Treasury Parcel wines are going quick... don't miss out!Date published: 14/10/16
Earlier this year we secured a parcel of Australian and Californian wines from one of our suppliers. We sold through this in record time. Our buyers have worked their magic again and have secured a further collection of their wines at silly prices.
There are some bargain prices on Aussie wines, from Lindeman's, Wolf Blass and Seppelt ranging from £4.49 to £9.99. These wines are priced way, way below market prices, sometimes more than 50% below, once they’re gone, they’re gone!
Currently we only have just over 100 bottles left across the range so hurry down to see us to get a chance to pick up your bargain this weekend.
Team Bedford's favourite has to be the Lindeman's Regional Shiraz £7.49 mix 6 price (Single bottle price 11.99)
This shiraz was a gold medal winner in 2015, bursting with raspberry and cherry notes and a touch of pepper. This leads to a balanced finish with suprising length. This is an absolute steal, especially on the mix 6 price... a saving of £4.50 a bottle!
Come in to see us to have a taste of some of these fantastic value wines or give us a call/email if you can't get down to see us to secure your wines before they run out!
Silent Pool Gin- New ArrivalDate published: 06/07/16
We are huge fans of one of our newest gins the Silent Pool. Here's a little write up from our newest team member Jude!
Silent Pool Gin Mix 6 price £36
single bottle £40
Recently featured in Landscape magazine, the Silent Pool distillery raises the bar by bringing historical myths, the local environment, and carefully selected recipes all together in its Silent Pool gin. The distillery is located on the site of the Silent Pool in Albury Forest, Surrey. The lakes' surface reflects back the surrounding trees and is the site of a 13th century legend which is reflected in the bottle of the Silent Pool gin. In the legend, a young girl was bathing in the pool when she heard a horse rider approaching the lake. In order to protect her modesty, she moved further into the lake and drowned. The girl's ghost now haunts the pool at night: a pale figure rising up from the water, crying desperately for help in the moonlight. The natural spring water used in the gin comes from the Pool itself - and is the inspiration for the blue coloured gin bottle. The copper filigree design is a nod to the copper still which produces the gin, as well as depicting the drowned girl's story and the gin's 24 different botanicals, which are also locally sourced (if possible). The owner, Ian McCulloch, was also inspired by the heritage of the once-abundant juniper trees that grew in Surrey. As a result, the gin is 'complex and juniper-led' with botanicals such as kaffir lime, lavender, elderflower, rose and bergamot amongst others. A vintage steam boiler loaded with beech and oak wood powers the copper still, and visitors are invited in to watch the process of making the gin itself. - Summarised from article by Emma Pritchard, Landscape Magazine

New team at BedfordDate published: 11/06/16
My name is Chris, I am the new trainee manager at Bedford. I tend to prefer full bodied red wines, particularly those from France, but on a hot summers day nothing beats a dry Provence rosé. And I'll take any excuse to drink all kinds of sparkling wine, with Nyetimber Demi-Sec and Rosé being my favourites. Outside wine, I love a good glass of whisky or, better yet, calvados!
Hi my name is Helen and I'm the new manager here at the Bedford store. I am a huge fan of White Burgundy and aged Rioja so if you are after a Fine Wine reccommendation or for something special for a sunday roast then I am your girl! Along with the rest of the UK I have really got into my G&T's especially anything unusual....have you tried our Warner Edwards Rhubarb Gin, delicious! It would be fantastic to meet all our lovely customers to have a chat about some of your favourites!

Happy Easter! Perfect wine to match chocolate!Date published: 26/03/16
Fancy a wine that goes with your choccy egg? Try one of these bad boys.
The Chocolate Block Mix 6 £22
An earthy, rustic nose gives up aromas of leather, earth and spices over a backdrop of blackcurrant and ripe raspberry fruit. Harmonious and powerful on the palate, with a cocoa and pepper complexity.
Chapel Down English Rose Mix 6 £20.99
Slight hints of rose petals and a soft strawberry character, this crisp, medium bodied sparkling wine also has a citrus streak and fine, persistent bubbles.
Or why not really treat your self...
Penfolds Grange Mix 6 £378
Penfolds Grange is comprised of 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon coming predominately from Barossa vineyards with smaller proportions from Magill Estate and McLaren Vale. It was matured for 21 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Very deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is intensely scented of vibrant blueberry preserve, mulberry and kirsch aromas over hints of cedar, mocha, vanilla and anise. The full bodied palate is richly fruited with pure black berry and baking spice flavors offset by crisp acidity and a firm level of velvety tannins, finishing long. This is quite an opulent, forward Grange, which is very tempting to drink now, though of course will reward at least 5-10 years of cellaring and should keep to 2030.

Fresh from the brewery (literally, I was on the phone at about midday and by 3pm a pick-up truck was here with a pallet of beer on the back!), in Milton Keynes comes the rather sensational MK IPA.
I've always struggled to find a hoppy beer that lasts in a good way but tastes lovely and clean, as well as being strong enough to give a good kick, but not so much so that I'm falling over after half a can - THIS is a beer that gets it right on all fronts.
Full of New-World hops for exciting tropical flavours and English malt for a solid backbone, it's a beautifully refreshing drop.

Conde de Valdemar Rioja Gran Reserva 1998 Magnum (£13.32)
This falls firmly into the "no-brainer" / "you'd be mad not to" end of the wine-buying spectrum. Mature, dried fruit, powerful tannin and hints of vanilla. It's a wine that is very much still developing and will only get better with further age, though it's decidedly scrumptious already with shin of beef or some good roast lamb.
Bourgogne Chardonnay 2012 Olivier Leflaive (£11.99)
It's rarely possible to find White Burgundy of this quality sneaking much under the £15 mark, so this example from top negociant Olivier Leflaive is one to stock up on. Lovely soft texture with signature aromas of white peach and subtle creaminess.
Basedows of Barossa Shiraz 2012 Barossa Valley (£6.66)
A brilliant example of why wine shipped in bulk to be bottled in the UK can lead to some of the highest quality bargains around. This has all the hallmarks of good Barossa - a deep but fresh plum fruit core with touches of cocoa, sweet spice and pepper - and positively demands to be drunk with a chargrilled steak.
Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva 2011 Frescobaldi (£12.66)
Top-notch Chianti from a historic family producer. Real structure and depth are what sets a decent Chianti apart, and this has both in bucketloads. Think black cherries and sweet spice.
Matua Sauvignon Blanc 2013/14 Marlborough (£6.66)
A quality example of Britain's favourite wine style at a bargain price. Made by one of the oldest Marlborough producers, it has all the grapefruit, gooseberry and bell-pepper flavours that define great New Zealand Sauvignon.

