The town of Gavi lies in the Piemonte region of North-West Italy and the vineyards surrounding the town produce the Cortese grape. The grape appears to be indigenous to this region as it was first noted for its quality as far back as 1659!
Gavi has been referred to as the Chablis of Italy because of the refreshing, steely minerality and this particular wine is a Gavi di Gavi as the grapes come from vineyards closest to the town.
The grapes were harvested late and this gives a slightly honeyed edge to the wine, which is complemented wonderfully by the crisp acidity and ripe fruits, including hints of peach and pear.
This is a fabulous apéritif but also a great accompaniment to poached white fish, with a rocket and tomato salad.
