Ridge Vineyards have been the darlings of critical praise for decades. They were some of the first to champion old-vine Zinfandel, making it since 1964. And some of the vines behind this Zinfandel-dominated blend are over 130-years-old. Expect intense notes of black cherry, oak spice, cola, mint and blackcurrant. Our bins hold 18-24 bottles of wine or Champagne or 2-3 cases of lager when filled with ice and water. Drinks will be chilled in 30-45 minutes and will be kept cold for several hours, especially if kept in the shade.

I was lucky enough to visit the Ridge Wineyard in California and was treated to a tasting and lunch on the deck overlooking the valley. Geyserville is a real treat

Zinfandel has traditionally had something of an image problem. It's seen more as barbeque fare than something for a special occasion. But this blend - changing every year but here with Carignan and Petite Syrah - is a wonderful example of what can be achieved with old vines and a great winemaker. Delicious from the first drop, it might not be the most complex wine in the world, but if I had to drink one for the rest of my life it might well be this. It's an absolute barnstormer.

If you think Zinfandel is only capable of high-alcohol, jammy, fruit bomb wines (and there's nothing wrong with those!) then this may change that perception forever. There is a recent movement amongst some Californian wine makers - and lets face it Zinfandel is the only truly Californian grape - to stop treating it like Cabernet Sauvignon and start treating it more like Pinot Noir. The results of this approach has lead to greater complexity, increased subtlety, and better balanced wines. This wine shows restraint whilst still maintaining that Californian fruit character. Don't worry, you can still taste the sunshine in this. Cheap it's not, but it's a step up from the normal Zins you see from other warmer parts of California (like Lodi). If nothing else it's worth a try, just to experience a different kind of Zinfandel.