My top 5 wines in store at the momentDate published: 15/08/15
I'm going to be self indulgent in this article and list my 5 favorite wines we have in Bedford at the moment (in no particular order)
5) Chapel Down English Rose.Dry and refreshing, and packed with English summer fruit character. Strawberry and redcurrant characters take centre stage, with crispy acidity providing a mouth-watering lift. £9.99
4) Macon-Verzé. Fermented in steel except for 10% of the blend which is fermented in oak, this is a crisp and fruity Chardonnay with very subtle suggestions of nutty oak influence and an enduring minerality. £9.99
3) Crozes-Hermitage 2012 Cave de Tain L’Hermitage. This wine offers seductive plum-rich fruit with a twist of smoky spice on the finish. Mix and match 25% 8.99
2) Nicolas Feuillatte 2006 Champagne. Nicolas Feuillatte's vintage cuvée combines freshness with a subtle yeastiness from extended ageing on the lees. Great as a party wine, or as a match with antipasto and cured meats. Stunning value on mix and match 33% £19.99
1) Muscadet 2010 Le Pallet. A unique style that shows plenty of evolved characteristics, including subtle nut, brioche and caramelised pear aromas that mingle with Muscadet's typical citrus and mineral backbone. Mix and match 33% £9.99
Come in and try. I staker my reputation on it!
New In: Dominio de Morfeo 2010Date published: 14/08/15
Everyone loves a classic brilliant value parcel from Majestic, and this fits the bill perfectly. Originally three separate wines destined to become a top-of-the-range series, circumstances have led to the three wines being blended and sold at a much lower price than originally intended. Therefore this is another of those "£20 wine for £6.66" situations that it would be mad not to take advantage of!
Brimming with the black cherry and plum fruit typical of mature vines, with good acidity and well-integrated tannins to hold everything together, this is a true bargain but stocks are limited and it won't be seen again, so get your order in now!
Why You Simply MUST Try A Southern French Wine TodayDate published: 13/08/15
Most of us associate the South of France with sun, sea, and glorious countryside, but we're more interested in the terrific wine produced in the area.
Wines from the vast region of Languedoc-Roussillon (you'll most likely spot something like "AOC Languedoc" on the label, or one of the myriad of smaller appellations contained within its borders such as "Limoux" or "Minervois") are wonderfully varied and often of comparatively brilliant value when paired up against their big-name cousins.
Try some of the below to get an idea of how the Languedoc could change your wine-drinking world:
Like White Burgundy? Try "L'Etoile de Begude Chardonnay 2013 Limoux" £13.49 a bottle*
A stunner of a Chardonnay from one of our favourite producers, Domaine Begude. Like bottled peaches and cream with a touch of vanilla essence, truly gorgeous.
Like Sauvignon Blanc? Try "Villemarin Picpoul de Pinet 2014 Côteaux du Languedoc" £6.74 a bottle*
Picpoul has risen greatly in popularity as a wine grape in its own right, but many are still to discover its lovely fresh citrussy and acidic bite that couldn't be more suited to seafood.
Like Big Rhône Reds? Try "Château Laville Bertrou 2012 Minervois-la-Livinière, Gérard Bertrand" £11.24 a bottle*
A massively concentrated, powerful and structured wine with the pepper and heart to take on the richest of casseroles, or a good vintage cheddar.
Like Soft Pinot Noirs? Try "Domaine Ferrandière Pinot Noir 2013 PGI Pays d'Oc" £7.99 a bottle
Silky smooth and bursting with ripe red fruit, with a touch of sweet spice from a short time in oak barrels - positively made for Coq au Vin.

Sparkling Saturday - Codorniu RaventosDate published: 08/08/15
Codorníu Selección Raventós NV, Spain
Cava is a sparkling wine from Spain. The rules for the production of Cava are very similar to those of Champagne. The major difference between the two (apart from their country of origin) is that Cava can be made from local Spanish grapes, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (the three major grapes of Champagne). In comparison to Prosecco, Cava generally has longer lasting bubbles and is richer in style due to the use of Champagne production methods. This is a modern example, from the Catalan region of Spain.
The Codorníu family have been pioneers in the region since first producing Cava in 1872. With a lovely smooth mousse (the bubbles) this wine has fresh citrus, peach and lemon aromas, vibrant fruit flavours and a certain creaminess to the finish. It’s full bodied as far as cavas go. A staff favourite due to its excellent quality and value; great if you want some budget bubbles without going down the Prosecco route!

5 Fine Wines for a Finer BarbecueDate published: 01/08/15
All too often the wine takes a back seat at barbecues, with people happy to plump for any old swill with the focus being on those juicy steaks and perfectly charred burgers. Plus with all those big flavours, it's easy to imagine that a truly decent wine would just be wasted. But think again! Match big flavours in the food with big flavours in the wine, and you can't go wrong. Here are our top suggestions:
1. Bollinger Special Cuvée NV Champagne (£29.98 a bottle on the 33% off selection)
Nothing says "posh barbecue" better than starting out with a glass of delicious, yeasty, biscuity Bolly, especially at this spectacular price.
2. Cloudy Bay Te Koko 2011 Marlborough (£32.50 a bottle when you mix and match any 2 fine wines)
A deep, luxurious, wild Sauvignon with great texture and bold flavours of blackcurrants and almonds. This has enough whack to grab everyone's attention as an aperitif and make the point that tonight's wine is worth paying attention to.
3. Saintsbury Chardonnay 2012 Carneros (£17.50 a bottle when you mix and match any 2 fine wines)
There's no better part of a barbecue than when juicy chicken on the bone makes its appearance, and to match up to the flavours involved go for a big, bold, complex Chardonnay like this one from Carneros (at the Southern end of the Napa Valley). Full of pears and apricots with a gorgeous creamy and nutty finish.
4. Barolo Natale Verga (£20 a bottle when you mix and match any 2 fine wines)
It takes mighty cuisine to stand up to the tannins in the mighty Barolo, and where better to get such food than your upmarket barbecue?! Granted, you may not appreciate all of the wine's endless subtle nuances in such a setting, but the smoky note will work beautifully.
5. Rioja Reserva 2011 Muga
Rioja might seem an unusual choice for a barbecue as it doesn't tend to have the body to stand up to such hearty food, however this beautiful, rich and complex example works perfectly with all manner of beefy delights.

Sparkling Saturday - Codorniu BrutDate published: 01/08/15
Codorníu Brut NV, Spain Cava
Cava is a sparkling wine from Spain. The rules for the production of Cava are very similar to those of Champagne.
The major difference between the two (apart from their country of origin) is that Cava can be made from local Spanish grapes, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (the three major grapes of Champagne).
This example, from the Penedès region in Catalonia, is made from local Spanish grapes; Macabeo, Parellada and Xarello. They’ve been blended to produce a dry, easy drinking, lightbodied Cava displaying green apple, citrus, almond and brioche characters.
It’s perfect if you’re looking for some budget bubbles without going down the Prosecco route! In comparison to Prosecco, Cava generally has longer lasting bubbles and is richer in style due to the use of Champagne production methods.

This weekend we have not one but two stunning sparkling wines from New Zealand for you to try!
Oyster Bay Brut
Made from 100% Chardonnay, this sparkling wine is made in the image of a 'blanc de blancs' Champagne, albeit with a more fruitdriven New World edge. This wine is elegantly styled yet intensely fruity, with zesty lime notes and white peach flavours. A great toast for any special occasion, or serve with fresh seafood dishes.

Oyster Bay Rosé
Made from 80% Chardonnay from Hawke's Bay and 20% Pinot Noir from Marlborough, this is Oyster Bay's take on a pink Champagne. You’ll find it has a more youthful style than many Champagnes. This wine exhibits a typically Kiwi intensity of flavour, with cherry and strawberry fragrances taking centre stage. The bubbles are fine and persistent, providing a long, crisp and refreshing finish. Serve at any celebration, alongside a selection of seafood hors d'oeuvres. Our online customers gave this wine a 4 out of 5 star rating! £14.99 buy 2 save 33% = £9.99

What are Bedfordians drinking this month!Date published: 17/07/15
What are the lovely people of Bedford drinking this month. Here are the top 5!
5) Rioja Reserva 2010 Marqués de Riscal - A classic Rioja Reserva. Full bodied and muscular, yet smoothly polished and embellished with complex aromas of vanilla and toasted oak, combined with summer fruit flavours.
4) Santa Ana Malbec 2014 Mendoza - Lively ruby colour with the violet hues that typify this grape. Plum and cherry characters predominate on both nose and palate. Medium-bodied, with supple tannins and a pleasantly soft finish.

