Wine Of the Week- Raats Granite Block Cabernet Franc

    Raats Granite Block Cabernet Franc
    Was £9.99 now Only £7.99

A new wine to our range for the Spring promotion and we think it is going to be a big hit. Cabernet Franc is usually found producing soft fruity wines from the Loire Valley; however this Cabernet Franc from South Africa is a little richer and fuller bodied.

A combination of the long lengthening period, old vines and gentle oak maturation creates a smooth, yet robust wine. The time spent in oak has created integrated tannins providing a structure to the fresh red berry fruits and sweet spice flavours.

Try pairing with lamb shanks or venison.

    Fine Wine of the Month

    Petaluma Coonawarra 2008 - £20

The Petaluma winery was founded by the master wine maker Brian Croser, in the Coonawarra region of Austrialia. The Coonawarra region is located in the Limestone Coast of South Australia and is of a similar climate to the Bordeaux region.

A decanter silver award winner, this wine is predominantly a Cabernet Sauvignon blend with the addition of 30% Merlot and a final touch of Syrah. This award winning blend results in a wine with a wonderfully rich nose packed with stewed cherry, blackberries and a hint of eucalyptus. This fruit driven aroma is underlined with soft, almost sweet smell of ceder wood.

This wine continues in a similar vein on the palate with punchy fruit seamlessly integrating with supple tannins. Spicy notes follow on the mid-palate which one would come to expect from a big Aussie red. On the back end, the spice melts away into a long, smooth and lingering finish that really reveals this wine's true quality.

This wine would drink beautifully with a huge slice of beef wellington and a side of winter greens.

    Wither Hills 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

    Al

    Wither Hills 2010 Sauvignon Blanc

    £5.99

After a slightly underwhelming performance by the Scottish national rugby team in New Zealand this Autumn, the last thing I want to do is cast my mind back to the Marlborough region without good cause. Nevertheless, with the Wither Hills coming down to £5.99 on the majestic festive promotion, I felt that was cause enough to churn up the disturbing memories.

On the nose, the Wither Hills presents all the youthful elements of a traditional New Zealand sauvignon blanc with prominent notes of gooseberry and lime. However, the wither hills has certain complexity that sets it apart from other Nz Sauvignon's at this price point. The traditional citrus nose is intertwined with savoury vegetal notes of asparagus and green bell pepper. A beautiful nose for a wine at this price point.

The palate continues along the same vein. It's youthful, fresh and vibrant. Much like the Nz rugby team that won the World Cup this Autumn. Lime, a touch of minerality and tropical fruit are perfectly balanced with that interesting vegetal note, making this Nz sauvignon taste far more expensive than the £5.99 price tag would suggest.

If this wine was a rugby player, it would have to be the Kiwi winger Zac Guilford. A zippy, fresh and exciting winger, who is strong in the middle of the field, but equally has a fantastic finish. Overall this wine shows fantastic balance and poise, much like the qualities shown by New Zealand on their outstanding World Cup run.

I would match this wine with light salads, or fresh fish. An ideal compliment to Scottish smoked salmon bilini this Christmas.

Larrivet Haut Brion, Pessac- Leognan 2004

    Al

Larrivet Haut Brion, Pessac- Leognan 2004

    £23

The vineyards of Larrivet – Haut Brion lie on the same ridge of gravel as the near neighbours Haut-Bailly and La Louviere. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and around 10 000 cases are produced per annum.

The nose has notes of beautiful sweet ceder and cigar box, which immediately takes me back to the plentiful ceder forests in southern Malawi. This ceder and cigar box is enriched with blackberries and dark licorice, which combine to produce a classic red Bordeaux nose.

On the palate, the Haut-Brion has a wonderful silky smooth texture, which is supported by lip-smacking, dark fruit juiciness. The flavours of blackcurrant and licorice from the nose continue on the palate. This juicyness is underpinned by firm, yet refined tannins which contribute to this classically understated and well balanced Bordeaux.

The finish is long and luxurious with the characterful tannins suggesting a strong and powerful wine. However this is tempered by a smooth elegance that one would expect of a Bordeaux at around double the price.

Overall, whilst this is certainly a 'fine' wine due to its price, at £23 its quality is undeniable. It is drinking very well now, but has the structure to reward up to a further 10 years cellar time.

I would pair this beautiful Bordeaux with a roast lamb or beef, complimenting those characterful tannins perfectly.

The best thing about this job is trying the new wines that come into store, and then introducing customers to something they wouldn't normally consider. It's very rewarding when they come and tell me how much they enjoyed my recommendation!! As my friends will tell you I love all wine, but for me nothing beats a good bottle of Vintage Champagne. Saying that with Summer on the way I'm enjoying exploring our fantastic new range of Provence Rose's. Pop in to see us and discover what we've got to entice you!

After 18 months in the job i still find there's never a dull day. With so many new products being added to our range and plenty of majestic favourites, i dont think I'll ever get tired of tasting and learning about wine. Despite the wide range of wines i have tried, for me it is France that is king! Give me a quality aged Claret, White Burgundy, or Vintage Champagne and I'm a happy chappy. Having said that, i have been known to slurp Chilean Carmenere and Kiwi Sauvignon on many an occasion.

  • Al

    Trainee Manager

I am still finding my feet in the world of wine, however, I am finding my taste for wine, much like my appetite. Boundless. I am really enjoying crisp, tropical Sav Blanc's from the New World at the moment. As the nights draw in and the weather gets (even) worse, you will find me drinking dark, rich and chocolatey Malbec huddled in front of crackling fire. Heaven.
