Porta 6 - The wine that broke the net!Date published: 05/04/16

T'was a sunny summers afternoon and a popular chef by the name of James Martin on Saturday kitchen announced with great delight that the wine he was trying was "One of the nicest reds I've tasted in ten years on the show". That day erupted with sales, so much so our internet crashed. But more importantly the people that bought this came back again and again and again. At £7.49 it was a bargin.

This week until Monday we have it on sale at £6.49, our lowest ever and a brilliant deal. We also have it open to taste in store so if you're in doubt call in and make your own mind up!

Fine Wine Encounter eveningDate published: 24/02/16

Following the huge success of the December evening we are pleased and excited to announce our second fine wine evening here at the Nottingham store. Running on Friday 15th April from 7pm, this evening will be an opportunity for you (and us!) to explore the exciting world of some of our fine wines, many of which are never open on normal tastings so this is a real treat!

Tickets cost £20 per person, however you will receive a voucher for each ticket purchased giving you £20 to spend on fine wine in store.

During the evening we will discuss the reasons why these wines are classed as superior to others, why they cost more and also compare them to some of their less expensive varieties. We understand that sometimes the fine wine section in store can be a bit intimidating, but really all it is is some really good wine and many cost the same as what you would pay for a standard bottle in a pub!

The more tickets we sell the more wine we can open on the evening so please let your friends and family know about the event, so we can get a range of varieties from around the world. Please be aware that tickets must be purchased before the event and cannot be bought on the night.

BBC Saturday Kitchen RecommendationDate published: 16/01/16

Today on the BBC's Saturday kitchen wine expert Olly Smith has recommended the Waimea Estate Pinot Gris... and we have it open to try today!!

The same grape as Pinot Grigio, but this New Zealand offering is in a world of its own full of flavour and slightly off dry it will be ideal served with a good old curry.

Why not pop into store today to try it and see if you agree with the expert.

Bin End Bargains!!Date published: 15/01/16

Christmas and new year are over.... Welcome to the new and improved January sale!!! Forget searching through rails of clothes which we all know we will never really wear... come and buy some excellent quality wines which we are sure you will drink and love!!

Our bin end sale is in full flow here at Nottingham Majestic Wine, making way for some new, eagerly anticipated newbies we have a range of some old favourites reduced by 33% and once they are gone they are gone so hurry!!

With prices starting as low as £4.66, the choice ranges from sparkle, quality Bordeaux and bargain whites from New Zealand, France and Italy to name a few. In my opinion star buys are:

The Giesen Chardonnay £6.99, from Hawkes Bay New Zealand. This is a fresh and fruity white, easy drinking and ideal for parties, or as a cheeky mid-week tipple!

DB Pinot Noir £6.66, Sourced from Victoria in Australia where the slightly warmer temperature produces a soft but fleshy Pinot Noir, definitely fuller in body than many Pinots and bursting with real warm jammie red fruit. Ideal with white meats such as Chicken or Turkey. This is one of my favourite grape varieties and to me this is an excellent example of an Australian Pinot Noir at an amazing price!

Rustenberg Rousanne £10.66, Traditionally a grape variety grown in the south of France, this South African offering is a real treat. If you like creamy, richer styles of white then you will love this! A rich, full bodied white, bursting with Apricot and Peach. Definitely a wine to enjoy with food, especially creamy sauces and fish. This is a really unusual and unique style of white normally sold at a much higher price so a real treat to see it at such a competitive price.

Why not pop in and have a look what we have on offer and don't forget our wine advisors are always happy to tell you about our favourites!

No tricks, just treats!Date published: 30/10/15

This weekend with every purchase we will give you the chacne to win a bottle of wine through our lucky dip! Simple pull out a bottle top and if it has a cross on pick from our varied selection for your free bottle. Approx chance of winning 50% so why not come down and try your luck.

Rugby Result.....Date published: 04/10/15

What can we say......there is plenty of Australian Wine and Beer for sale in our store today!

This coming weekend.Date published: 30/09/15

This weekend we are really shifting into our Autumn Gear as Nottingham celebrates the historic Goose Fair.  That said, there is still a bit of the Indian Summer going on so we are focussing our tasting counter on the warmth of the Sud de France!  We start on Friday with a fine wine from the Languedoc - Gerard Bertrand's Grand Vin La Sauvageonne - an absolute delight.  Accompanying this magnificent Syrah and Grenache blend will be a fantastic St Chinian from Chateau La Dournie.  On the white side there will be a marvellous Picpoul de Pinet and La Grand Heron from Gascony.  Completing the line up will be two more reds, including our new Definition label Claret from Montagne St Emilion, and one more white; the Cup and Rings Albarino from Galicia in sunny Spain.  Furthermore, on Saturday we are opening a bottle of Duval Leroy Brut NV Champagne!  I think you will agree that this is a fabulous combination of wines and we look forward to welcoming you in store.

