    Summer Tasting Review

    Marc

Last night saw our (first) annual tasting event in store. Over 40 people showed up to taste some of this summers most happening wines. The pick of the bunch had to be the new Ciaxas Albarino a fantastic wine for £7.99 and my personal favourite. A Sticky End Noble Rot Sauvignon Blanc from Marisco Vineyards also showed very well with a sweetness balanced with acidity that left you longing for more . The Stand Out Sparkler was Cloudy Bay Vintage for £16.99!... what a buy if you're into your rich toasty Champagne and Sparkling wines. As per usual on our wine evenings we converted a few people to Chardonnay with the Petaluma 2007 from Piccadilly Valley, South Australia. Many thanks to Jane Mohan from West Street Vineyard who brought along her excellent English wines produced near Coggeshall. Also to Oscar Harding from Duchess Oil who really impressed with his unique Rapeseed oil.

For any more information on the wines featured feel free to give us a call, email or tweet.

Wine of the Week - Gavi di Gavi, La Toledana

Wine of the Week - Gavi di Gavi, La Toledana

    Gavi 2011, La Toledana

    £9.99
or buy any 2 Italian wines and save 20%
    £7.99

The town of Gavi lies in the Piemonte region of North-West Italy and the vineyards surrounding the town produce the Cortese grape. The grape appears to be indigenous to this region as it was first noted for its quality as far back as 1659!

Gavi has been referred to as the Chablis of Italy because of the refreshing, steely minerality and this particular wine is a Gavi di Gavi as the grapes come from vineyards closest to the town.

The grapes were harvested late and this gives a slightly honeyed edge to the wine, which is complemented wonderfully by the crisp acidity and ripe fruits, including hints of peach and pear.

This is a fabulous apéritif but also a great accompaniment to poached white fish, with a rocket and tomato salad.

    Fine Wine of the Month

    Brunello di Montalcino Banfi 2007

This exceptional wine is made from Brunello which is a localised clone of the more well known Sangiovese grape one of the primary grape varieties for most 'super Tuscan' wines. The name 'Super Tuscan' is used to classify some of Tuscany's best red wines made from Sangiovese and sometimes with a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Castello Banfi are a family owned vineyard estate and winery considered to be amongst a few select producers of Brunello di Montalcino. Banfi still produce the wine in it's traditional style, requiring it to be firm and tannic yet have a full fruit driven palate allowing the wine to develop with up to 10 years of cellaring.
Great now but would be a very interesting reward should you manage to keep it for 5-10 years.

On Offer - £24 when you buy 2 or more.

    Wine of the Week choice-Godello

    Sam

The Valdeorras appellation is at the very easter edge of the Galicia Region in Northern Spain. It is gaining a growing reputation for the wines produced from the indigenous white grape, Godello. It is a difficult grape to grow as it is highly susceptible to disease but this area is protected from the Atlantic by a range of mountains, and the vines thrive on the rocky slate soils.

Godello can produce, if vinified carefully, a delightfully aromatic wine. This youthful, green-tinged wine has a clean herbaceous nose with pineapple and pear fruits. Light in body, it still has a gratifying, palate-coating texture and a refreshing finish.

It is the perfect accompaniment to Spanish seafood tapas dishes, such as grilled sardines or calamari.

Over the years I have enjoyed wines form all round the world old and new but there is something about Chardonnay I keep going back for. It's usually something French often from Burgundy. My passion for wine is still as strong as ever and I still have a lot to learn but I am always on the look out for something new and exciting.

  • Sam

    Assistant Manager

I joined Majestic in June 2010, working in the Bishop's Stortford store. I also worked in Cambridge before I moved here to Braintree. I have to admit I am a fan of the classic French regions, especially White Burgundy and Bordeaux and I'm also partial to a glass of Champagne. So rather expensive tastes!
