Grape

Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo

Origin
In Scansano, in the southern part of Tuscany, Morellino is the local name for Sangiovese. In this case blended with 15% Ciliegiolo, another indigenous local grape, this is a slim and youthful style of red, with only a third of the blend spending 6-8 months in new oak.
Taste
Ripe cherry and strawberry fruit forms the backbone of this wine, which is medium-bodied and approachable, and fresh in feel. A subtly rustic streak gives a touch of complexity and food friendliness.
Enjoy
Partner with anything from lamb chops to game, either immediately or within the next 5 years.

    surprising, delicious refreshing red

much more than just a 'standard Italian' - this tastes beautifully of complex, warm-earth-on-a-sunny-day loveliness. Great with good ham.

Light, full of depth and surprises

I bought this expecting a typical chianti. The nose is fresh fruit, the initial taste is delicious sour cherry and hint of plum skins. The robustness referred to is much more - pencil, earth layers, finishing with length but without a bitter tannic aftertaste. Superb.

    just an ordinary chianti

this has to be the biggest let down in the Majestic wine world that I have experienced. It is so very, very ordinary, almost flat tasting, look for something else for your money.

    Outstanding!

Bags of character and typically Italian with cherry and red fruit overtones. Good value, especially compared to more famous Tuscan DOC wines.

    A very delicious light red.

Red cherry fruit flavours, long on the palate and very vibrant. Fresh and light with little bit of spice in there too. Perfect with a nice Lasagne. Great with food but I had the enjoyed the second bottle on its own and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Press Reviews

  • Lively, red meat-loving (2010 Vintage)

"The more I taste Tuscany’s chunky seaside reds, the more I like them, so lap up this lively, red meat-loving 2010, whose herby, bitter cherry fruit is mostly sangiovese with a dash of ciliegiolo (Jane MacQuitty, The Times, 5th May 2012)"

  • It's another graceful, fresh-tasting red (2010 Vintage)

"It's another graceful, fresh-tasting red that would drink well with springtime grills (morellino is the local name for sangiovese in that part of Tuscany) (Fiona Beckett, Guardian, 14th April 2012)."

  • flavours of soft, sweet-and sour red cherries (2010 Vintage)

"There's an evocative waft of wild herbs which, together with the flavours of soft, sweet-and sour red cherries, places this wine unmistakably in Tuscany. It's made in the south of the region from the same grape as Chianti, plus a little of the local Ciliegiolo, and it's just as foodfriendly: I'd have it with pasta and a really meaty ragu. (David Williams, OBSERVER, 29th January 2012)"
