    Wines of Australia Tasting Week

Australian wine is not all about chunky Chardonnays and budget reds. This is a chance to pop in to the store and try some of our staff favourites!

Tom's Red wine of the week

    Tom

Lime Rock 'Kota' Pinot Noir 2008, Hawkes Bay

A small vineyard on the north-facing slopes of Waipawa, Hawkes Bay. Lime rock uses natural pest control so has been certified by the' Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand'

Forest floor and tea leaf characters give notes of plum, cherry and blackberry. Ripe juicy fruits, silky smooth tannins and long lingering finish.

Best served fillet mignon and porcini mushrooms.

Why not try it for yourself, it's open on our tasting counter all weekend!

Pedro's White Wine of the Week - King's Favour

    Pedro

King's Favour Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Marlborough

A step up from the everyday Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is by the producers of Majestic favourite 'the Ned'.

Showing an intense nose of citrus and passion fruit, the palate is reminiscent of a Sancerre, but with riper fruit character.

Drink this wine on its own or with goats' cheese salad.

    AWARD WINNER:
Marisco Vineyards won New Zealand Winery of the Year in the IWC in October 2011

Try it for yourself, it's open on our tasting counter all weekend!

Tom's Red wine of the week

    Tom

Wirra Wirra Church Block Cabernet, Shiraz, Merlot 2010 McLaren Vale

The late Greg Trott, winemaker at Wirra Wirra, named this wine after one of the original vineyard blocks from which the blend was made in 1972. Originally a Grenache and Shiraz blend, the wine has evolved over the years into this Cabernet-biased Aussie hybrid. This combines two of my greatest love's in wine; a big Mclaren vale red and a cabernet blend.

An aromatic nose, full of cedar, aniseed, clove and leaf notes. Bright plum, bramble and cherry fruit characterise the plush and juicy palate, supported by smooth-textured tannins.

Due the the cabernet dominance in this wine I would aim to pair this with Sesame Seared Duck served rare with a plum dressed oriental slaw.

Pedro's White Wine of the Week

    Pedro

    Albarino 2010, Martin Codax

Produced in North West Spain, in the area just above the border with Portugal called Galicia, Martin Codax produces a wine from the aromatic white Albarino grape variety.

Similar to the viognier in style, this wine exudes delicate peach and floral aromas with hints of herbs and spice. On the palate it is honeyed with fresh peach and stone fruit flavours busting through, and a long finish.

Enjoy this wine either on its own as an aperitif or partnered with fine fresh seafood.

Why not pop in and try it for yourself, it's open on our tasting counter all weekend!

£9.99 when you buy 2 or more.

Alex's Wine of the Weekend - Stella Alpina Pinot Grigio

    Alex

Stella Alpina Pinot Grigio 2011, Alto Adige

From the Alto Adige region in Northern Italy, this Pinot Grigio is a cut above the average.

Made from high quality fruit from some of the best sites, this is a world away from some of the neutral, everyday quaffing Pinot Grigios.

Showing a rich palate with pure and intense flavours of melon, peach and white flowers, this crisp white will match perfectly with tomato salads and white fish.

Try it for yourself, it's on our tasting counter this weekend!
