aromatics. Dry, soft-edged and clean on the finish.

Chill well and enjoy on its own, or with lightly-dressed salads or creamy spaghetti dishes.

Bricchetto Sangiovese 2013 IGT Rubicone

Made by one of Italy's major cooperatives, this is a superb value Sangiovese from Rubicone, a relatively modern IGT region of central Italy in which many wineries have begun to specialise in single-varietal wines such as this.

A light and approachable red, with Sangiovese's typical redcurrant and cherry fruit characters in abundance. Lithe tannins and snappy acidity make for an easy-drinking feel.

A great all-rounder, easy to pair with a wide range of pasta dishes or Mediterranean salads.

El Torito Merlot 2013 Valdepeñas

The southerly location of Valdepeñas gives it a very warm, arid continental climate, which particularly suits robust red grape varieties that benefit from the abundant sunshine and lengthy ripening season that this affords.

Cool fermented for a youthful, fruit driven style, this is a soft and plummy Merlot with supple tannins and a juicy palate full of ripe cherry and berry flavours.

Enjoy with barbecued ribs or sausage casserole.

El Torito Chardonnay 2013 Valdepeñas

Valdepeñas is one of Spain's more southerly wine regions, and is located entirely within the larger La Mancha region. Its reputation for quality and value has led to an increasing array of grapes being cultivated, including international white varieties.

A soft, fruity and easy-drinking Chardonnay, full of golden apple and ripe peach flavours, complemented by gentle tropical notes. Light and refreshing yet lush and delicately creamy on the finish.

Enjoy on its own or with lightly spiced chicken dishes.

WINE OF THE WEEK San Huberto Malbec 2012 La Rioja

£7.99

Buy 2 save 33%

Down from £11.99

This wine has been made in a 'reserva' style, having undergone 12 months' ageing in oak barrels. The fruit comes from the Valle de Aminga in Argentina's aptly named La Rioja province, which has deep, sandy soils and a semi-arid climate.

An inky, almost opaque wine with a blackish-purple hue. The flavours are of plum, bramble and ripe blueberries, delivered with a forward, vigourous manner tempered by sweet, spicy oak.

Best enjoyed with red meats seasoned with mild aromatic spices and served with roasted vegetables.

Guest Beer of the Month!!!!!!!!Date published: 11/10/14

Proper Job, St Austell 12x500ml Bottles

£24 per case (offer price)

Bottled conditioned, this is a powerfully authentic IPA with a modern twist. Proper Job is brewed with a blend of imported hops, Cascade, Chinook and Willamette for a punch of citrus, pine resin and a hint of spice for a classic IPA. Stylistically this is somewhere between a traditional English IPA, and the new wave American IPAs. Voted Champion Bottled Beer by CAMRA in 2011 and second place in 2013.

Wine of the Week: St Clair Pioneer Black Sauvignon Blanc, was £19.99 NOW £14.99Date published: 30/09/14

Wine of the week: Saint Clair Pioneer Block Sauvignon Blanc 2012 Marlborough

£14.99 when you buy 2 or £19.99 for one bottle.

St Clair Winery first opened in 1979 growing Sauvignon Blanc grapes for another producer. They have since opened their own winery in 1994 and have become one of the most reputable wineries in New Zealand have a real focus on the difference terroir and small climate variations can have on a wine. This is how their Pioneer Block range came about. The Pioneer Block is from specific parcels of vines that have a distinct character the wine maker, Matt Thompson, wanted to preserve.

On the nose there is intense passionfruit and a steely, dry herbaceous character but, for me, this wine stands out from other Sauvignon's because of the underlying minerality and the long finish.

This wine is beautiful on its own or also good with Asian dishes to echo the lemongrass and fresh coriander.

It's Here - The Craft Beer Revolution!Date published: 18/06/14

It's Here - The Craft Beer Revolution!

Gone are the days of boring beer. Walk into any pub, bar or restaurant and you can get so more than just a carling on draught! Micro-breweries are popping up everywhere and why not - there is so much variation with the humble hop and barley that there is ample opportunity to carve a little niche in a rapidly expanding market.

We like to think that, at Majestic, we have spent our time searching, researching and of course, tasting our way around as many craft breweries as possible. We have some great beers and our range is expanding every day. And, whats more, if you buy any two of our craft ales, you save £6!!

Here are just a few beers that you must try this summer. Don't ask questions, just trust us!

Einstok Icelandic White Ale - £9.99

From the north of Iceland, this is modelled on the traditional Belgian witbier. Infused with coriander and orange peel, this is a zesty little thing. It maintains a fine balance between full bodied and light and, ultimately, is incredibly refreshing after a long day at work!

Punk IPA - £9.99

The growing empire of Scottish company Brewdog is a testament to their skill and dedication in making fine beer. Punk IPA is a light, golden beer with plenty of tropical fruits and a hit of refreshing citrus.

Brooklyn Summer Ale - £9.99

From the guys at Brooklyn comes a slightly lighter, fresher beer. Light enough for lager lovers and meaty enough for ale lovers, this is the perfect blend! Crisp and clean, this is those who enjoy a flavoursome tipple

Don't miss out, these beers won't be around long!!

Help; my wine is corked!Date published: 26/05/14

Unfortunately, cork taint is an inevitable problem when sealing wine with natural cork. Here at Majestic, however, we feel it shouldn't cause you any hassle!

It's as easy as pie for us to replace; either we can credit the value of the bottle against your next order, or we can do a simple swap and change for you.

If ordering online or over the phone, be sure to put a note in the delivery instructions space to say that you have a bottle you'd like to return due to it being corked or just mention it to us when ordering over the phone. We can then arrange to collect and replace the offending bottle when delivering.

If you prefer to see our smiling faces in store, you can return the bottle to us here and we can exchange it!

All we ask that you keep the bottle and some of the wine inside, so that we can record the nature of the fault and helping to assist our suppliers in their quality control.

Simples!

Why doesn't wine taste like grapes?!Date published: 10/03/14

It is a little ironic that wine is made entirely from grapes and yet if you have a glass, it rarely tastes like grapes. In fact, it can taste of almost anything, from pineapple to lemon (for white wine), from plum, to leather (in the case of red wine).

Some people even think that small amounts of these fruits are added to wine to change the flavour, but it is in fact the extremely complex process of wine-making which actually changes the chemical compounds found in the grapes so that they resemble those found in other fruits.

Almost every step of the wine-making process can change the flavour and body of the wine, for example the can undergo Malalactic Fermentation, which changes the harsh Malic Acid (acid found in apples, lemons etc) into Lactic Acid (acids found in dairy). New World Chardonnay often undergoes this process to turn an appley, citrusy wine into a creamy, buttery wine.

If you would like to know more about these processes, simply ask a member of staff next time you are in store and they will be happy to go into more detail.

What we're tasting today...

Meet the team...

  • Hannah Senior Manager

I started my Majestic career in Nottingham 6 years ago, after a tour of the north west, having worked in Birkdale, Chester and most recently Macclesfield, I am back! A massive Chardonnay fan, one of my favourites being Catena Alta Chardonnay. I am also partial to a glass of Provence Rose, especially when the sun is shining!
  • Steve Trainee Manager

I've just made a short jump across Nottingham from the new North Nottingham store. I'm gaining some great wine knowledge and am developing a keen taste for Chardonnay and Syrah. I have a great love of all things food related so if you are looking for a food pairing i'll always be on hand to give you an idea.
  • Will Senior Assistant Manager

This is my second stint in the Nottingham store so I already recognise a few faces! I'm a huge fan of all things Pinot Noir and I've been really impressed some the new Beaujolais wines that we have in this summer!