2) The Ned Waihopai River Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Marlborough - A nose of nettles and grass leads to generous gooseberry flavours with a smoky herbal twist on the palate. The stony terroir gives the wine a subtle gunflint minerality which delivers extra complexity.
and at number 1!
Marlborough Ridge Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Giesen - Typically vibrant, citrussy and herbal Marlborough Sauvignon, with kaffir lime and blackcurrant leaf notes against a backdrop of grapefruit and tropical fruit flavours. Dry and mouthwatering.
Maybe it we should rename Bedford, Marlborough!

Sparkling Saturday - Codorniu Cristina Date published: 11/07/15
Codorniu Cristina 2012
This Cava was launched in honour of the Regent Queen María Cristina of Austria who in 1897 granted Codorníu with the title of “Official Provider of the Royal House”!
Why should I buy this wine...?
This is an award winning cava from the famous Codorniu bodegas, achieving Bronze medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards and International Wine Challenge in 2015.
**Our own online customers scored this 4 out of 5 stars**
Unusually this cava is made from 100% Pinot Noir; this gives the wine it’s lovely red berry flavours and finesse.
What does it taste like...?
This cava has lovely refined bubbles and is deliciously dry. It has fresh, light, floral aromas with delicately rounded, well balanced pear and brioche flavours alongside notes of strawberry and raspberry.

Wine of the Week - Paso Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, Paso RoblesDate published: 09/07/15
Concentrated blackcurrant from California
Paso Robles lies between Santa Barbara and San Francisco and lays claim to the widest temperature swings of any grape growing region in California. This range results in vines producing small clusters of tiny berries and rich, concentrated wines as a result.
So tell me about this wine...
I you associate Cabernet Sauvignon with those rather austere French examples then you will be pleasantly surprised by this Californian example. The warmer climate results in much fruitier Cabernets without all that green quality of France.
Why you should buy this wine…
If you like big, rich, smooth Cabernet Sauvignons then this is the wine for you. The aforementioned temperature range of Paso Robles really does result in super concentrated wine that will match big, meaty dishes.

Spotlight on the USA - White Knight ViognierDate published: 03/07/15
Our Spotlight on the USA Tasting Week has begun and we are very impressed with the new additions to the range hand picked by our buyer, so we though we would enlighten you all about them.
Starting with the White Knight Viognier. This has very quickly become a favourite with all of the team at Majestic Bedford.
The Sebastiani Family have been making wine in California since 1895, and were one of only seven wineries in the state permitted to continue to the production of wine (for purely medicinal purposes, of course) during the prohibition era, which devastated the vast majority of the US wine industry in the early 20th century. The majority of the family company was sold off in 2008, but one family member, August, has continued to make and sell wine with his new company The Other Guys (TOG).
TOG wines are all about quality fruit, and the Viognier grapes used for White knight are sources from deep sandy loam and clay soils of Clarksburg. They use very low-intervention winemaking techniques, with only a hint of French oak to allow the quality of the grapes to shine through.
On the nose are full aromas of peach, and to us peach yogurt, and honey. These continue on to the palate where flavours of apple and honeysuckle join the peacheyness.
Great on it's own, why not try with some classic cheese and tomato pizza?

IPA. A wonderful modern take on an old classic.Date published: 19/06/15
IPA is seeing a resurgence in recent years thanks to many cracking craft ales, many from the USA. Here are 3 of my current favorite. Perfect in the garden after a hard week at work.
Goose Island IPA 6x355ml Bottles: £13.99 or 2 cases for £10.99 each. From Chicago's craft brewery Goose Island, comes this India Pale Ale. It recalls a time when ales shipped from England to India were highly hopped to preserve their distinct taste during the long journey. The result is a hop lovers dream with a fruity aroma, off set by a dry malt middle and long hop finish.
Hawthorn Pale Ale 6x330ml Bottles: £13.99 or 2 cases for £10.99 each. Hawthorn Pale Ale is a unique interpretation of this classic and popular style. It presents a rich and complex malt character, derived from a bold blend of five different types of grain. Lightly kilned, the use of our speciality malts gives this beer a deep golden colour. The malt character is wonderfully balanced by the inclusion of five complementary varieties of hops. Sourced from New Zealand, Southern England and the US Pacific Northwest , these fresh hops deliver a saporous fruit and spice flavour, whilst a generous addition of hops late in the boil presents a delightful floral and citrus aroma.
Flying Dog Easy IPA 6x330ml Bottles: £13.99 or 2 cases for £10.99 each. Aromas of grapefruit and subtle spice meld into lemon and pine hop notes balanced with crisp cracker malt. Pair this with tailgates, mowing the lawn, and anything else that calls for a light, yet flavourful, beer.

Whether you like lime, cucumber, raspberries or something more exotic in your G&T there's no getting away that a decent gin is the most important thing. Why not try one of these 3 amazing gins.
Bathtub Gin 70cl:
This gin is made in ultra-small batches of only 30-60 bottles at a time, and the length of the compounding period is controlled entirely by periodic sampling. The result is an extraordinary gin, lightly tinted by the botanicals, and with a flavour which is both bold, and perfumed all at once. Sure to be a hit with amateur and professional mixologists alike.
Langtons No.1 Lakeland Gin:
A celebration of the Lake District, Langtons use local ingredients where possible amongst their 11 botanicals, including Lake District Oak Bark. Fresh citrus characters dominate with a light touch of sweetness, followed by a smooth finish.

Wine of the Week - Ferrandière Riesling Pays D’OcDate published: 22/05/15
Ferrandière Riesling Pays D’Oc
Available to taste!
Riesling. A favourite amongst wine enthusiasts.
Riesling is not a grape variety that you’ll find on all restaurant
menus, but amongst wine enthusiast, including many Majestic
staff, Riesling is a favourite.
Riesling can be happily consumed as both a young fresh wine
or once it has spent a few years in bottle. As a young wine
Riesling tends to have aromas and flavours of citrus and
apricot. As a Riesling ages in bottle the fresh fruit softens and
can be replaced by honeyed flavours.
In style, Rieslings can range from dry and crisp to sweet and
luscious, which is maybe helps explain why wine lovers are fascinated by it.
Domaine De La Ferrandière
The Domaine was established in 1922 and is located in the
heart of the Pays D’Oc. The vineyards are situated on the site
of a maritime lagoon. In order to reduce the salt content of the
soil, which would be poisonous to the vines, the area is
deliberately flooded once a year.
Why should I buy it...?
This a great wine. Fresh with aromas and flavours of lemon and lime, the wine is crisp
and refreshing. It also has that lovely hint of minerality associated with quality Riesling.
Fantastic with grilled sardines!

Wine of the Week - Viña Mayu Dry Pedro XimenezDate published: 14/05/15
Viña Mayu Dry Pedro Ximenez
Available to taste!
Who’s Pedro Ximenez...?
It’s not a man, it’s a grape variety!
There are many theories about the origin of the name:
● A Spanish soldier named Pedro Ximen or a Catholic
Cardinal named Ximenès who originally transported the
grapes from the Canary Islands and Madeira to the
● The village of Jiménez in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where
the grapes may have derived from.

