Grape

Carignan

Origin
An indigenous grape variety of the Languedoc, Carignan produces dark ruby red wines with plenty of body, and are said to be a great expression of the rugged heathland terroir around Carcassonne. This example is from low-yielding vines aged around 40 years.
Taste
Deep and inky red in colour, the wine is crammed with black cherry fruit, lifted by subtle vanilla aromas from a touch of oak ageing. Bold, meaty tannins provide satisfying texture and length.
Enjoy
Drink with traditional and hearty southern French cuisine like cassoulet and duck confit.

    good stuff

Carignan can be pretty tough and unforgiving - but this is smooth, rich and fruity. The 'vielles vignes' probably has something to do with that. It has some lovely herbal undertones that make it a very satisfying mouthful. At the offer price it is a steal. If I could give half-stars it would be four and a half.

    Carignan Magic

Not found too often this grape from old vines is always worth searching out and this is an outstandingly good example. Not five stars only because i live in hope of even better of this variety on some mythical planet. Divinely different

    Good honest wine

Good to drink. Smooth and good value for money. We ordered another case and will keep a look-out for other Grignon wines.

  • Full of juicy, black cherries (2011 Vintage)

"There is a touch of oak-ageing (barrels not chips), but what comes bursting through is the lovely herbal, sweet and sour flavours of the grape. Carignan is a workhouse variety in this part of southern France and can taste dried-out like bracken. This one seems full of juicy, black cherries. (Tom Bruce-Gardyne, The Herald, 25th August 2012)"

  • I was really very impressed (2011 Vintage)

"I was really very impressed. The nose is very slightly baked à la Barrua, but in this case it is backed up by sweet, charming fruit with a hint of strawberries and lots of fluidity on the palate. I don't think it is worth ageing, but its warmth is clearly due to the excellent, even 2011 growing season rather than to sheer alcohol. (Jancis Robinson, www.jancisrobinson.com, 31st August 2012)"

  • "Sweetly perfumed aromas with a palate of vibrant light fruit that would suit meaty fish or a even a platter of charcuterie. When it's down to £4.99 on offer, this is a cracking deal for a value wine with character. Score: 88/100 "

  • "Bargain of the week, this old vine carignan is a brooding, dark red with all the panache and style of the great reds of the South of France."

  • "Not only does this old vine carignan from southern France's Vin de Pays de l'Hérault look good, but its vivid fruitiness is succulently, cherryishly gluggy and appetising."
