Domaine Rolet Arbois Chardonnay 2016, Jura

Domaine Rolet Arbois Chardonnay 2016, Jura

Rate this product
ABV 13.00%

Arbois is the most important region in Jura. In the foothills of the Alps, the harsh winters may put off many winemakers, but not Domaine Rolet. This estate handpicks its grapes from 30-year-old vines and ages this Chardonnay in oak. Expect notes of rich citrus, white flowers and a hint of oak influence in the supple texture and delicate nuttiness.

An exceptional Chardonnay, for me it was reminiscent of the best of New Zealand but at nearly half the price. Classy, poised with a long finish. This will be my go-to Chardonnay from now on.

It has a lovely golden colour in the glass. Medium intensity on the nose with hints of apple, pear, honey, vanilla and apricot. Peach, apple, honey, citrus and mineral flavours with a medium intensity.

Better than expected. Guy in the shop said it's a bit like a white Burgundy and I didn't believe him. On drinking I was pleasantly surprised. It is a bit like white Burgundy. And tastes better the day after too. I'd buy again.

A poised, beautifully made Chardonnay. The Jura specialist Wink Lorch writes of this cuvee that it 'seems best in less ripe years when the tangy fruit emerges'. This is precisely what has happened here. Although not an oxidative wine, a little air contact has made this more supple and expressive than most contemporary Burgundy. Indeed it tastes rather like a village Cote d'Or from the 1990s. Despite Majestic's description, the oak influence is discreet and supportive, not overwhelming. This will deepen and grow broader with age. (I recently drank a bottle of the 2010, which was superb). For now, chill it down to just below cellar temperature. If you decide to age it, serve it closer to room temperature. It's good value at £15 a bottle, especially given the ridiculous prices now asked for quite ordinary Burgundies. Unfortunately, Rolet sold their domaine in 2018, and the new owners are busily flogging off old stock, so this may be the last chance to buy an authentic wine from this source.