Wines of the Week - Bienbebido Pulpo y Bienbebido QuesoDate published: 08/05/15
Bienbebido Pulpo y Bienbebido Queso - Spain
Available to taste!
What is Bienbebido…
Bienbebido are a range of wines produced by our friends at Vintae. Bienbebido loosely translates as good drinking. The wines in this range are all about food and wine matching. The phrase on the bottle is “Come ------ y bebe vino” - “Eat ------ and drink wine”. Vintae have come up with a range of wines to match specific foods. Majestic is stocking pulpo (octopus) and queso (cheese).
Wine and food matching is something we love doing at Majestic. Customers regularly ask for advice for a wine to go with a particular dish. Vintae have taken this a step further. Their wish was to create a wine to match a specific food. Inspired by the Spanish Tapas culture, Vintae brought together oenologists, sommeliers, chefs and wine enthuiasts to define tastes and flavours of dishes. Armed with these findings Vintae experimented with different grapes, different regions and differing ways of ageing the wine to find the perfect match. The Bienbebido wines are the result!
Join in the fun...
These wines are all about enjoying wine and food. The fun and funky labels reflect the window displays often used on tapas bar windows throughout Spain.
Do you have a favourite? Tweet @majesticwine using #comepulpo or #comequeso. We’d also love to see photos of you enjoying the wine and sampling the food. We’ll award a case of the wine to the winner for our favourite tweet using one of these hashtags over the weekend,

Chilling Reds? Are you mad?Date published: 25/04/15
Often reds get ignored in the summer months for cool, refreshing whites however some reds positively sing when chilled down a few degrees when chilled in the fridge for 20 mins. The key is avoiding the heavy, tannic reds so I wouldn't recommend cooling a Cab Sav, Shiraz or Merlot. What we're looking for is light, juicy reds, those with low tannins, lots of red fruit and a nip of acidity at the end.
Beaujolais is the most obvious that springs to mind. A lightly chilled glass of Fleurie in the garden is one of life's great pleasures.
Pinot Noir from New Zealand is another which can handle a quick dip in the ice bucket. Those great rhubarb notes jumping out.
Tomato, basil and mozzarella salad on the decking? Try this juicy Bardolino at 18c.

Wine of the Week - Parrilla Malbec Date published: 19/04/15
Parrilla Malbec - Mendoza, Argentina
Available to taste!
Argentinian Malbec has been one of the most successful wines on the global market over the last few years.
In the 80s and 90s winemakers started to become aware of the potential to produce quality wines in Argentina. It was Malbec, already widely planted in Mendoza, that winemakers realised could be more than just a grape used in a blended wine.
With “savoir faire” from an influx of French and Spanish winemakers and local knowledge, Argentinian Malbec has established itself as a go to wine for great quality and value with a difference
Parrilla is an Argentinian word for a barbeque. These are not the types of barbeque that we tend to have in Britain. The grills can be anything up to 20ft in length and meat is cooked anywhere from 45 minutes to many hours. A parrilla tends to be a local event where the whole community comes together. The struck matches on the bottle are a reminder of the fires around which communities gather..
What makes this wine different...
Parrilla is designed to really highlight the quality of the Malbec grapes used to make the wine. The wine is aged for a relatively short period of time and only 30% of the grapes are aged in oak barrels. The purpose of which is to allow the fruitiness of the wine to shine through. This wine is smooth, soft and crammed full of plum and blackberry flavours.
Why buy this wine…
The wine was made specifically for and is exclusive to Majestic. The wine was designed to allow the drinker to fully appreciate the deep fruity flavour that is Malbec.

New in : Puligny-Montrachet ChanzyDate published: 13/04/15
If you are looking for a treat, a great new wine we have in might be just the ticket.
Puligny-Montrachet Chanzy is a lovely Burgundy and is currently £30.00 a bottle.
This young domaine was only founded in 1974 but now holds 32 hectares across the region. Vinification is traditional but using modern technology ensures that quality is maintained. The wine is aged for 10 months in oak barrels, 20% of which are new, plus 4 months in steel tanks before bottling. It is a small parcel of wine which has elegant aromas of blossom, citrus and toast and flavours of lemon, toast and almonds. The finish is long and defined and the acidity well balanced.
Glorious GodelloDate published: 12/04/15
Another great Spanish white grape variety is Godello which you can currently taste a type of as our wine of the week.
Godello is a white variety of wine grape grown in northwestern Spain, in particular in Galicia. The Gouveio found in northern Portugal is thought to be the same grape variety.
It has delicate citrus flavours alongside crunchy pear and melon flavours. Some have more floral notes alongside the green fruit.
Try some Godello with pan fried scallops or some garlic roast chicken.
Guide to Albarino Date published: 12/04/15
Continuing with our Spanish theme during our Spanish Tasting Week, here is a bit of information to digest about Albarino a great Spanish white variety.
Albarino is from Northern Spain and is full of peach and apricot flavours, alongside citrus notes and high acidity.
It was presumably brought to Iberia by Cluny monks in the twelfth century. Its name "Alba-Riño" means "the white wine from the Rhine" and it has locally been thought to be a Riesling clone originating from the Alsace region of France. It is also theorized that the grape is a close relative of the French grape Petit Manseng.
Albariño is actually the Galician name for the grape. In Portugal it is known as Alvarinho, and sometimes as Cainho Branco.
Try it with steamed cod or some roast chicken.
Sparkling Saturday - Prosecco PasquaDate published: 11/04/15

Light and floral, it is refreshing with pears notes and a good mousse.
Spanish Wine Week - in full swing!!Date published: 10/04/15
We are featuring our wines of Spain over the course of the next week upto Thursday 16th April. The reds of Rioja are a favourite but Spain also produces some great white wines made from indigenous grape varieties suchas Albarino, Godello and Macabeo.
The whites are fresh, crisp and fruity, can be enjoyed on their own or with foods suchas grilled fish and other Mediterranean cuisine. If you are planning a BBQ, the whites would make a great match.
The reds of Rioja speak for themselves but how about a red from Ribeira del Duero? Or from Bierzo? Just as full bodied but some of these reds are great value and are just as good as a Rioja.
Some of these wines are open for you to try on our tasting counter, so if you want to try something new or try an old friend, come and see us instore and see what Spain has to offer.
You may be pleasantly surprised!!

Wine of the Week - Caixas GodelloDate published: 09/04/15
Wine of the Week - Caixas Godello
Exclusive to Majestic…
The Caixas (pronounced ky-shash) Godello is only available at Majestic. The wine was created in partnership with the Martin Codax winery. Based in Galicia in the North West of Spain, Martin Codax is one of our key suppliers who give Majestic Staff the opportunity to experience work on the estate during vendange (harvest).
Once the decision was taken to make a wine exclusively for Majestic, we needed a name for it. Caixas are the plastic trays into which grapes are placed once picked and is one of the first words Majestic staff learn when they work at the winery.
The Godello grape and the wine…
Godello is a grape predominantly found in North West Spain and parts of Portugal. Previously it was only used as a constituent part of blends, but has come to be seen as a quality grape variety in its own right.
Our buyer Matt says: “Godello is a grape that I love and I was delighted when Martin Codax told me they would be thrilled to produce one exclusively for us. The wine has flavours of lemon, pear and melon. It feels full and rich in the mouth and finishes with a lovely refreshing citrusiness”
A great match for grilled fish.
Caixas Godello was one of the top three most popular wines bought and enjoyed by friends and family of Majestic staff over Christmas. You don’t get a better recommendation than that!