Buyers choice - Montepulciano D'abruzzo, Masciarelli (Italy)Date published: 25/09/15

Montepulciano D'abruzzo is one of Italy's most famous wines, from a stunning region full of mountains and protected as an area of outstanding beauty.

This wine is from the Masciarelli winery, a successful family run winery founded in 1978.

A bright ruby colour, the wine is full of dark fruit and a sweet spice. A real all rounder with a velvety finish which will go well with most foods, but is particularly excellent when served with traditional Italian cuisine.

Open to taste now on our tasting counter.

Fabulous Bin End Rioja!Date published: 15/09/15

Currently at Majestic we have our bin end sale underway, as we clear out some of our existing lines to make room for new and exciting stock. As a result, all of our bin end wines without exception are reduced by 33%, which means that you can pick up some seriously good wines at surprisingly low prices!

One of the wines that I am particularly sorry to see go is the Marqués de la Concordia Crianza Rioja, which is a fabulous example of a younger Rioja at the crazily low price of £6.99/bottle!

Made from 100% Tempranillo and aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels, the Marqués de la Concordia Crianza really is a wine that punches well above its weight. With heady aromas of red and black fruits on the nose, the palate is awash with strawberry, blackcurrant and cedar spice notes. Medium bodied and lingering on the palate, this would be the perfect wine for roast lamb.

Currently reduced from £10.49 to £6.99, the Marqués de la Concordia Crianza Rioja is just one example of the great value bin end wines you can currently find at your local Majestic. Don't wait too long though- once they're gone, they're gone!

Bin End SalesDate published: 14/09/15

Our Bin End sale continues.  We have some fantastic bargains for sale; Claret, Ribera del Duero and Gran Reserva Rioja, all at 33% off.  Come on down and try some on our tasting counter.

Fall in love with France!Date published: 24/06/15

These French gems will be open to taste over the weekend.

Duc de Belmont Côteaux Bourguignons 2011

Côteaux Bourguignons is a modern appellation established in 2011, covering both red and white wines sourced anywhere in the 'Burgundy Hills' but falling outside of the classic appellations, from around Chablis in the north to Beaujolais in the south.

A light-to-medium-bodied red wine, crammed with vivid flavours of ripe redcurrant, blackberry and raspberry, all framed by rounded tannins and gentle perfumed notes.

Ideal foil for simple grilled meat dishes.

Château La Sauvageonne Rosé 2014 Côteaux du Languedoc

La Sauvageonne is a legendary estate located in the north of Hérault. For a hot region it enjoys a unique micro-climate with remarkably cool nights, allowing slow grape ripening. A small proportion of this rosé has been barrel-aged for added texture and complexity.

An involvingly aromatic rosé with a nose of redcurrant and blackcurrant fruit, subtle hints of violet and rose petal, and undertones of vanilla and gingerbread. Soft and velvety smooth mouth-feel.

Serve lightly chilled with charcuterie, pâtés and other hors d'ouvres.

Beer of the Week: LagunitasDate published: 17/06/15

Beer of the Week: Lagunitas

Lagunitas India Pale Ale, 6.2%

Success In the USA

Lagunitas is one of the top 10 selling craft beers in the USA. Originally created in Lagunitas, California in 1993, the company moved to bigger premises in Petaluma, California the following year.

With demand and interest on the East Coast growing, Tony Magee opened a second brewery in Chicago in April 2014.

The new Chicago brewery has a 600,000 barrel capacity and now has an on-premise taproom.

Why should you buy this beer...

The beer itself is made with 43 different hops and 65 various malts.

It is light amber in colour with a frothy white head. It smells light and citrusy with a hint of pine. The smells and flavours are very similar and it’s surprisingly light, given the number of hops used within the brewing process. It is very smooth with only a hint of bitterness on the finish.

The Lagunitas Brewing Company recommend drinking it on its own or with a mild blue cheese!

Wine of the Week: El Viajero Sauvignon Blanc, Chile £6.66Date published: 17/06/15

Wine of the Week: El Viajero Sauvignon Blanc, Chile £6.66

El Viajero Sauvignon Blanc, Leyda Valley, Chile

Cool Sauvignon Blanc

The Leyda Valley is approximately half way down the country of Chile, to the south and west of Santiago.

The vineyards are situated only 10 miles from the coast, meaning that the influence of the Pacific Ocean is very important to the region. The ocean helps moderate the temperatures, meaning that the winters are mild and the summers are warm rather than hot.

This creates a cool climate for grape growing, and one grape that can produce fantastic wine in these conditions is Sauvignon Blanc.

Should I compare thee to a Loire or a Kiwi?

The Loire style of Sauvignon tends to be restrained, with subtle flavours of citrus, with some peachy or apricot flavours. The soft ripe flavours and sharp acidity make them great wines to drink with food.

New Zealand wines tend to be bigger and bolder with citrus flavours and gooseberry being prominent.

This cool climate Chilean wine falls somewhere between the two. The flavours are more obvious than that of a Loire wine, yet not as powerful as some from New Zealand.

