Grape

Malbec

Origin
One of the premier producers of Cahors, the Rigal family have extended their operation to include vineyards throughout the Lot Valley. The region has many alluvial terraces that are free-draining and have great sun exposure, and are perfect for growing Malbec.
Taste
Dense, blackish purple. Aromas of black cherry and bramble fruit, along with hints of anise and prune. The palate is bold and robust, framing juicy fruit with peppery tannins.
Enjoy
Drink over the next 2-3 years, with chargrilled pork ribs.

    Excellent red wine

from Cahors. My doctor prescribed Malbec for me for high blood pressure and so I had the pleasure of testing a number of samples over several weeks. I ended up rejecting the Argentinean versions - although very drinkable just didn't quite have the depth of those from Cahors - and seemed generally to be higher in alcohol. This is just lovely - very drinkable and rich and smooth on the palate. Still try others but tend to come back to this.

  • Hearty, juicy, soft and big (2011 Vintage)

"Burly dark wine that’s like a giant mulberry tap-dancing in peppercorns. Hearty, juicy, soft and big with a warming crackle to keep your spirits ablaze. (Olly Smith, Mail on Sunday, 4th November 2012)"

  • A shade firmer then the average Argentine malbec (2011 Vintage)

"It’s an inky black brew of sweet bramble and blackberry fruit with a trace of liquorice and prunes, and tannins a shade firmer then the average Argentine malbec. (Tom Bruce-Gardyne, The Herald, 6th October 2012)"
