Wither Hills 2010 Sauvignon Blanc
£5.99
After a slightly underwhelming performance by the Scottish national rugby team in New Zealand this Autumn, the last thing I want to do is cast my mind back to the Marlborough region without good cause. Nevertheless, with the Wither Hills coming down to £5.99
on the majestic festive promotion, I felt that was cause enough to churn up the disturbing memories.
On the nose, the Wither Hills presents all the youthful elements of a traditional New Zealand sauvignon blanc with prominent notes of gooseberry and lime. However, the wither hills has certain complexity that sets it apart from other Nz Sauvignon's at this
price point. The traditional citrus nose is intertwined with savoury vegetal notes of asparagus and green bell pepper. A beautiful nose for a wine at this price point.
The palate continues along the same vein. It's youthful, fresh and vibrant. Much like the Nz rugby team that won the World Cup this Autumn. Lime, a touch of minerality and tropical fruit are perfectly balanced with that interesting vegetal note, making this
Nz sauvignon taste far more expensive than the £5.99 price tag would suggest.
If this wine was a rugby player, it would have to be the Kiwi winger Zac Guilford. A zippy, fresh and exciting winger, who is strong in the middle of the field, but equally has a fantastic finish. Overall this wine shows fantastic balance and poise, much
like the qualities shown by New Zealand on their outstanding World Cup run.
I would match this wine with light salads, or fresh fish. An ideal compliment to Scottish smoked salmon bilini this Christmas.