Why should you buy this wine...?

If this wine were from the Loire it would be twice the price. The last few years have also seen a rise in price of New Zealand Sauvignon, so if you are looking for a quality, value Sauvignon Blanc, Chile is the place to look - and you need look no further - you’ve found it!

Marvellous Malbec!Date published: 29/05/15

Hello Majestic fans, today I wish to talk to you about something currently on our tasting counter- an Argentinian Malbec. 'Hey Malbec!' sports a particularly eye-catching label. It's cartoon in design but I must say the wine itself belies its light-hearted label. It's has distinct flavour, one which stays on the tongue and the mind long after the last sip has been imbibed. It has hints of black pepper with a refreshing, almost cleansing, taste. The aforementioned taste is balanced well with an undercurrent of black fruits. It seems only fitting that Argentina's gastronomic speciality, that of steak, goes particularly nicely with this wine. Its mild spice and refreshing flavour would only be enhanced by a fantastically prepared steak- perhaps outside, weather permitting!

Brad and Angelina's wine on it's way to Majestic NottighamDate published: 11/04/15

Brad and Angelina's wine on it's way to Majestic Nottingham

The wine that is made on the estate owned by Brad and Angelina, Miraval, in the beautiful Provence region is on it's way to your local Majestic wine. I can promise you that this is a GREAT wine, it is not a celebrity endorsed fad, it is a superbly made Provence Rose that many are saying is one of the best out there!

We are selling this at £17.99 a bottle and will have good stocks all Summer, and even more exciting we will be stocking the magnums! These are £38 and make a fantastic centre piece to any BBQ or dinner party.

I personally enjoy drinking Provence Rose in the Summer (sometimes the Winter as well!) and think it is a great wine to enjoy with food, especially slightly spiced dishes such as chilli and king prawn linguine, pad Thai or a paella. It stands up really well to a little spice and comes alive!

It's Here - The Craft Beer Revolution!Date published: 18/06/14

It's Here - The Craft Beer Revolution!

Gone are the days of boring beer. Walk into any pub, bar or restaurant and you can get so more than just a carling on draught! Micro-breweries are popping up everywhere and why not - there is so much variation with the humble hop and barley that there is ample opportunity to carve a little niche in a rapidly expanding market.

We like to think that, at Majestic, we have spent our time searching, researching and of course, tasting our way around as many craft breweries as possible. We have some great beers and our range is expanding every day. And, whats more, if you buy any two of our craft ales, you save £6!!

Here are just a few beers that you must try this summer. Don't ask questions, just trust us!

Einstok Icelandic White Ale - £9.99

From the north of Iceland, this is modelled on the traditional Belgian witbier. Infused with coriander and orange peel, this is a zesty little thing. It maintains a fine balance between full bodied and light and, ultimately, is incredibly refreshing after a long day at work!

Punk IPA - £9.99

The growing empire of Scottish company Brewdog is a testament to their skill and dedication in making fine beer. Punk IPA is a light, golden beer with plenty of tropical fruits and a hit of refreshing citrus.

Brooklyn Summer Ale - £9.99

From the guys at Brooklyn comes a slightly lighter, fresher beer. Light enough for lager lovers and meaty enough for ale lovers, this is the perfect blend! Crisp and clean, this is those who enjoy a flavoursome tipple

Help; my wine is corked!Date published: 26/05/14

Unfortunately, cork taint is an inevitable problem when sealing wine with natural cork. Here at Majestic, however, we feel it shouldn't cause you any hassle!

It's as easy as pie for us to replace; either we can credit the value of the bottle against your next order, or we can do a simple swap and change for you.

If ordering online or over the phone, be sure to put a note in the delivery instructions space to say that you have a bottle you'd like to return due to it being corked or just mention it to us when ordering over the phone. We can then arrange to collect and replace the offending bottle when delivering.

If you prefer to see our smiling faces in store, you can return the bottle to us here and we can exchange it!

All we ask that you keep the bottle and some of the wine inside, so that we can record the nature of the fault and helping to assist our suppliers in their quality control.

Why doesn't wine taste like grapes?!Date published: 10/03/14

It is a little ironic that wine is made entirely from grapes and yet if you have a glass, it rarely tastes like grapes. In fact, it can taste of almost anything, from pineapple to lemon (for white wine), from plum, to leather (in the case of red wine).

Some people even think that small amounts of these fruits are added to wine to change the flavour, but it is in fact the extremely complex process of wine-making which actually changes the chemical compounds found in the grapes so that they resemble those found in other fruits.

Almost every step of the wine-making process can change the flavour and body of the wine, for example the can undergo Malalactic Fermentation, which changes the harsh Malic Acid (acid found in apples, lemons etc) into Lactic Acid (acids found in dairy). New World Chardonnay often undergoes this process to turn an appley, citrusy wine into a creamy, buttery wine.

If you would like to know more about these processes, simply ask a member of staff next time you are in store and they will be happy to go into more detail.
