Grape

Tempranillo, Grenache

Origin
From a bodega founded in 1885 in the high-altitude Rioja Alta region, where the ripening season is long and warm. This Gran Reserva spends 2 years in oak casks, followed by 3 years maturing in bottle prior to release.
Taste
A fine and elegant bouquet, full of trademark aged Rioja aromas: raisins, dried figs, cinnamon and vanilla. Velvety on the palate, with time-mellowed tannins, and a long, smooth finish.
Enjoy
Lovely with roasts or game, or try with the winery's own recommendation of baked cod.

    Unusually fine-boned

This had a delicacy born of age, I guess, and being a Gran Reserva and all - but it came on quietly forceful as well. In some ways reminiscent of a PInot N: fine-grained texture and the cherry-plum notes that others have mentioned. Don't buy it. Leave it all for me.

    Magnificent Rioja

Rich, complex and pure velvet. Must decant or aerate to give it its full potential.

    Declining

I was surprised that this wine looked and tasted as old as it did. OK it's 8 years old, but Rioja should not be as vegetal or fading as this was. It was also surprisingly light and acidic. However, it did have some complexity - leafy, sour cherry flavours.

    Elegant Rioja

We tasted this with and withiut food against the 2003 Vina Eguia and 2004 Bodegas Muriel Grand Reservas. The Lagunilla won due to its elegance and more complex flavours. This is not a rich and hefty wine but one with more sublty and finess. A good buy at £12 a bottle - I bought 18!

    Great Rioja

An excellent buy, have bought more since trying the first bottle. Really well-balanced, very flavoursome, but not overpowering. A pleasure to drink with roasts.
