Schloss Maissau, or Maissau castle, has a document dating from 1114 which refers to the ground’s vineyards. In more recent times, local winemaker Josef Schuster once again saw the site’s potential for making wine. In 1999, he fulfilled a childhood dream when he was able to lease these historic vineyards. He farms the ancient, mineral-rich soils organically and Austria’s star grape, Grüner Veltliner, takes centre stage. The dry climate allows grapes to ripen to perfection, producing wines full of fruity freshness. Quittengang is no exception. Juicy. Textured. Creamy. Expect notes of apple, mango, orange zest and honey blossom. A streak of minerality keeps it fresh. Grüner’s fruity flavour and classic kick of pepper pairs brilliantly with spicy dishes, so try this one’s creamy character with a Thai coconut curry.