Rioja Fact SheetDate published: 08/04/15
Rioja is a type of wine produced in Spain in the Rioja region which lies to the North of the country. The area is subdivided into three regions - Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja. La Rioja Alavesa and la Rioja Alta, located closer to the mountains, are at slightly higher elevations and have a cooler climate. La Rioja Baja to the southeast is drier and warmer.
Rioja is made usually of the tempranillo grape although it can have grenache in the blend as well. Many of Rioja's vineyards are found along the Ebro valley between the towns of Haro and Alfaro.
There are three different classes of Rioja depending how long they have been aged in oak for. Crianza has a minimum of 12 months in oak and is the fruitest. Reserva has a minimum of 24 months and is usually a nice blend of fruit and spice. Gran Reserva has a minimum of 36 months and has the most spice and woody flavours.
We have a range of different Rioja's at Majestic so why not come and explore our range?

Wine of the Week - Casal de Ventozela Vinho VerdeDate published: 03/04/15
Casal de Ventozela Vinho Verde - Portugal
Available to taste!
Spring is in the air…
Spring has sprung! The daffodils and crocuses are out in force, the lambs are gambolling in the fields and the evenings are getting longer. Sadly it appears no one has told the weather it’s Spring, but c’est la vie!
As the seasons change from the cold of winter towards the warmth of summer, our drinking habits tend to turn towards a lighter style of wine. Therefore we’d like to introduce our new Casal de Ventozela Vinho Verde.
Why buy this wine…?
Vinho Verde is both a style of wine and a region. The range of wines that come from the region can differ considerably.
This example chosen by our Buyer, Holly, is made from one variety rather than a blend of anything up to the 19 varieties permitted in the region.
The wine offers lots of flavour and freshness at fantastic value. The Arinto grape variety gives flavours of peach, apricot and fresh citrus, it has a slight spritz (typical of Vinho Verde) which makes it a refreshing Aperitif, perfect for your summer BBQ’s!

#CabernetSauvignonDate published: 25/03/15
Cabernet Sauvignon – expressive individuality and plenty of tannin
As with other red wine grapes, Cabernet personality comes from its skins. The colour, flavours and tannins are extracted from the skins with fermentation followed by a period macerating between one to three weeks. The choices made about wood ageing have a very significant effect on the wine. The older barrels impart less oak flavours than newer ones, but also they permit wines to develop through slow oxidation. The size of the barrel is critical. Small ones increase the surface area where wood and wine come into contact. A large one will have a lesser flavour impact. Tannins can be maximised through letting the wine spend extended time on the skins, but also they can be minimised by fining or gentle filtration.
Cabernet’s bold personality demands attention and is not always easy to match with a meal. It can crush almost anything light and delicate, potentially spoiling many possibilities. Plenty of tannin combined with its higher alcohol content and a good amount of oak means that recipes must be selected carefully around the wine. Tannin needs a counterbalance (fat or protein) and the higher alcohol demands more ample food. That usually means choosing a dish with considerable character. Steaks, chops and other red meats are classic, especially when grilled. Also more pungent fowl, squab, pheasant or wild duck are also good matches, especially with dark mushroom, wine reduction or pepper sauces. Cabernet is best when served with cheeses that range from mild to moderate in flavour, which pair with the wine rather than compete with it. Cheeses such as Roquefort or Stilton do not always guarantee a success. Pasta dishes and risottos do not go well with Cabernet either as starch does not cut tannin although it has similar body and texture of Cabernet’s weight.
With a mature Cabernet, it’s best to keep the food simple and really allow the wine to show. Simple beef stew, pot roast or grilled veal or lamb chop frames well with a developed Cabernet. Not all Cabernet-based wines are big and tannic, so when opting for softer, lighter version there should be a lighter fowl on the menu such as chicken, quail or goose. The texture of fuller-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon demands thicker dishes such as rich stews, long-braised casseroles or tagines. Oaky character also goes well with cooking methods such as grilling, smoking or roasting.
Cabernet Sauvignon goes well:
With red meats. Older wine to accompany rarer cuts and youthful and juicer to go well with longer-cooked meats or stews.
With grilled foods. Grilling adds a bitter component to the food and creates a great stage for Cabernet’s tannins.
With bitter foods. From mustard greens to radicchio and endive.
With foods or treatments that pick up on the wine’s oak character. The incorporation of toasted or roasted nuts or a charred soy-honey glaze on meat will echo similar tastes in the wine.
With creamy, buttery or fat-laden dishes that coat the mouth with a light film of texture will be lovely with a chewy Cabernet.
With earthy and herbal elements. In particular, wines that stress similar flavours are complemented by fresh herbs and dark mushroom.
Cabernet sauvignon does not go well:
With delicate and subtle dishes. Its personality is just too bold.
With strong cheeses. The stronger the cheese the less successful the match.
With most fish.
With spicy-hot foods.

A little bit of knowledge on #Marlborough #NewZealandDate published: 24/03/15
At the northern tip of the south island, Marlborough has seen such feverish vine planting in recent years that it has pulled ahead of all the other regions to come to epitomize New Zealand wine. Roughly half of all the country's vineyards lie in this very particular corner of the wine world - quiet an achievement given that, apart from settle who planted vines at Meadowbank farm around 1873, the vine was unknown here until 1973, when Montana, the country's dominant wine producer, cautiously established a small commercial vineyard. Lack of irrigation caused teething problems but by 1980 the first release had been bottles and the special intensity of the Marlborough Sauvginon Blanc was too obvious to ignore. Such an exhilarating, easy-to-understand wine clearly had extraordinary potential, rapidly realized by, among others, David Hohnen of Cape Mentelle in Western Australia. In 1985 Cloudy Bay, whose name, evocative label, and smoky, almost chokingly pungent flavour have since been legendary. What makes Marlborough special as a wine region is its unusual combination of long days, cool nights, bright sunshine and, in good years, dryish autumns. In such relatively low temperatures grapes might have difficulty ripening wherever Autumn rains threatened, but her they can usually be left on the vine to benefit from a particularly long ripening period, building high sugars without, thanks to the cool nights sacrificing the acidity that delineates New Zealand's wine.
The Story of Samuel Adams Boston LagerDate published: 23/03/15
The Story of Samuel Adams Boston Lager
Way back when, in 1860, the original recipe for the lager was written by Louis Koch and it was brewed in St. Louis, Missouri and originally called The Wooden She Brew. We'll let you decide whether or not you think that sounds tasty.
The brand managed to survive prohibition and and was made up until the 1950s. Then in 1984 - six generations of Kochs later - Jim Koch found the recipe in his parent's attic. Therefore, as a true beer lover, he decided to brew his first batch in his kitchen.
The name Samuel Adams comes from the American Patriot who played an important role in the American revolution including the Boston Tea Party. Jim was hoping to start a revolution of his own... an American beer revolution.
It's not lager as you know it. This lager is something quite special. Deep golden in colour and very full bodied with a great balance of a typical refreshing lager character and the maltiness of a British ale. Bitter sweet and slightly nutty and it tastes even better knowing it is only £1 a bottle.

