Like another world-renowned brand we could mention, Villa Maria was founded in a garage. George Fistonich’s garage in an Auckland suburb, to be precise. He's now ‘Sir George’, and his backyard experiment is the most awarded winery in New Zealand. Of course, it’s mainly known for its benchmark Sauvignons – and the Cellar Selection is particularly special. Think gooseberry and passionfruit with the zing of grapefruit. The grapes are even harvested in the cool of the night to make sure as many aromas as possible are preserved. If you love Kiwi Sauvignon this is a no-brainer upgrade – it’s got all the flavour dials turned way up.The Cellar Selection wines were created expressly for food. Kiwis love Asian-inspired foods, so this Sauvignon is extra aromatic which works really well with spice.
Murray Barlow's wines are some of Stellenbosch’s finest. He's rightfully won not just a cult following, but heaps of critical praise. In fact, he is the only winemaker to win Young Winemaker of the Year twice at South Africa’s biggest wine-awards event, Diners Club. He's excelled yet again with this Stellenbosch Sauvignon. It's fresh and crisp, with notes of melon, gooseberry, pineapple and passionfruit. Try it with Thai food.
Thierry Delaunay, one of the leading wineries of the Touraine region, ages this deliciously dry Sauvignon Blanc on character-building lees. This results in a textured palate of citrus and fresh-cut grass.
Chile's Leyda Valley is a region on the up. Its cooler, Pacific climate is ideal for Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Luis Felipe Edwards' vineyards are some of the closest to the sea in the valley. And the man making this wine on them, Nicolas Bizzarri, earned his stripes at the prestigious Robert Mondavi winery in California. This is a juicy, tropical Sauvignon, with notes of pineapple, passionfruit and lemon. Simply excellent with fish.
