New Wine of the Week: Plaisir de Merle

    Freddie

As part of our Wine's of South Africa tasting week, our Wine of the Week this week is the excellent Plaisir de Merle Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Paarl. At £14.99 multibuy price, it is a great deal for a real top quality Cabernet Sauvignon.

Plaisir de Merle is a vine growing area established by French Huguenots in 1693, now covering nearly 1000 hectares, on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountains. The modern winery here was developed in the 1990s under the supervision of Paul Pontallier of Château Margaux.

The nose is a vibrant mix of red berries, earth and spicy vanilla notes. The palate is full-bodied and ripe, with a dark chocolate richness, and a more savoury, food-friendly spiciness on the finish. Pair with red meat and it will really shine. Try with venison burgers.

On our tasting counter now, so come and try it for yourself #comeandexplore

    New Freddie's Favourite

    Freddie

Fresh from the (Paul) Gasco(i)gne coast the 'Freddie's Favourite for this week is 'L'Instant Passion Sauvignon Blanc 2012 PGI Côtes de Gascogne. Cracking alternative to the Tropical fruit driven NZ Sauvignons as this offering has Passion Fruit and Pineapple very much at the fore. At £6.99 multibuy price you can't go wrong!

This wine comes from several selected vineyard sites across the Côtes de Gascogne, and is vinifed by Rigal, one of the region's most well-established producers, founded in 1755. The name refers to passion fruit, one of the noted characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc. An invitingly fresh nose of grapefruit, tinged with subtle grassy aromas and softer, more tropical fruit notes. Elegant and crisp, the palate is awash with refreshing citrus character.

It is on our tasting counter now, so come in and share your own opinions with us!

    New Freddie's Favourite!

    Freddie

For those of you loving a bargain the 'The Parcel Series Sémillon Sauvignon 2011 Margaret River' is my Favourite this week ,as, for £5.99 multibuy price you can't go far wrong with this offering from Australia.

A superb quality white blend from Margaret River, bottled exclusively for Majestic, and available at a staggeringly low price. From fruit sourced mainly from the cooler southern half of the region, fermented at cool temperatures and blended following three months on lees.

Explodes with citrus and tropical notes on the nose, with nuances of passionfruit and jasmine. Peachy on the palate, backed up by refreshing guava and grapefruit flavours and a subtle creaminess.

    New Freddie's Favourite!

    Freddie

It seems there might be a pattern emerging, as the second wine in a row to be granted the prestigious 'Freddie's Favourite' status is from Italy. The Morellino di Scansano 2011 Poggioargentiera at £8.99 on the multi buy offer is fantastic value for money and offers a fresh fruity, medium bodied red that still has a touch of rusticity about it ,which I feel, sets it apart from other reds of this style:

Made up of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo this wine comes from Scansano, in the southern part of Tuscany, Morellino is the local name for Sangiovese. In this case blended with 15% Ciliegiolo, another indigenous local grape, this is a slim and youthful style of red, with only a third of the blend spending 6-8 months in new oak.

A taste of ripe cherry and strawberry fruit forms the backbone of this wine, which is medium-bodied and approachable, and fresh in feel. A subtly rustic streak gives a touch of complexity and food friendliness. Partner with anything from lamb chops to game, either immediately or within the next 5 years.

Available to taste on our tasting counter now!

Ive seen vineyards in Mendoza by horse back.I've seen how they make the bubbles in Champagne.I've seen how the put the 'rock' in Rioja.I've even seen the clouds in Cloudy Bay. If you want to see me? I'm probably working today so come on down,I have lots of wine stories.

  • Will

    Assistant Manager

I have been with the company for around a year and a half. I have a real passion for almost all kinds of wine. Some of my favourite styles are Barolo, white Burgundy and Riesling of all kinds. Pop in and have a chat if you're in the mood to try something new!

  • Freddie

    Trainee Manager

I am new in the company after having started here at the beginning of November. After having lived in France for a year the wine industry called to me and here I am! So even though my collegues will have the more superior wine knowledge, I might just have the edge when it comes to their pronunciation.
