Origin
Saint Clair Family Estate is rapidly becoming one of the most reputed wineries in Marlborough, despite producing their first wines as recently as 1994. The Pioneer Block wines are sourced from outstanding parcels of fruit, identified by chief winemaker Matt Thomson.
Taste
An almost otherworldly intensity of fruit, with pungent aromas of gooseberry and passionfruit, with a steely dryness, herbaceous characters, underlying minerality and a long, lingering finish.
Enjoy
Asian-inspired cuisine is ideal, as the wine echoes the lemongrass and fresh coriander often used in these dishes.

excellent, but what's happened to the price?

Excellent wine, and a great vineyard to visit, but come on Majestic. This was a £12-13 wine two years ago & now £17.50? £12 is about what it is worth. Any more and there's much better value about - on this site and elsewhere...

    Exceptional

All the blocks have different characteristics but all are exceptional. Even better when drunk with Antipasto Platter at the vineyard!

Good Sauvignon - watch the price though

The first time I tasted this wine a few years ago I thought straightaway it was a cut above the plethora of Sauv blancs that are marketed around the £8-£15 range. Crisp, dry and with wonderful flavours. Am inclined to agree with others though that its a bargain around the £12 region and any higher pricing has me reaching for other makers. eg Greywacke made by Kevin Judd who used to be the chief winemaker responsible for Cloudy Bay.

    Fantastic wine and excellent value

We went to St. Clair a few times when we lived in New Zealand and taste tested the Pioneer Block range, and the Sauvignon Blanc, along with their Chardonnay, was just amazing and brought several bottles of each. Now being back in the UK it has been brilliant to be able to by these again. The Pioneer Block Sauvignon Blanc contains all you would expect from a Marlborough Region wine - but it is like tasting the very best grapefruit and passionfruit combined to give this a luxurious, mouth-watering taste. Will be buying more in the future, and my advice is to look out for the Pioneer Block Chardonnay as well because it is sensational.

  • This gorgeous, rich, floral, white currant-stashed 2011 (2011 Vintage)

"This gorgeous, rich, floral, white currant-stashed 2011 is every bit as good as a grand sancerre. (Jane MacQuitty, The Times, 22nd September 2012)"

  • This exceptional white positively sings

"A wine that was made for the first flush of spring, this exceptional white positively sings with the pure passion fruit that I associate with many Kiwi sauvignon blancs, but it has much more to it than that. There's a tingling, mineral edge and an extra level of precision and complexity that both lifts it out of the ordinary and makes it compulsively drinkable. (David Willliams, Observer, 25th March 2012)"

  • "Crisp and herby on the nose – attractively bright and layered. To sip, this wine is delightfully crisp with very long lasting flavour and superb citrus refreshment. A real sense of vibrance and purity. Score: 91/100 (This review is specifically about the Block 19 Bird Block Sauvignon)"
