    Torcolato - a meditation wine

    Marc

    Torcolato Macullan, Veneto
    £24 buy 2 bottles save £8 - £20
    Pronunciation
    TOR-co-LAH-toe

Maculan's pride, the sublime nectar called Torcolato, has won world acclaim and recognition as one of Italy's top dessert wines. In Italy, Torcolato is considered a "meditation wine," wonderful on its own.
    Grape Variety
85% Vespaiola, 10% Tocai and 5% Garganega. Appearance
    Golden amber
    | Aroma
Rich, spicy aromas of baked pears with hints of apricots, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and hazelnuts.
    | Taste
Succulent, luscious and viscous with a mellow sweetness perfectly balanced by a spicy acidity.
    | Serving Suggestions
Excellent with flaky pastries and fruit tarts, and also with gorgonzola or other creamy cheeses.
Torcolato is made by allowing bunches of grapes to dry, usually on straw mats that are hung in long twisted hanks, concentrating the sugar. This is the only torcolato to be exported outside Italy.

Wine pf the Week - Stunning Shiraz

    Jamie

Lehmann Wines have been making quality Australian wines since their foundation in 1979.

Each vintage they keep certain parcels of fruit separate and release them as individual wines. They believe these wines to be a true expression of the varietal characters and unique terroir of the vineyards from which they are sourced. This is a superb Shiraz from exceptional Barossa vineyards in the high country of the Eden Valley - land of rugged beauty, shallow soils and a cooler climate than the lower Barossa Valley. Whilst the Eden Valley region is most associated with the noblest of white wine varieties, Riesling, it also produces fine, tautly structured Shiraz which is highly prized by Barossa winemakers.

The high country of Eden Valley is one of Australia's premier cool climate wine regions. Defined by high elevation, ancient soils and later ripening, Eden Valley wines are distinctive in their character, displaying wonderful aromas, elegance, complexity and finesse.

This shiraz is deep cherry red in colour with an abundance of dark plum flavours, a hint of spice and a soft, elegant finish.

A Spanish wine Summer for me!

    Amy

Spanish Wine Tasting with United Wineries

Just over a week ago I was lucky enough to be invited to central London to taste United Wineries' extensive range of wines.

United Wineries are a specialist wine group which own and import such prestigious wine brands as Berberana, Marques de la Concordia, Marques de Grinon and Lagunilla (all of which are stocked by Majestic!).

    Highlights of the evening included:

Durius 'Natural Reserve' Tempranillo 2006, Arribes de Duero (£7.99 or buy 2+ £5.99)

A great wine from an unknown region! 100% Tempranillo, this wine reflects the Duero tempered climate in which it is produced. Rich stewed fruit plus smooth Tannins makes it an ideal accompaniment for hearty casseroles. It is a definite bargain!

Rioja Reserva 2006, Marques de la Concordia ( £11.99 or buy 2+ £7.99)

A New World wine from Old World terroir! Spiced oak accompanied with deep dark fruit particularly Blackcurrant, notably smooth on the palate. A perfect match for your Sunday slow roast Lamb.

Rioja Gran Reserva 2005, Berberana (£14.99 or buy 2+ £11.99)

A Majestic staff favourite! This beauty has spent 3 years in American oak with a further 3 in bottle, leaving the end product velvety, full bodied with rich secondary notes such as vanilla, tobacco as well as ripe cherries and strawberries. Perfect BBQ wine and if the Sun doesn't arrive great with a Roast.

It was a fabulous evening as well wine tasting we sampled some amazing organic Jamon, Spanish Cheeses and Olive Oil which they source from around their 5* Hacienda Hotels. Thank you very much United Wineries for giving such an insight into the Spanish wine production and introducing me to some gems!

Wine of the week - A Suave Soave

    AMY

    Soave du Lot Inama 2009

    £22

    Origin

Grown in the Veneto commune of Verona, Northeastern Italy, around the city of Verona. 'Classico' is made from grapes grown in the original areas and zones where Soave was initially planted. Inama's vineyards lie on basalt-rich soils in the heart of the Classico region.

    Taste

Intense wild camomile, elderflower, iris and perfumed herbs aromas along with subtle vanilla. Rich, almost sweet fruit on the palate, tempered and complemented by minerality and vibrant acidity.

    Enjoy

Fantastic drinking now, but will develop over the next four years. A perfect apéritif, the wine will match soft cheese or a Cobham favorite Barbecued Apple marinated Pork .

  • Marc

    Manager

Hello, I'm the new Manager here at Cobham, having worked previously across Surrey and London for Majestic. I agree with Robert Louis Stevenson "Wine is bottled poetry", I look forward to trying some "bottled poetry" with you on the tasting counter.

  • Jonny

    Assistant Manager

Hi I'm Jonny and I have just returned to Majestic in Cobham after being here when we initially opened in 2010. I'm a great fan of both food and wine and love creating those perfect dinner party matches. Give me a menu and price and I'll find the wine for you! My favourites at the moment include Californian Chardonnay and classic Red Burgundy. Pop in any time and I will help as much as I can!

  • Jamie

    Trainee Manager

Hi, I'm Jamie and I've been working for majestic since October 2009. My favourite wines tend to be reds from Australia, Spain and Argentina. My favourite wine is Muga's Prado Enea 2001 Gran Reserva. Please feel free to come and visit me in-store!

  • Amy

    Trainee Manager

I have just arrived in Cobham after 4 months working for Majestic. I have a keen interest in French wine, particularly Alsacian wine, thanks to my French Degree and also living in Alsace for a year. I now feel that I am ready for the 'New World' of wine that Cobham has to offer and look forward to sharing my latest discoveries with our customers!