Wine of the Week - Jim Barry Cover DriveDate published: 20/03/15
Wine of the Week
Jim Barry – Cover Drive
Well I do say, what a spiffing sportsman we have here.
Fancy a spot of cricket?
To explain – the Vineyards for Cover Drive are situated on the site of an old cricket ground, hence the name of the wine. It was quite the Coonawarra sporting hub, and as such Jim Barry have preserved the pavilion and have also left the 22 yard pitch un-planted and grassed over in homage to the history. What gents!
Interestingly, the Coonawarra fruit is blended with a small batch of cool climate Clare Valley Cabernet which lends an elegance to the wine and adds a bit of complexity.
Coonawarra has long been regarded as one of the best sites on earth for Cabernet, and certainly the wines grown on the terra rossa soil are unique.
Sounds strange but this wine has quite a fat nose, with cedar, blackcurrant, herb, menthol and a note of molasses.
Tannin, liquorice and a rustic note of fruit. It's a moreish wine with quite firm structure and great complexity. As well as providing an immediately tasty mouthful this wine would also age beautifully for five years or more.
A perfect partner for a nice chunky steak

Our brand new English Sparkling Wine - Balfour 1503Date published: 14/03/15
Balfour 1503 - English Sparkling Wine
1503 - Such an auspicious year marking the the foundations of Hush Heath Manor.
Being quite the patriot, I Luke, decided to have a closer look at this interestingly fizzy new wine from Kent - Balfour 1503. What we have here is a superb quality English sparkling wine from the Hush Heath Estate in the South East, which sprung up in 2002.
From this Vineyard we have some real bubbly winemakers called Owen Elias and Victoria Ash. These guys have been producing wine at this estate since 2010 and have created 1503 Brut using traditional secondary fermentation in bottle.
Classically English this Sparkling wine is refined in structure with a finely beaded mousse with slight pink highlights. We get crisp apple combined with citrus fruit and a slight hint of pepper and thyme to top it off.
Overall we recommend enjoying this wine immediately... and we mean it. Therefore if you haven't already got yourself a bottle (which you won't have because it is BRAND NEW here at Majestic Bedford) then you best come on down. P.s. It's also great with some light seafood as well, just saying.
Grapes - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier
At a splendid price of £19.98 on our mix and match 33% off promotion, reduced from £29.99.
Oh and guess what... we also have the Rosé 1503 at exactly the same price and on the same promotion! What a lovely pair.
Sparkling Saturday - Prosecco Gioiosa Treviso!Date published: 14/03/15
A brand new addition to our prosecco range, Prosecco La Gioiosa Treviso, is out to try this weekend!
La Gioiosa is one of Italy's leading producers of Prosecco, and takes its name from an ancient local motto 'Marca gioiosa et amorosa', meaning 'Joyous and amorous March', The March of Treviso being an antiquated name for the province in which this wine is made. And seeing as it is currently March, it is the perfect time for you to try!
A fine mousse and pale in colour, it is full of flavours. Fruity, with floral notes and hints of apple and pear.
On offer currently at 33% off, £7.99 a bottle down from £11.99.
Wine of the Week - Finca Carelio TempranilloDate published: 12/03/15
If you missed it last week, we have it out try as our Wine of the Week!
Finca Carelio Tempranillo - Special one-off Parcel
Available to taste!
So tell me about the wine…
It’s made from 100% Tempranillo, which is the grape best known as the dominant grape of red Rioja, Spain's most famous wine.
The grapes were hand harvested from old bush vines in Castilla y Leon, where the hot days and cool nights make for super concentrated red berry flavours and precise acidity. The wine was aged for 30 months in French and American oak giving the smooth texture and spice so typical of the region.
What does it taste like…?
It’s certainly a fruit-driven wine, with plenty of red berry and cassis flavours. There are also savory notes of tobacco and eucalyptus making the wine more comparable to that of a Bordeaux in style; it doesn’t have that vanillary sweetness that Riojas can have.
We think it would be great with a decent cheese board or some charcuterie.
Why should I buy it...?
Well it’s a bit of a bargain to be honest. This wine should have been given Ribera del Duero DO status (which would sell for over £15), but because a mere 10% of the grapes came from outside the designated area, sadly it didn’t meet the strict criteria.
Our Buyers are experts at spotting an opportunity and they swooped in to buy the lot, direct from the producers - it’s a one-off parcel so once it’s gone it’s gone…

Brand new Prosecco now in stock in Bedford!Date published: 11/03/15
We are big fans of prosecco here at Majestic Wines Bedford. It's light, fruity and elegant nature makes it the perfect beverage whether it is a special occasion or just a boozy night in. Not as dry and acidic as Champagne and other sparkling wines, I rarely wake up with a head ache after a prosecco fueled celebration which is another reason it has become increasingly popular... along with the bargain price tag many proseccos come with.
The Prosecco La Gioiosa Etamarosa NV DOC Treviso is brand new to our range at Majestic. It is at a fab price of just £7.99 a bottle (when you mix and match it with another from our 33% off range) and is off-dry and very refreshing; a great party fizz this Easter, Spring and Summer.
La Gioiosa is one of Italy's leading producers of Prosecco, and takes its name from an ancient local motto 'Marca gioiosa et amorosa', meaning 'Joyous and amorous March', The March of Treviso being an antiquated name for the province in which this wine is made. It is a pale straw yellow colour with a fine and persistent mousse. Aromas are lightly floral and fruity, hinting at blossom intermingling with ripe apple. Delicious!

New Addition to our Spanish Range!Date published: 07/03/15
We love trying new wines when they arrive in store here in Bedford, and recently the Finca Carelio Tempranillo 2011 Castilla y Leon has come our way.
Made from Tempranillo, it is lovely, fruity Spanish red similar to Rioja but not quite made in the region. The mature bush vines in the hot, arid climate of Castilla y Leon produce very small bunches of grapes, which have concentrated flavours and fresh acidity due to hot days and cold nights. The wine has mellowed over 30 months' maturation mostly in barrel.
Fully of lush blackcurrent flavours with notes on vanilla, it goes perfectly with your Sunday Roast or a glass or two in the evening.
On offer currently at £6.66 a bottle down from £9.99 on our 33% off range.
Beer of the Week - Oakham Ales – Citra Date published: 05/03/15
Oakham Ales – Citra
Oakham Ales were the first brewery in the UK to use the American Citra hop. This single hop beer was first made as a seasonal special, but proved so popular is has now become one of Oakham's most successful core lines. A light refreshing beer with pungent grapefruit, lychee and gooseberry aromas leading to a dry, bitter finish; this is a very modern version of a classic golden ale. Citra has won many awards since the first brew in 2011, culminating in being awarded the Champion Golden Ale at the CAMRA Great British Beer awards in 2014.
Established in Oakham, Rutland, in 1993, the brewery moved to Peterborough in 1998 where their brewery tap is the largest brewpub in Europe!

Where to store your wine?Date published: 02/03/15
So you've been to visit us at Majestic and left with more than just a couple of bottles... it is easily done! Now you are faced with the challenge of finding somewhere to put them.
Wines worst enemy is extremes and changes in temperature so please don't be tempted to store the wine in your kitchen. The heat in this room is too high and may damage the quality of the wine. The fridge is also too cold so keeping your whites in there for long periods of time may have a negative affect on the taste of the wine. Garages and conservatories can be nice and cool in the winter, however during the summer can get far too hot and these extremes could also damage your wine.
Ideally you should store your wines horizontally in a dark, cool room of constant temperature away from direct sunlight. The reason you should keep your wine lying down is to keep the liquid in touch with the cork. This stops the cork drying out and reduces the likelihood of it cracking and allowing oxygen into the wine. However, if the cork is artificial, or the bottle has a screw cap, you can stand them up. So if your wine rack is over flowing you can demote these bottles to the floor space..!
So, unless you are lucky enough to have your very own wine cellar, the best place in the house to keep your wine is under the stairs. Here it is fairly cool, but most importantly constant and away from direct light. If you don't have stairs, then simply try and find a spot away from a radiator and direct sunlight. A dark, cool corner of the living room will do just fine :-)
Beer of the Week - Alhambra 1925Date published: 27/02/15
Our Beer of the Week this week is the Alhambra 1925, a great new addition to our Craft beer range!
The Alhambra brewery was founded in Granada, Andalusia, in 1925 and is named after the city's magnificent Alhambra Palace. Regarded as the leading craft brewery in Spain, despite the arrival of modern equipment little has changed in the overall brewing process since 1925. All Alhambra beers are made with no additives and the water used is still drawn from the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
The traditional method employed by Alhambra for this beer involves slow, natural fermentation over a period of 35 days. This strong lager has a deep golden colour, and distinctive hop and caramel aromas. The unique bottle is a nod to the bottles used originally in 1925 when the brewery was founded - a Spanish icon, it has no label with all the branding and legal information embossed on the bottle.
"Pours a good fluffy head. Golden amber with lightly toasted aromas. Full-bodied, with a constant, well-rounded and very pleasing taste. Perfect balance of bitter and sweet flavours, with notes ranging from bitter orange to a slightly caramel finish"
On offer at £12.99 single pack or buy any 2 craft beers down to £9.99 a pack

Russian Jack Wines from New Zealand
Who was Russian Jack?
Russian Jack (formally known as Barrett Crumen) was a sailor of either Latvian or Ukrainian origin who jumped ship in Wellington. He spent the next 53 years wandering along the lanes of Wairarapa, working as a swagger. Swaggers cleared the scrub from the land, leaving rich, fertile lands which became the vineyards of Martinborough. There is a statue celebrating Russian Jack’s life in Masterton.
The Russian Jack Pinot Noir
The Russian Jack is a wonderful introduction to Martinborough Pinot Noir. The colour is vibrant and deep with aromas of plum and raspberry and spicy cinnamon characteristics.

Two Wine of the Weeks? What a treat! Date published: 20/02/15
Yes that is right, we have not one, but two Wine of the Weeks this week.
Both great South African wines showing you what this country has to offer, the Bellingham Pinopasso and Rustenberg Sauvignon Blanc are sure to please.
And best of all, we have both of them out to try this weekend so you can see why!
White Wine of the Week - Rustenberg Sauvignon BlancDate published: 20/02/15
Rustenberg Sauvignon Blanc
The Rustenberg winery has a history dating back to 1683. Wine has been bottled in the cellar every year since 1892. The winery has been owned by the Barlow family for over 70 years, which is longer than any other family within the Estate’s history.
An award winning wine!
The current vintage of the wine available at Majestic is the 2014. The 2013 vintage, which was the latest vintage to be assessed, won a Bronze Medal at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) awards. Rustenberg are certain of more success when the 2014 vintage is tasted in May this year.
Why choose the Rustenberg Sauvignon Blanc?
Rustenberg take time and care with their wines. Unlike most Sauvignon Blanc the wine is allowed to rest on its lees (the yeast left over from the fermentation process). This helps to add flavour and body to the wine.
A great wine to drink by itself or with fish or seafood.
£13.49 buy 2 save 33% = £8.99
Red Wine of the Week - Bellingham PinopassoDate published: 20/02/15
The grape variety in Pinopasso is Pinotage, a well known South African grape, but what makes this wine special? It’s been made using a technique known as Ripasso. This is an Italian technique where the wine is passed back over the grape skins from which the juice was extracted, adding more complexity and intensity to the wine.
Why have Bellingham made this wine?
The Bellingham winery has always been innovative and head winemaker Niël Groenewald has maintained that spirit. Having learnt about the process in Italy, Niël felt it would make a fitting tribute to the 13 Italian prisoners of war who helped the owners replant the Bellingham vineyards in the 1940s.
What can you expect from the wine?
The wine is big and full-bodied. It has flavours of cherry and plum and hints of chocolate and spice.
The wine is organic and suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It would go really well with a lasagne.

Iron Maiden Trooper now in stockDate published: 16/02/15
Being a big fan of rock, I am very excited that we now have in stock the Iron Maiden Trooper Ale!
Named after one of their best and most famous songs, the Trooper, which was inspired by ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ which took place at the Battle of Balaclava (1854) during the Crimean War when 600 British cavalry famously and disastrously charged the massed Russian artillery. The beer is brewed by Robinson's brewery, a well known and prestigious family brewer in Cheshire who have been making beer for 6 generations since 1838. The band have had a great say in how the ale tastes and it does taste good!
On our bottled ale offer, it is £24.00 a case of 12 bottles when you buy at least 2 cases of bottled ale.
Still not convinced? Why not come and pick up a case for all your rocking out at home.
Pancake Day!Date published: 15/02/15
With Valentine's over and done with for another year, we move on to the next of the nation's favourite days... Pancake Day!
Whether you preference is savoury or sweet, make it a grown up occasion by matching it with a glass of wine!
The obvious suggestion for a sweet pancake would be to match it with a dessert wine. The honeyed nature of Sauternes would work a treat, as would the fig and cinnamon flavours of Royal Tokaji. As an alternative, pour slightly warmed PX over plain pancakes instead of syrup, we would probably serve it with a glass of the lovely stuff as well!
Off-dry Chardonnay based fizz would complement pancakes very well; Graham Beck, Lindauer Blanc de Blancs and L'Extra par Langlois, or, if you’re feeling really decadent, Pol Roger NV, currently on our 33% off deal!
If, like me, you love a savoury pancake, with baked bacon, onion and cheese pancakes being a personal favourite, why not match it with a light and fruity red? The vibrant strawberry notes of a Beaujolais could work really well here, or how about the First Class Pinot Noir from Chile? Light, smooth and fruity, this would go fabulously well with a savoury pancake.
Let us know if you have any great wine suggestions to partner with pancakes. We would love to hear them.
Wine of the Week - Pierre-Jean Sauvion Chenin Blanc 2013Date published: 13/02/15
Pierre-Jean Sauvion Chenin Blanc 2013
Where’s this wine from …?
The Loire region of France is the homeland of Chenin Blanc, where a variety of styles are produced, from dry to sweet dessert wines.
This is an off-dry Chenin made by the owners of Château du Cléray, one of the major wineries in the western Loire. The cooling breeze from the nearby ocean adds a certain crispness to the wines from here.
So what does it taste like...?
It’s a light style wine with a lovely flavour of sweet apples balanced by a grapefruity acidity.
It’s open on our tasting counter so try it for yourself!
Why should I buy it...?
A lighter style Chenin like this works really well with seafood, but would also make a great aperitif. At only 10.5% alcohol it’s great for lunchtime.

Russian Jack – Kiwi Sauvignon BlancDate published: 08/02/15
Russian Jack – Sauvignon Blanc of New Zealand
So what do we have here? Another amazing New Zealand Sauvignon? Yes please!
And who is this Jack fellow we have here on this wine? Well now, seems this chap (1878 – 1968) was a much loved gentleman of the road' who carried his life on his back in huge sacks. During the fruit harvests this mysterious man was welcomed onto the farms around Martinborough where he picked fruit into his ripe old age. He was honoured by the local population who build a bronze statue to his memory. And that's Jack.
This wine is made by Martinborough Vineyards, who have branched out from their home in New Zealand's North Island, sourcing their Sauvignon grapes from certified sustainable vineyards across the water in Marlborough's Wairau Valley.
This is a wine that should be enjoyed in its youth, ideally with friends and acquaintances or any place where you just want to have fun, relax and enjoy the better things in life. Crisp and refreshing with flavours of lime, lemon-grass, gooseberry and passion-fruit and it goes particularly well with spicy oriental dishes I'll have you know. So come on down and say hey to old man Jack.

Wine of the Week - Natale Verga Pinot GrigioDate published: 05/02/15
Pinot Grigio is very well known grape variety. It is a real crowd pleaser and can be found on the wine list of every bar and restaurant all around the globe. It creates light and aromatic wines which are soft, approachable and very easy to drink which is why it has become so popular. It originated in Burgundy... bet you didn't know that! But it is now grown all over the world, but perhaps nowadays more often associated with Italy.
Pinot Grigio is also known as Pinot Gris. Although there is no difference between the terms, some producers may tend to use the richer and rounder term 'Pinot Gris' to label their grapes which have been left to ripen ever so slightly more to produce a softer wine with more rich, stone fruit flavours.
The Natale Verga Pinot Grigio is brand new to our range and has been selected as the Wine of the Week because not only is it delicious, but at £5.99 (when you buy 2 and save 25%) it offers great value for money.
This is an organic wine from a traditional family producer with 4 generations of experience and emphasis on quality. They pride themselves on being able to create fantastic wines at affordable prices, making them hugely accessible to all customers. The grapes used in this wine come from the province of Pavia in the west of Lombardy, bordering Piedmont and have reached a great level of ripeness making them full of flavour. Unlike the watery house Pinot Grigio you may find down your local, this has lively flavours of green apple, pears and orange blossom, a hint of banana and a smoothness like peaches and cream.
We love it here in Bedford and recommend you serve it by itself or with any seafood and fish dishes.
Beer of the Week - Flying Dog Easy IPADate published: 05/02/15
Here at Majestic we have a fantastic selection of Craft Beers from all over the world. Craft beers are those which are brewed on a relatively small scale by an independent brewer and Majestic are proud to support these smaller breweries by stocking their products.
This week, we are promoting the Flying Dog Easy IPA as our 'Beer of the Week'. This craft beer comes from Aspen, Colorado and has been brewed since 1990. Compared to many other American IPA's, this one is a lot lighter on the alcohol with an ABV of only 4.7%. Most IPA's brewed in the US are 6%+ making them pretty heavy going, but the lightness of the Flying Dog means you can enjoy bottle after bottle after bottle.
The beer itself is light and citrussy, with subtle hints of spice and an underlying hoppiness. It is a great accompaniment to Mexican and Asian food, but as the weather improves it will be a great summer ale.
£12.99 single pack.
Buy 2 or more Craft Beer packs = £9.99 a pack
Domaine de Fabregues 2011 - Ready and waitingDate published: 29/01/15
Domaine de Fabregues 2011, AOP
My journey began in Domaine de Fabregues in the heart of Languedoc, in the foothills of the Cevennes. My producers tell me that an old chapel was transformed into the wine estate way back in 1835, and what an amazing transformation it has been!
Now when it comes to interesting new wines from France, the Languedoc is a fine place to start. There are far fewer regulations than most appellations in France and therefore my producers were able to blend me together using a number of varietals and age me as they saw fit. I am made up of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault which are grown across the region in vineyards ideal for each grape.
If you are a fan of big, hearty meals such as casserole, cottage pie and roast dinner then I am certainly the wine you should be taking home tonight. I am robust, full-bodied and heart warming with a bold and spicy personality. Bursting with blackberry and cherry flavours, I am smooth and will leave you with a warming pepper and dark chocolate flavour in the mouth.
I am open to taste right now and I know you are tempted...
I cost just £8.99 when you buy two bottles on the 25% off promotion.
£11.99 for lonely solo bottle

Luke's wine of the week - La Garnacha SalvajeDate published: 25/01/15
I was very impressed when I decided to give this Spanish wine a shot, as I quite often stick to the confines of Chile and Argentina, but I will definitely be coming back for more of this sweet juice! This wine expresses all the qualities of Garnacha from the area of the Valle del Ebro - so very fresh and fruity, round and youthful, just the way I like my wines. This old world version of Garnacha is very classy but more importantly excellent value at £7.86. Powerful aromas of wild berries and tobacco leaf are tempered by a sense of freshness and floral edges. I also like the way this wine gives a nod towards Burgundy in its style. This is a true example of how Spain can become a powerhouse again now it is reinventing itself. Why not come and try a bottle for yourself?

Spirits of the Week
Broker's London Dry Gin - £19.99Made with the finest herbs, spices and fruit imported from three continents, Broker's Gin is specifically blended to be dry... not unlike the British Sense of humour. This Gin is a brand of personality and playfulness. Producers Martin and Andy Dawson chose chose the image of a bowler-hatted gentleman – an archetypal stockbroker – to reflect the fact that historically England is the home of Gin. Broker's Gin is made in a 200 year old distillery in the heart of England using a traditional copper pot-still. The recipe is as old as the distillery itself. A quadruple-distilled pure grain spirit made from English wheat is redistilled with 10 traditional botanicals creating an exceptionally smooth gin. There are no oddball ingredients in this Gin, only the good old fashioned stuff that should be blended.
“The only time I enjoyed ironing was the day I accidentally got Gin in the steam iron.” - Phyliss Diller
Roger Groult Réserve 3 yr/old - £30.00

This Calvados comes with fresh and fruity notes of Granny Smith apples on the nose with a hint of cream and complimented by nuts and a touch of menthol on the finish resulting in a round and complex taste.

Langton's No.1 Lakeland Gin - £30.00
Langton's No.1 is a celebration of the Lake District and the perfect mix of the 11 specially selected botanicals that make up this Gin certainly reflect this. With water drawn up from the ancient aquifer hidden deep beneath Skiddaw Mountain, it imparts Langton's No.1 with elegance and an unsurpassed smoothness. This Gin has an understated level of Juniper, an uplifting amount of citrus lemon & orange peel and a warming amount of liquorice on the finish. The true balance of this Gin comes from the smoothing effect arising from the Lakeland Oak bark accentuating the special properties of the water of Skiddaw.
The unique bottle design was inspired by a piece of slate found resting on the slopes of Skiddaw Mountain, the heart of Langton's Gin. This tasty Gin is equally at home in cocktails as it is in a glass with a single block of ice.
Wine of the Week - As Caixas Godello 2013 Martín CodaxDate published: 12/01/15

A delicate yet multi-faceted nose of lemon, crunchy pear, melon and subtle floral notes marries with a palate of remarkable texture and a lengthy, citrus zest finish.
Drink with grilled sardines or salt cod.

Beer of the Week - Brooklyn LagerDate published: 20/12/14
In the late 1800’s when Brooklyn was one of the largest brewing centers in the country, lager beer in the “Vienna” style was one of the local favorites. Brooklyn Lager is a direct descendant of the Vienna style, displaying an amber-gold color and a firm malt center supported by refreshing bitterness and a floral hop aroma that give way to smooth caramel malts in the finish. The aromatic qualities of the beer are enhanced by dry hopping, the addition of fresh hops as the beer undergoes its long, cold maturation. The result is a wonderfully flavorful beer: smooth, refreshing and very versatile with food. This wedding of British-inspired dry hopping and Viennese-style lager brewing results in a true American original. Whether it was your first craft beer or about to be your hundredth, you’ll find Brooklyn Lager as robust and inviting as ever.
Only £12.99 single pack price or buy any 2 of our Craft Beers or Ciders and £9.99 a pack.

Saint Clair Pioneer Block Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Marlborough, New Zealand
Saint Clair Family Estate is rapidly becoming one of the most reputed wineries in Marlborough, despite producing their first wines as recently as 1994. The Pioneer Block wines are sourced from outstanding parcels of fruit, identified by chief winemaker Matt Thomson. An almost otherworldly intensity of fruit, with pungent aromas of gooseberry and passionfruit, with a steely dryness, herbaceous characters, underlying minerality and a long, lingering finish. Asian-inspired cuisine is ideal, as the wine echoes the lemongrass and fresh coriander often used in these dishes.
